with ~95 games to play, the entire american league is within 5 games of a playoff spot.
the national league playoff picture, however, seems essentially set apart from central champion. even if the rockies/dbacks go .500 the rest of the way, they still win 89 games.
let's get dealing. zack cozart's value will never be higher!

Ditto Justin Smoak if the Jays decide they can't win everything this year. They've got these two player-sons (Guerrero and Bichette) on the horizon, so I'd count a Smoak trade as simply biding your time for a year or two, and far from dismantling the team.

I was trying to look to see who might be interested in Cozart and I could only come across the Rockies as a team that might want a loaner upgrade at shortstop. Most of the contenders are pretty well setup at short unless there is an injury.

I'd imagine Turner breaking his wrist might make the Nats be looking to deal for a loaner at shortstop. Reds could probably throw in a bullpen arm like Tony Cingrani in such a deal with Cozart if they get talking trade.

Rumors about the Nats being interested in Raisel Iglesias came up last week. He is signed up for quite a few years, so he would be a nice player for quite a few teams to get. While Iglesias is already a 'great' closer, he is definitely a player that I would consider flipping back and trying as a starter. Reds were worried about his two shoulder injuries which is why they have moved him to the bullpen and probably will leave him as a closer going forward. That said, this guy has three really good pitches - I'd figure he could be a pretty darn good starter. Considering the contract and talent upside, I would figure you would have to put up some real talent to get him.

Loads of Tigers fans never forgave Alex Avila for being unable to repeat 2011, when he slugged over .500 despite Leyland playing him into the ground (over 130 games, plus two playoff series, caught). Always seemed solid as a defender, could at least take a walk when his hitting predictably regressed -- enough to keep his OBP regularly above average. Played through several concussions, had a glowing rep from pitchers, broadcasters, and beat writers. Somehow only nepotism could explain his roster spot. Then he went to the White Sox -- hooray! Tigers catchers, including Inge-in-making James McCann, that year: .205/.277/.345. Then only nepotism could explain the subsequent re-signing of Avila...who went on to have the team's third-highest OPS. Now the GM is viewed by some as a wacko for selling off a member of his own family for scraps. No-win situation.
