Warren Spahn (RIP)

Warren Spahn was one of the greats.

Guy racked up all of those wins and yet lost three years to WWII, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Won 23 games at age 42, that is very impressive by any standard. From what they said on the radio, I guess he sent a letter recently to Clemens saying he shouldn't retire and should keep on pitching.

Guys like him and Ted Williams make all today's players look like spoiled punks.

RIP...Another pitching great that lost time to a war was Whitey Ford. 1950 was his rookie year (he didn't play the whole season, but his ERA was under 2.00), but he left after that and spent '51 and '52 in Korea. Then he came back in '53 and rocked the house. Can you imagine today's players taking time off from their 15 million dollar salaries and going to fight in Iraq? I think not.

Well--they weren't making $15M back then. And (don't mean to pollute ILB with politics, but...) I think there's a slight difference between WW2 and Korea than Iraq.

There was that Arizona Cardinals DB who recently quit to become an Army Ranger, which is Locked On and Hard Charging...
