The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Detroit Tigers Minor League right-handed pitcher Paul Voelker has received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Amphetamine, a stimulant in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Since the "steroid era" was supposedly all about home runs (i.e. the only evidence that the game was "unfair" was all the home runs), I'm wondering what people are going to say when the all-time HR record is broken this week.

that the ball is juiced

and the drugs are better

Not an argument I want to wade into, but would the league record for HR have something to do with ever-deepening lineups, more guys at every position who hit HR? Extreme example: the Astros, with a whole bunch of guys hitting between 10-20. On an individual basis, though, there aren't really any freakish seasons this year like the Brady Anderson-Luis Gonzalez-Bret Boone era. One guy's going to hit around 60, and I don't think that's a surprise to anyone. A couple of rookies are going to break records. Other than that, it seems like a relatively normal year looking at individual players.

Posnanski has the same theory:

haven't read the joe piece but to answer your question in the post above clem -- yes, fangraphs has had several pieces presenting the evidence for that. the increase in homers has largely come from mediocre players suddenly having power
