New dimensions in mediocrity: 2023 Tigers

The biggest news of an off-season ending today at Tropicana, where the team's DH will be batting seventh, two slots too high:

There will be some noticeable changes at Comerica Park in the 2023 season.

The Detroit Tigers, owned by Ilitch Holdings, plan to move in the center-field wall at Comerica Park, the team announced Wednesday.

The center-field fence will be moved in 10 feet, making the wall 412 feet from home plate. The height of the walls will be lowered in center field (from 8.5 feet to 7 feet), right-center field (from 13 feet to 7 feet) and right field (from 8.5 feet to 7 feet).

Appreciate the reminder of who owns the franchise.

Honestly every time I checked the tigers section of MLB.com it did seem like the biggest off-season topic was the stadium adjustments, while every other team at least had some free agent stuff going on. Rough. Hope the season is more enjoyable!

Javier Báez got a late start out of the box watching his drive to LF that hit off the top of the wall for a double. Then he apparently forgot how many outs there were on Akil Baddoo's fly out to CF, resulting in an inning-ending 8-4 double play. The baserunning mishaps continue.

And then Hinch benched him.

(That was Baez's first XBH of the season, lol.)

Hardest working organization in baseball: just got a follow-up call from the Tigers after attending my first and only game there ever on Saturday. Not sure if they picked up on the fact they were calling Canada...Told the guy I loved the park and would probably be back next summer.

My first thought, of course, was that it was the front office calling me with a contract offer.

Less than three games out from the last wild card spot! This is probably the last dimension of mediocrity, heading upwards.

I knew they were hanging around the edge, but didn't realize they'd gotten so close. Will definitely be rooting for them down the stretch--seeing them come back and win that game against the Dodgers in July the most exciting thing I saw this year.

Tough week ahead (Orioles/Royals/Orioles), but they finish with the Rays and then the WHITE SOX.

The Detroit Tigers have promoted right-hander Jackson Jobe, the top pitching prospect in baseball, from Triple-A Toledo for his MLB debut, as the Tigers continue their push for the postseason with six games remaining.

Jobe will pitch out of the bullpen.

The 22-year-old is expected to be eligible for the postseason, if the Tigers advance.

For that to happen, though, the Tigers need petition to the commissioner's office to add Jobe as the replacement for an injured player — such as Sawyer Gipson-Long — who has already served the minimum amount of time required for their activation.

(Haven't watched this team play since April, when Xfinity and Bally Sports hit an impasse. When the dispute was resolved, Bally Sports was bundled some bullshit package that costs $60 extra per month. No thanks. Putting the MLB.TV subscription to good use this year.)

I thought the game I saw might have been the one that most turned around their season--the comeback win against the Dodgers, where they were down 9-4 going into the bottom of the ninth. They were 45-50 going into the game39-, 24 since. But probably not--when I look at their game log, they were up and down for the next few weeks.
