not an expert but i think ippei thinks he comes off as a bit more sympathetic and hence deserving of a lesser sentence if he can say he is the victim of his own degenerate gambling addiction. the feds are saying that ippei's gambling addiction wasn't what motivated him, ippei is just a malicious person who stole from his best friend *without* the added motivation to pay back the debt, so throw the book at him.

based solely on what was in the article and without looking at the legal documents that most likely have a timeline of the thefts, the feds argument seems a little, as we lawyers like to say, too cute by half. at the time ippei first stole, he was already in gambling debt, but the feds are saying since he had $34k in his checking account he could have simply paid off the debt without stealing from ohtani. this sort of elides over the fact that ippei already had *some* amount of gambling debt at the time he first stole.

idk it feels like to me if i had a gambling debt (even if modest!) that i could make go away by dipping into my hidden best friend slush fund i'd want to do that thing instead of using my own money. if i were ippei. actually if i were ippei i would never do any of this because my best friend is shohei freakin ohtani are you kidding me? what a bozo
