So, how did YOUR team do today?

My White Sox have to get the award for "most humiliating opening day loss." Leading 7-2 during the game, and 7-3 going into the 9th, and losing 9-7 in just 9 innings...yes, that's what you call a complete bullpen meltdown, with contributions from Cliff Politte, Billy Koch and, most surprisingly, 2003 stud lefty Damaso Marte, who gave up 5 runs on 2 homers to help KC steal one.

That said, I'm impressed with the offensive output displayed, with the hits spread out among most of the starting hitters, and Paul Konerko starting off with a .750 average after being AWOL the first half of last year.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i drafted marte banking on a total suck-fest on the part of polite and koch. i hope this isn't a sign he'll be joining them.

i think, perhaps, the jays defeat was just as bad. 7-0 loss to de-fucking-troit - shame¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

My Brewers hung on to weather a couple of Cardinal comebacks and ultimately triumph, even though Sheets got chased after 88 pitches, half of them balls. Scott Podsednik (whom I dumped in my other league because I'm long on OFs there) with four RBIs and a really nice catch of a shallow fly in a run-scoring situation; Junior Spivey lively with the bat; Geoff Jenkins unselfishly hammering a sac fly....

Is there any greater feeling than listening to your team on the radio? Especially when Bob Uecker gets a little tips' like J-Kwon and starts free-associating?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Indians blow a 4-0 eighth inning lead to lose 7-4 in 11. In typical form, Wedge takes out CC after pitching 7 scoreless innings. The tribes bullpen could be the worst ever (Jose Jiminez, Chad Durbin, Scott Stewart ??????????? who are these people?????). Good grief, let CC pitch 8 and put in your closer.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

My team won yesterday by not playing. I am hoping that Curt Schilling against Baltimore's #2 (wow, pitching against the team that acquired you from the Red Sox back in '88! that's like kismet!) produces a more desired result for BoSox fans than that 86 MPH snoozefest on Sunday night.

Note to NESN & WSBK - MORE SEAN MCDONOUGH PLEASE!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Cubs 7 Reds 4.

I don't understanding batting Patterson 2nd, but hey if it works that is good with me.

The Reds are going to suck this year. They should hit pretty good, especially if Jr. can stay healthy, but their pitching staff looks like something out of the American Association.

earlnash, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's hitting leadoff for zee Cubbais? Grudz? If that's the case, I imagine they'll flip-flop Patterson between lead-off & 2nd, depending on whether Grudz or Walker is starting.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Grudzelenek (sp?) led off. I would think you would want Patterson to bat first, just so he might get that extra at bat.

Grudz/Walker should be a pretty decent platoon tandum, if they can both deal with neither having the job outright.

earlnash, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Otto, there's no malapropisms (or, in this case, outright language butchery) in baseball. How dare you suggest otherwise.

I THINK Patterson is not the regular leadoff hitter because of his lack of plate discipline / low OBP. But I can't think of anyone else I'd rather have in that Cub line-up lead off, and I'm not sold on Grudz doing it. Regardless, I thought Dusty would be gung-ho to have a speedster setting the table.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought i'd read that dusty was going to be easing patterson into the lineup early in the year. he didn't want to pop his knees playing in 38 degree games.

the giants are getting hits from highly unusual sources (a bases clearing double by the neifarious one). i've been saying this for a while, they are a darkhorse. if the darkhorse trend continues (arizona, anaheim, florida), look for them to squeeze out some small ball victories in october.

the brewers don't deserve to win, honestly. it'll just be more money to line the owners' (=selig's) pocket, and might just encourage the trend. a really corrupt franchise over there in milwaukee.

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 8 April 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Explain the idea that Milwaukee is a more corrupt franchise than any other team in-- no, actually, don't. I'm sure you're right, John. The Brewers are what's wrong with baseball, absolutely. But I'll root for them anyway, because I am a huge fan of corruption and big business, and I'm hoping that they can singlehandedly ruin the entire game of baseball.

Seriously, I don't think they have a chance. But what the hell, dude, don't blame the players for whatever sins you want to attribute to the management. You're anti-Podsednik? Anti-Spivey? You would actually hate on Chad Moeller?

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost to milo:

Miller Park was a bond-fueled election-approved issue in Milwaukee County, and it would have failed except for a lawmaker who rather mysteriously changed his vote at the last second. The voters were all pissed off and recalled him, but it was too late. 'Round here, though, it was seen less as "Selig bribed him" than "suburban Republicans pressured him and he caved."

