He's walking a good amount and not striking out much. He rates pretty well in exit velocity and barrels. I think he'll figure it out but it's definitely been rough.

I also feel there is something about coming to the NY market that is a shift. But yeah, he hasn't hit well so far. His defense has been good though.

God, just saw Pillar in the dugout tonight and cringed. Looks brutal and glad he seems ok (aside from nasal fractures).

So many injuries and yet a lot of unexpected people coming through lately. This has been a very fun month so far.

i love lindor and even tho he's a met i still have a hard time rooting for him to fail, but his slash numbers have been pretty concerning for a bit now even dating back to last season. his SLG percentage has fallen off a cliff and if he's not providing elite power at that position he's kinda just... a high AVG/low OBP shortstop getting into his 30s... it feels pretty dicey to me longterm. they really need him to be an MVP level player for the next 4-5 years because the back half of that contract is gonna be ugly given the type of player he is

deGrom is going to do what Kluber and Donaldson looked like they might do (but almost certainly won't now): get into the HOF on an astounding peak value after the age of 27.

He still needs to play 3 more years to be eligible, and may need a Cy young / no hitter / post season heroics along the way to really seal the deal. But he is definitely on the path.

i was pretty surprised none of the young infield mets were moved. with cedric mullins joining that probably means less time for mcneil at CF. so now have 5 players (mauricio, baty, acuna, vientos, and mcneil) for two infield spots (2B + 3B) and DH, which marte also occupies. vientos/marte platoon doesn't make sense cause they're both righties. i don't really know how it all makes sense?

well Acuna's probably being sent to AAA now, so that leaves 4 players

Mauricio at 3B/McNeil 2B/Vientos DH is how I would roll. Baty can sub at 3B/2B based on matchups and Marte can sub at DH if Vientos doesn't figure things out (which he could be in the process of doing).

i've been thinking during this losing stretch that it's kinda like the start of the 2024 season. a ton of close, 1 run games that the mets are on the other side on. i was glad to hear keith say the same thing during today's broadcast.

They won those games earlier this year, which masked a lot of issues in the offense and starting pitching.

There is still time, but I'm not feeling it this season.

All that and nobody mentioned Pete pulling level with Strawberry

this team really shouldn't be this bad but if lindor and nimmo are just going to suck, the theory of how they are supposed to score runs kinda falls apart

also pretty incredible to be running this level of payroll and not have a bonafide number 1 starter, and that part doesn't come down to non performance. they just don't have anything close to an ace. i'm not even sure they have a number 2 starter. senga hasn't thrown more than 5 innings in a month, clay holmes has been spun off his axis for even longer

the prospect people seem to be loving what the mets are doing in the minors, tons of hype around benge, reimer, and williams right now. sproat sort of faltering this year and there are still ppl who seem somewhat skeptical of tong. anyway, between those guys and vientos, baty, mauricio etc it feels like they are ripe for a big trade this offseason. they need to find their garret crochet type piece -- a young frontline SP they can acquire and extend

Dodgers beat everyone in the playoffs last year with crap starters and even some full-on bullpen games without a starting pitcher. Also Senga is definitely a #1 starter, albeit with extremely unreliable health.

I think the baseball season is too long. It's impossible to give a much of a dang about losing streaks and winning streaks. It's just hope they generally play well enough to get into the playoffs and then get on a hot streak when they get there. It's completely realistic the Mets get into the playoffs and Senga/Manaea/Peterson will all be pitching lights out in the playoffs. Stanek and Helsley too.

Apparently the White Sox wanted Jett and Sproat for Crochet and Stearns wouldn't do it. Definitely would've been worth it.

the thing we hear about stearns all the time is that he doesn't believe in paying for starting pitching, at least the big long-term deals that the cream wants. i heard someone say it was because of the injury risk? not sure. would love to hear what he actually has to say about the topic. i mean you look at what happened to burnes and it makes sense

this isn't really true, though -- they had yamamoto and flaherty who were both better than any current mets SP. they didn't consistently pitch deep into playoff games but there was still a better baseline than david peterson and kodai senga

i'd also note that the dodgers went out and signed blake snell to a huge deal, signed sasaki, already extended glasnow at a huge number, have consistently traded for SP help at the deadline etc so i don't think that even they think that "only have your starters pitch 4 IP and put the rest on your bullpen" is an advisable strategy for winning a WS

also would caution against trying to replicate the formula that prominently includes having ohtani, freeman, and betts in your line up. the mets have some good hitters, but they aren't that good

i mean, i don't disagree with any of that. unfortunately the mets don't have the same NPB pipeline as the dodgers do by virtue of being the first team ever to sign a npb player.

this is pure speculation but i'm also wondering whether cohen/stearns are waiting to see how this year plays out financially first. dodgers management was pretty open earlier this year in saying that despite all the luxury tax implications, they are still printing money due to the japan market and can remain super aggressive. attendance is way up at citi this year but idk if mets can catch up to the dodgers in that regard

The Mets were hoping that Senga would be healthy and pitch like two years ago, when he was a Cy Young candidate, and that Manaea would pitch like last year.

The former seems pretty reasonable - before Senga got hurt, he was pitching to a sub-2 ERA, albeit without going deep into games as they were babying him early due to how few innings he threw last year.

The latter I did not agree with. Manaea pitched great last year down the stretch, but I did not believe he would magically continue pitching much better than his baseball card at age 34.

Tbftfbhofmff his ankle got re injured “in the shower” basically the first week of the season and he’s playing on a rapidly crumbling ankle joint

i was going to say that the mets slump started after the nationals series with senga's injury so it'd make baseball sense if the start of this series was the beginning of a rebound. but maybe the rebound will have started with the mariners series prior? i'll take it, but only if the mets end up winning this nats series

only facing divisional rivals the rest of the month. despite the prolonged losing streaks, they are still in wild card position and have a chance to enter the playoffs with momentum. usually a summer swoon like this kills the entire vibe but it’s far from over.

Vientos seems to have finally found his form from last year. He's hitting .304/.322/.571 in his last 30 and .357/.419/.929 (1.348 OPS) in his last 7.

Baty has also been raking lately. He is hitting .280/.352/.495 over his last 30. The offense won't be the issue if these two continue and Alvarez comes back and is able to give them something.

last night was nice because so many recent losses have been - mets jump out to a nice early 3-0 lead, then the starting pitcher / defense implodes, bullpen further implodes, and it ends up being 15-3. except this time the mets were on the other end of that!

TV booth was talking about how mets/helsley think he was tipping pitches and that helsley is trying to fix that.

I did happen to pay attention. They look like they will be pretty good pitchers at some point. Thinking they will just slot in as top 3 starters on a team that fancies itself a contender is a recipe for pain.
