It's the all star game. Make the good players botch routine plays by screaming obscenities into their ears

Any other occasion: Dud.

What IS good though: interviewing players not playing during the game. Dodgers broadcast recently had injured betts in the booth for half a game and it was awesome. Clayton has often done multi-inning interviews/play-by-plays when he's injured/not-starting. That stuff is great

while i respect that opinion and in many ways agree with you, unfortunately the correct answer is SHUT UP JOHN SMOLTZ

if ilx had ranked choice voting, i could see voting fine during the all-star game and goofy games

It gave us this iconic (?) moment

"I know your mom passed away when you were young, what does Mother's Day mean to you and your brother?" - Karl Ravech question to Triston Casas while playing first base on Sunday Night Baseball. pic.twitter.com/5HEwa5dVhw

oooooof, never seen that. casas handled that extremely well, too.

z_tbd, Wednesday, 17 July 2024 01:04 (five months ago) link

as i paused the all-star game to listen to that clip, the last words were john smoltz saying "web - no pun intended"

z_tbd, Wednesday, 17 July 2024 01:05 (five months ago) link

the truth actually emerged on an episode of baseball is dead: they discussed it with him beforehand and he oked asking about it because he wanted to acknowledge the women he talks about. It’s just that Karl Ravech handled it…extremely awkwardly

it's fine during the all-star game or other goofy games but not a pitcher.

Webb just isn't good in his first inning this year.

almost entirely MAKE IT STOP

but a little bit 'it's fine during the all-star game or other goofy games' as long as

a) the player is funny
b) the announcers can run with it (i.e. not john smoltz)

talking to the managers is never not terrible (and honestly kind of rude)

mookieproof, Wednesday, 17 July 2024 01:49 (five months ago) link

false

it’s really funny when they’re interviewing a manager while their team is pitching and they give up a home run and the manager either excuses themselves looking murderous or (funnier) pretends they’re not bothered by it

I so wish they'd been mic'd: Casey Stengel, Leo Durocher, Earl Weaver, Joe Schultz.

clemenza, Wednesday, 17 July 2024 01:58 (five months ago) link

Voted "experimental". Would kind of like to see the batters mic'ed up ("I'm looking fastball away right here") but it would never happen (the defensive team could monitor the broadcast).

The players are talking while playing so there's always the novelty of them making a play on the ball in the middle of the conversation. But the managers are always trying to look focused while doing and saying absolutely nothing.

I think Jazz Chisholm did a micd up interview while he was hitting once?

I like the micd up videos where the players are just acting normally, obviously some (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHvpjyyyQe4), (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIOGlWkZdr8) are more watchable than others (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ehnq_owMaiU) - no beef with the players but sometimes they can be dry

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

Another example for the canon

OMG!

A mic'd up Jose Iglesias turns the double play with a little flair. pic.twitter.com/xauPbLMEkB
