Verdugo will lose a towering “Stanton-esque” pop-up in the lights to lose the game in the 11th, after 5 1/2 hours of baseball
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 4 October 2021 11:58 (three years ago) link
One thing I heard this morning that, I would think, is a good reason to pick Boston: that thing mookie mentioned, where the Yankees had to designate their opponent, they had to do that in advance and chose the Red Sox over the Jays. You couldn't ask for better motivation (not that this rivalry necessarily needs that).
― clemenza, Monday, 4 October 2021 18:07 (three years ago) link
I figure BOS is likely to take it because Eovaldi has been better this season than he had any reason being and Cole had a mediocre end to his season.

Frankly I feel like that solves a few things. Schwarbs can DH like god meant him to. Iglesias (who has been great) not eligible now, though - so does that mean a cobwebby Arroyo at second, I guess?
I dunno I think I'm just grumpy at JD because I blame his gigantic salary for not being able to pay Mookie though I realize that's probably unfair

I feel like he hits the ball well when it's been pitched in exactly the right place. That's why I love Raffy and Verdugo, they can hit it when it's on their shoelaces or up at their eyes.

This was almost a perfect Yankees season. Outside one streak, disappointing to painful for most of the season, but just good enough so you couldn't ignore them, then dispatched by their most hated rival. You'll get them next year, tiger.
― Hannibal Lecture (PBKR), Wednesday, 6 October 2021 11:07 (three years ago) link
they’ve been frauds from pitch one. they don’t even do the evil empire thing right anymore, the dodgers are the ones who aren’t afraid to buy entire other teams up with reckless abandon. they tried to coast through the reg season, giving away games by playing their b lineups, and if they still probably wouldn’t have caught the rays, they still could’ve had home field in this game.

everyone in the stadium thought both of his shots off the monster were going out. I haven’t seen the stat casts but I’m sure they were homers in every other park. he was seeing the ball really well. game of inches
― mens rea activist (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 6 October 2021 14:56 (three years ago) link
I didn’t do much outward rooting for the yankees but I did scream “don’t send him!” as judge was approaching third on that second stanton hit, a really huge mistake there
also haven’t been to a big game at fenway in years and was struck by the…socioeconomic makeup of the crowd
― mens rea activist (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 6 October 2021 14:59 (three years ago) link
ESPN estimated that his second hit off the wall would have left 11 of the 30 MLB parks - per the Ringer - which i guess means something but still only about 1/3 of ballparks, which doesn't really support their thesis about the big green monster being the difference-maker
― na (NA), Wednesday, 6 October 2021 15:24 (three years ago) link
looking at the stat casts now, actually the first was only projected to go 345?? it felt huge in the stadium
the second one, similar balls have been homers 70% of the time in the statcast era. it certainly scores judge in any other park

my fav sterling mishap is by far this one, which i heard live and thought i was hallucinating: https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/sports/john-sterling-confuses-hideki-matsui-for-a-rod/1896440/
this was an incredibly satisfying game to watchthe play on judge at the plate probably the highlight. rizzo had just homered, eovaldi chased precipitately from the game, stanton misses a home run by a few feet, it takes an unexpected carom to get by verdugo… but kiké hits xander and xander makes a pin-perfect throw to the plate. they jawed a lot on WEEI about the send call and yeah it was bad, but maybe not as bad as it looked. you’re down by just 2 in a 1-game playoff, it’s the 6th inning. you need to score. if either kiké or xander’s throws are off-line there’s a chance. and the sox have not been great in the field. so to see that happen was like an exorcism of the Bad Games this season. they played great. the pitching was incredible. no matter what happens with tampa bay that was a great game.

― calstars, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 22:38 (three years ago) link
I actually think it was kind of unfair to make the Yankees reveal that they chose to play Boston rather Toronto if it had come to that. Can't they declare their preference confidentially? Do logistics require that everyone knows?
― clemenza, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 22:42 (three years ago) link
i didn’t think sending judge was so terrible. it took two perfect throws, judge still almost slid by, and the next guy up (gallo) could not be counted on to put the ball in play
xp agreed, that was lame
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 22:49 (three years ago) link
Do logistics require that everyone knows?
this is the most logical (ba-dum-dum) answer i can come up with. i was already kind of surprised that they were going to be able to choose, because it would seem like such a last minute feat to arrange all the travel, but also the merchandise and all that shit? either that, or a related reason, which is that they could declare their preference confidentially, but it would likely leak immediately anyway since so many people would have to be involved with the logistics of it
― typo hell #12: a hundreds of millions of people (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 6 October 2021 22:59 (three years ago) link
Lol, Yankees fans so want:
1. Boone fired.2. Cashman fired.3. No more analytics.
Seems like a great strategy.

― grove street (party) direction (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 6 October 2021 23:12 (three years ago) link
cashman is very clearly constrained by a stingy (by yankees standards) front office, but he's been pretty excellent for 20+ years.
#3 is obviously not gonna happen, i think maybe those twitter fans think that analytics were behind boone's weird bullpen decisions or the fact that they would never ever start all their best players in the lineup at once, resting starters willy nilly and willfully hobbling themselves into truly pitiful record in day games.

yeah i've barely watched this team for a variety of reasons but i did sit down and watch this game with intent and it was great to see an end-to-end ass kicking. there's a weird genre of baseball game where the score doesn't reflect the fact that one team dominated the other and this was a great example.
