Out Of The Park (OOTP) Baseball: anyone else playing this?

Got this about a year ago and have been pretty much addicted to it since. Right now I'm letting games sim on their own and am sticking to mainly GM duties and setting the line-ups/rotation/strategy. My current league has made it to 2045 and I've made it to the playoffs 19 consecutive years now. I'm just playing out the next few years because I want to see some of my draft picks make it into the hall of fame and then i'll start a new one on a harder difficulty. Also, Giancarlo Stanton is my bench coach and he's evolved into a pretty big sabermetrics guy!

Anyways – if any other ilxors are into this, i'd love to talk shop!

i used to play baseball mogul a ton, tried OOTP maybe 5 years ago and it was definitely a better piece of software (mogul is super slow/clunky and pretty transparently a one-person project) but the interface density and amount of stuff going on in it was almost overwhelming. might give it another shot since i'm sure they've improved it since i last tried it.

there's def a lot going on – they really went all the way in making it as realistic as possible, with the depth of the minor leagues and things like rule 5 and coach personalities etc; but i found it pretty easy to get the hang of at the same time. you just need to know baseball fairly well.
obv i'm going to recommend you get it asap!

I play iootp on ios but its not that great.. some of the player progression is mystifying and its basically impossible to build a team through the draft since theres usually about 1-2 good players period and the rest are all relievers and 1/2 star prospects.

carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 25 October 2016 17:08 (eight years ago)

huh. on the desktop platform i've had some decent luck with the draft (tho my preference is to focus on international talent). once a team gets good tho, it's tough because the 70-80 rated talent is def concentrated in the top 10 picks – but i've still gotten some decent talent in the earlier rounds. the guy i mentioned going into the hall was a 20th round pick!
the key is to have a scout that's really good (excellent/legendary) with amateur talent.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 25 October 2016 17:32 (eight years ago)

yeah iootp is way stripped down - no scouts or anything like that. its still fun to sim for a couple years to see what happens but once the players name shift into purely AI generated names I lose interest

This sounds cool, I've never played sim games but it seems like something I'd really like. I'll have to check this out during the offseason.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 25 October 2016 21:38 (eight years ago)

do it dude. you won't miss the rest of your life.

one month passes...

played 2 seasons now, blew a 3-1 game WS lead with 3 outs from victory in season1, just won it all in season 2, but I am a trade happy and not concentrating on the farm so I am anticipating a steep drop off for upcoming year

You're missing out! The Most rewarding thing in the game for me is having one of my draft picks/international amateurs come through the system and light the big leagues on fire. Right now one of my best guys was a low A throw-in I got in a p huge trade. My scouts really liked the guy, looked big league ready, but he'd been languishing in the low minors for no apparent reason. Two years later he was an all-star, ROY and basically replaced Mike trout in RF (Trout was 38 at this point).

eight years pass...

i'm starting to plan out my off-season, winter OOTP sim project.
gonna create a league made up of each franchise's best ever team. started going over team histories and there are a few obvious choices, but most teams have a couple seasons where it's hard to choose between. will post what i come up with in a bit.

Anyone play Broken Bat?

timellison, Sunday, 20 July 2025 17:19 (one month ago)

A friend of mine was talking about that, but don’t know much about it

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 20 July 2025 17:41 (one month ago)

It's pretty fun! Fictional players, but they're well put together. You manage a whole franchise.

timellison, Sunday, 20 July 2025 22:22 (one month ago)

I've had my team since the pandemic and it's played through about 25 seasons!

timellison, Sunday, 20 July 2025 22:53 (one month ago)

wow! how long does a season take, in terms of hours?

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 20 July 2025 23:06 (one month ago)

The season takes place over about 2 1/2 months. There are spring training games, league games, tournament games, and the playoffs. During the regular season, your team plays a series every day, so three or four games against one opponent, unless it's a tournament day.

timellison, Sunday, 20 July 2025 23:56 (one month ago)

oh this is all vs real people?

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 July 2025 01:15 (one month ago)

Yeah, although there are 756 teams and some of them are considered “bot teams.” A team reverts to bot control if a player doesn’t log on for a long time. The whole thing is a pyramid structure with 32 12-team leagues at the lowest level, 16 at the next level, then 8 leagues, 4 leagues, 2 leagues, and one league (called Legends League) at the very top.

timellison, Monday, 21 July 2025 04:04 (one month ago)

You promote by winning a division or relegate by finishing fifth or sixth.

timellison, Monday, 21 July 2025 04:07 (one month ago)

tim i'm heading to anaheim next week 👀

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Monday, 21 July 2025 07:35 (one month ago)

Ya, you might have talked me into this game.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 July 2025 18:38 (one month ago)

Oh awesome! Let me know if you get a team.

timellison, Monday, 21 July 2025 20:04 (one month ago)

Steve, getting in a trip to the Big A?

timellison, Monday, 21 July 2025 20:07 (one month ago)

yes, still trying to figure out details though...

will let you know the scoop once i'm in the loop 😅

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Monday, 21 July 2025 20:11 (one month ago)

Ok, i think i have the teams almost sorted...

Yankess: 1927.
Red Sox: 1912 was more dominant, but pre-deadball era is weird and maybe i should go with 2018
Orioles: 1970.
Blue Jays: 1992.
Rays: 2021 i guess.

Tigers: 1935. case could be made for 1968 or 1984.
White Sox: 1917 looks to be the obvious choice, except for the difficulty in going back that far... so maybe 1983 or 2005?
Guardians: can't decide between 1954 and 1948.
Twins: 1965, but 1933 is a close runner-up.
Royals: leaning 1977, but 2015 or 1980 could also work.

Athletics: 1931, but 1910 and 1988 were also very good.
Angels: leaning 2002 over 2008.
Mariners: 2001.
Rangers: 2011.
Astros: probably 2019, tho 2022 and 2018 could also work.

Braves: 1998.
Phillies: 1976 or 2011. no clue which. plz help.
Mets: 1986.
Nationals: another tough choice between 2012, 1994 or 2016.
Marlins: 1997.

Cubs: could go with 2016, 1907 or 1935. again can't decide.
Cardinals: 1942.
Pirates: 1971.
Reds: 1975.
Brewers: 1982.

Dodgers: 2020.
Giants: 1954. 1905, 1912 and 2021 did better, but the '54 team feels more legendary.
Padres: 1998.
D-Backs: probably 2001 over 1999.
Rockies: 2007.

1942 not often brought up in terms of greatest cardinals seasons!

z_tbd, Wednesday, 23 July 2025 00:23 (one month ago)

the big red machine of the 40s. three season with over 100 wins. 4 WS appearances with three titles. with guys like Stan Musial, Enos Slaughter, Mort Cooper (MVP in 1942), Marty Marion ('44 MVP)
