do you like it better when your team plays goodly ball or plays badly ball?

when your team plays goodly ball, you feel good but inside you are always bracing for the fall. there is only one outcome that can truly satisfy (a world series) and anything else will seem like a disappointment in the moment. every time your team loses more than 2 games in a row you wonder. is this the end or are we going all. the. way. well?

when your team plays badly ball, it feels bad to lose but maybe you become used to it. then anything can seem like an improvement. winning more than one game in a row. getting to .500, maybe even a wildcard... maybe even the world series! this is baseball, so anything can happen.

when your team plays .500 ball, you feel... nothing? you are playing neither goodly ball nor badly ball. you are drinking bud from a bottle, grilling hangar steaks and taking long walks in the evening, just to get out of the house. life could be better, sure, but also could be worse.

I guess it must be the last one because I very rarely feel either way about a game unless it’s a total banger or a horrorshow

Ofc if you follow a team constantly hovering around .500 you get the best of both experiences, sometimes the day after each other

the best is when you have a team on the rise and they arrive a little earlier than anyone expected (most recently, the orioles)

there have been no expectations for the pirates in decades, so i would happily take goodly ball

as someone who's team is currently playing very badly ball, i'm here to tell you that's good actually. i sleep goodly at night, i tune in on the radio and am not surprised when we are down, nor do i get my hopes up when we take a 2 run lead into late innings, since i know we'll blow it. when we walk if off that's a mere drop of rain in a parched desert, i know the green shoots will wither and die the next day.

so when we play badly ball, it's goodly ball actually.

two weeks pass...

i've been thinking about this and the sweet spot for me is a team that is good, wins like 80-something games, makes it into the playoffs but probably as a wild card, but you know they realistically aren't good enough to make it deep into the playoffs so you don't get that stressed about it and can just enjoy the good aspects of the team

Just seeing this now.

Definitely this. The '83 Jays were still the most exciting edition for me to root for, even more than the '92/93 or '15/16 editions. I voted "goodly." A bad team I stop watching, a team like this year's brings out all the most petulant and annoying parts of my personality.

Ideally I enjoy the oft-mediocre small-market team that catches fire in late September, storms through some outer-bracket chicanery to eventually upset some large-market fat sow and then flounder 0-4 in the WS to a like-minded team from the opposing league, inshallah.

one month passes...

the mood of the fan base of the phillies, who had been playing goodly ball but are now 'only' playing .500 ball, is bad... very bad

it is not always good to play goodly ball, imo

this for me, pretty much a lifelong Braves fan since the early 90s and i just grew up accustomed to their general routine of "win the division, get knocked embarrassingly early in the postseason." which made their 2021 WS win so much sweeter because even i clearly thought they had no shot getting their compared to the rest of the field.

the best, however, is being a non-fan of the local team and just listening to the die-hard fans having meltdowns on sports talk radio. just those 15 minutes on my drive home from work listening to Yankees/Mets fans losing their minds to Mike Francesa was a delightful elixir.

really hope that when this poll ends i never have to see/read 'goodly' or 'badly' ever again
