In the End It Turns Out That It Was the Other Way Around All the Time (the Why Don't They Retire? thread)

In other words, we already know why: they were good-to-great players once, they're still getting paid very well, and it's difficult to walk away. But suggest away anyway. I'm headed to Detroit in a couple of hours to see the Tigers and Rangers; was looking over lineups, and I see Andrew McCutchen is with the Rangers this year. Everybody likes him, looked like a probable HOF'er coming out of 2015 (almost 40 bWAR at 28). But he hasn't posted a bWAR over 2.0 since 2018, and at 39, he's off to a brutal start this year.

In case you're not familiar with last sentence of Ball Four:

"You spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time."

(Bouton hung around for one more season after writing that, then came back eight years later for 30 innings. But he continued to play in semi-pro leagues even beyond that.)

On other threads this past week, also suggested Carlos Santana, Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander.