Anyway, Miller Park (I was saying all this to teeny on AIM earlier!) is an architectural wonder more than it is A Great Ballpark. And people love it. And it's not like County Stadium was all that to begin with...that place was a (semi-lovable) DUMP. MP is awesome.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(that was supposed to mean that the architecture of MP is kick-ass but that it's not really as cozy and friendly as a park needs to be. it's Shea instead of Yankee Stadium. but the food is awesome and there are microbrews.)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

And it has the slide, too, right?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 9 April 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Jason Schmidt gives up 7 runs, says he doesn't feel "like himself". Giants get 4 hits in the game. They're continuing to ground into a major league leading 24 double plays, effectively killing rally after rally. This team looks like they have some potential, but too many guys are cold and the pitching staff is already run down here in the 2nd week. Robb Nen anyone? Oh and final score 11-0.

Jake Peavy walked Bonds on 4 pitches, nothing even close to the strike zone, but get this: with an 8 run lead... not once, but TWICE. While that's great and gives him his shut out, I hope someone lays down a bunt single if Peavy ever gets good enough to take a no-hitter into the ninth inning.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax!, you're drinking hatorade on Peavy. You're conveniently forgetting the strikeout in BB's first at-bat, which was mostly caused by Bonds being pissed off that an umpire would deign to call a strike on a close pitch; Peavy came right at him three straight pitches and he didn't swing at any of 'em.

And did he walk Pedro Feliz on purpose too right after Bonds the first time, throwing the same pitches in the same spots, just to piss you and Barry off too? I think the second walk was probably intentional-ish, but the first one is unfairly characterized as "nothing even close to the strike zone," the ball was breaking wrong outside for him that whole inning. And it was only with a seven-run lead. So there, nyah nyah.

(Watch, now g! will pull some compelling stats out of his arsenal to ruin my argument.)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(heh - arse|nal)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

well considering Bonds and Feliz had both homered pretty much back to back the night before (and the fact that noone else on the giants look like they could hit the ball), it did seem a little suspicious... but B2D, you are absolutely right and Peavy was deeply apologetic after the game. It just ired not just me but a lot of the giants fans who at that point was probably the only reason to feel like they witnessed something special that night.

wrt: the strikeout
the second and third strikes on the first at bat (and granted i didn't have the proper vantage point) looked low (below the knee) which I'm okay with. If an umpire calls a low strikezone... so be it, just so long as it's called all night to both teams. i don't think Peavy (nor Schmidt) got those pitches called the rest of the game.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, they weren't exactly beachballs over the middle, but NO ONE WOULD THROW THAT SHIT to Bonds, not now, not ever. What irked me was the contemptuous expression on Bonds' face after the second one: "No one must call a ball on a close pitch to Barry Bonds! I will now fail to swing at a much closer pitch just to prove a point! Take that, umpire!" Come on, dude, just deal.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I was wrong about the last pitch, it was waist high but on the black and could have gone either way according to a friend who had a much better view.

Yeah, I can deal without the batter's box drama too. He was probably pretty upset at himself. It's not like he can't take a low and outside pitch out of the strikezone pretty deep (659 against Roy Oswalt). It still doesn't excuse the desire to throw pure garbage with a 7- or 8-run lead though. Peavy was getting it rough from the hecklers.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw (what i believe to be) the 2nd strikeout and barry gave the ump a sour look said something to him then clearly said "jesus CHRIST" as he walked back to the plate.

strike two looked like a blown call by the ump but strike three was on the black and was definitely going to be called a strike if the ump called the other one a strike.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

well, giving up 7 runs in the top of 9th isn't the best way to stage a comeback victory for SF (their neighbors the As gave up 6 in the bottom of the 8th). they look really bad. AJ Pierzynski grounded into his league-leading 7th double play (other Giants in the top 20: Ray Durham, Edgardo Alfonzo, Neifi Perez). As a team they lead the majors with 31 GiDPs (Cleveland has 26).

Batting: The Giants are 26th in OBP (.328) and 26th in Runs Scored.
Pitching: The Giants are 29th in ERA (5.44), 30th in WHIP and 28th in Ks.

Things can only get better right? Didn't the Angels start out 3-11 in 2002?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

When Bill Hall stepped up to the plate last night I somehow WILLED him to hit that home run. The Reds have no one to blame but themselves, five errors wow, but I'm thinking that these Brewers players are just lovable hard-working dudes and I am heavily in favor of them.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Tough to say. Cobby Box seemed to think it was, but that's no surprise. This came at the end of that huge 9th inning for the Braves which put the game way out of reach, and also Giles was 3-5 with three doubles and was at the plate going for "the record" (4 doubles in a game; something that a jillion people have done - including Giles himself, I guess - but there you go.)

And with Dotel heading toward free agency at the end of this season, Lidge may get a chance at closing next year.

