THE Average Sports Fan: What is your take on Kapler?
Jeff Sullivan: From the beginning, it was understood that some people would love him and some people would hate him. Anyone who’s that polarizing will get buried at any and every opportunity
The challenge is and has always been maintaining the confidence in the clubhouse. Kapler doesn’t have to give a shit what anyone is writing. None of it matters. He just needs to make sure he has buy-in from the Phillies themselves. He’s going to make some unusual decisions. How many of them work out, we won’t know for months. I’m glad he’s getting this opportunity
There’s a real chance Kapler could be a failure. Just might not be cut out to be a leader. We don’t know that yet, and we can’t learn anything, really, from a shift that doesn’t work

he briefly managed in the minors 10 years ago (before attempting a comeback!) and from what i understand the players *loved* him. obviously dealing with appy league kids is different and maybe kapler’s weirder now, but i kinda feel like if anyone can do this, he (or dave roberts) is the guy. also my philly relatives think the local media has it in for him, which helps bring out philly fans’ natural inclination to boo
but tbh maybe using your pitching staff like it’s the world series is just something that can’t be done over a six-month season

are the phillies really paying jake arrieta $25m a year to be pinch hit for, with no one on base, in the fourth inning
idk gabe
― mookieproof, Sunday, 8 April 2018 20:47 (seven years ago)
i think they might have been limiting his innings, since he got a late start?
― Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 9 April 2018 15:02 (seven years ago)
that is possible and would make sense, but apparently he went out on deck and had a helmet on before being pinch hit for
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/phillies-temporarily-demote-zach-eflin-despite-having-a-career-year-costing-him-20000/
The Phillies optioned starter Zach Eflin following his start on Friday night and activated infielder J.P. Crawford from the disabled list. The way the Phillies schedule is structured, Eflin won't miss a start. Instead, he'll be recalled to take part in a doubleheader as the 26th man before returning to the minors to complete the mandatory 10-day assignment. In the interim, the Phillies will benefit from having a five-man bench from which to pull from during late-and-close spots.Nonetheless, the move isn't zero-sum for Eflin: He'll lose out on nine days of service time and $20,000. Here's what his agent, Tom O'Connell, told The Athletic's Matt Gelb about the move:"While this transaction on the surface seems purely administrative, it caught us by surprise and is tremendously disappointing. Major-league starters have a strict routine that they adhere to that allows them to be successful; this roster move affects that. While the club may feel that they are doing what's best for the organization, they also lose sight of the human element and how it will affect the player."

Was down to see the Phillies yesterday. Hope they make the playoffs--good young lineup, six or seven guys around 25. I notice they've been outscored by a run this year, so they've obviously been a little lucky.

After a series of troubling revelations about Kapler’s handling of assault allegations during his time in L.A., it’s time for the Phillies to separate from their manager, and for the Dodgers to take responsibility

Since the Phillies don’t play the Mets 162 times per season, Maikel Franco’s performance landed him back in Triple-A.

Mike Schmidt's 75th birthday today. One of the key players in the early days of sabermetrics--hard to believe now, but that's what it took to show that a guy who hit .270 and would strike out 130-140 times could be the best player in baseball. In '80 and '81, he made it pretty obvious.