But don't look at this season's numbers to make that judgement. As is his habit, it took Dotel a good three weeks to reach his full velocity, which led to some ERA-inflating innings early on.

Lidge has just been filthy nasty since day 1, though.

Cincinnatti's bullpen last week went a long way towards becoming the worse in the state of Ohio this weekend, which is saying something. I think they blew four leads last week, which is two worse than Kyle Farsworth.

earlnash, Monday, 3 May 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but that's an entire bullpen compared to the efforts of one lone Cubbie. That's an economical use of suck over there in Chicago - Cincy needs to get some QA folks in the pen to shore up that waste.

BTW, Texas = thee suck. Boo hiss boo hiss.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 3 May 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah! Last night it was the Astros bullpen's turn to blow up. Astros rally to take a 5-4 lead in the 6th, then Lidge gives up a 2-run bomb to Javier Valentin in the 8th and Dotel allowed a solo shot to D'Angelo Jimenez. What the hell, on a team with Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr., we get beat by Javier Valentin? Oh well, there won't be many games this year that both Lidge and Dotel get taken deep. I guess it's still better than walking everybody in the 9th inning to lose.

FYI, Griffey left in the 3rd inning with hamstring problems. I hope it's nothing too serious.

Catching up on last weekend, the NL Central has given the NL West a hard time of late.

The Cubs and Reds have both tagged the Dodgers hard in last week, LA only winning one out of six games. The Cubs swept the Padres last weekend. The Pirates swept the Giants last weekend. (Sorry Gygax.)

All of the NL Central is still over .500 except the Pirates, which are one game under.

For as sorry a start as the Phillies have seemed to have, they are still 19-17 and 1 1/2 out of first. (Jimmy Rollins is about up to the Mendoza line at around .212)

Oakland seems to be heating up.

Both the Twins and Angels are winning while having many key players on the DL. Can they stay there?

earlnash, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

How's this for NL West doldrums? Last weekend, Colorado was the only team to avoid being swept by squeaking out a late inning win over Philadelphia on Sunday*. Here's the kicker: all of the NL West teams were hosting the games.

*Colorado beat Philly again on Monday.

The Pirates were 1-9 and had the 2nd worst record in baseball before sweeping the Giants at home. The Giants even made Josh Fogg (0-4 and 8.68 ERA prior to the SF trip) look like Sandy Koufax.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Suprising teams:

Cincinnatti 26-18, first NL Central:
They are coming off a four game sweep of Houston and have been very hot the past couple of weeks. Their pitching has been better than expected and Danny Graves seems to have regained his form back in the closer spot. Will it hold out? I doubt it, the Reds have gotten off to decent starts the past few years and the pitching completely collapses like Junior's legs in the second half. Paul Wilson is probably the new Elmer Dessens. Sean Casey has been a freak so far this year, his contract must be up.

White Sox 25-18, tied for first AL Central:
They are quietly putting together a pretty good season and would be up a few more if not for some blown chances by their bullpen early in the season. The Big Hurt is off to a good start and Paul Konerko seems to have regained his bat. They are hitting .280 as a team. I haven't seen them play, but going by the stats, they seem to be a decent all around team and could win their division.

For as bad as things have been this year in Atlanta, they are still only a game below .500 and only 3 1/2 out of first place in the NL East.

I saw this posted elsewhere:

Reds, 26-18, 211 runs scored, 211 runs allowed (0)
Cubs, 25-18, 210 RS, 163 RA (+47)
Astros, 24-20, 238 RS, 186 RA (+52)
Cards, 23-21, 214 RS, 197 RA (+17)
Brewers, 22-20, 207 RS, 209 RA (-2)
Pirates, 19-21, 182 RS, 185 RA (-3)

I think we know how this Cinderella story ends.

Yes, thou shalt regress toward run differential expectation! Unless Griffey and Kearns stay healthy, and hit along with Dunn?

Since I'm going to Cincy for the SABR convention in mid-July, I'm hoping the Reds hang in til then.

I have to say, it was pretty cool to see fans in that stadium cheering in the 8th. Nearly 30,000 of them, too! I only recall that place being very, very quiet on TV.

As far as run differential, the Reds were -10 a few days back, so maybe they're making progress.

Griffey's producing just fine (tho his average isn't very sexy), and I don't doubt that Kearns will do well, too. Sean Casey's gotta realize he sucks sooner or later, tho, and they need good table setters so the 3 amigos don't go stag every time they do yardwork. (D'Angelo, WTF?)

Where the hell is Claussen, BTW?!?!?!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean Casey is realizing he is going to have to produce if he wants to get dumped off to a playoff contender down the stretch.

earlnash, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

is this Casey's free agent year?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

claussen is in AAA, getting lots of strikeouts but having trouble with walks and home runs.
