Short Romp at Mets Game Could Bring a Year in Jail
By ROBERT F. WORTH

It is nothing new for an overexcited baseball fan to leap onto the field. Some women have run onto the diamond to kiss their favorite players. And plenty of fans have charged from their seats to attack the player, coach or umpire who made them angry.

But yesterday a New Jersey man earned a new distinction after winding up on the field at Shea Stadium during Tuesday night's game between the Mets and the San Francisco Giants.

The man, John McCarthy, 38, became the first person to be arrested and charged under a tough new city law against interfering with a sports event, according to the Queens district attorney, Richard A. Brown. Mr. McCarthy could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.

Mr. McCarthy jumped onto the field from a box seat near first base during the eighth inning about 9:45 p.m., a law enforcement official said. He ran a short distance and began waving a sign that said "Howard Stern for President," the official said. The game was stopped briefly because of the disruption.

Mr. McCarthy told the police he had fallen onto the field while trying to catch a foul ball, a city official said. He was arraigned last night in Queens Criminal Court and held in $2,000 bail.

One thing is certain: what was once a mere annoyance is now being taken far more seriously. In the past, running onto the field during a game was a lower-level misdemeanor, with a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail, said Councilman Peter F. Vallone Jr. Under the new law, which Mr. Vallone helped to write, "interference with a professional sporting event" can be punished by up to a year in jail and a fine of $1,000 to $5,000. If the fan makes contact with any of the players, the fine is $10,000 to $25,000.

The law was passed last year shortly before the World Series, partly in the hope of forestalling any untoward incidents there, Mr. Vallone said. It was also inspired by a number of attacks on players. Two years ago, a father and son ran onto the field at Comiskey Park in Chicago and attacked Tom Gamboa, then the Kansas City Royals' first base coach, for no apparent reason. Mr. Gamboa suffered hearing damage in his right ear. Last year, a young man ran onto the field at the same park and wrapped his arms around an umpire.

"Hopefully, people will now realize it's going to become very expensive for them to make fools of themselves this way," Mr. Vallone said.

That's a fine idea, but why are you directing this to 'White Sox fans'? I assume it wouldn't apply to the Cub fan who ran onto OUR field?

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah stence, I thought you were a Sox fan!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

(perhaps it's in reference to the two white sox fans who ran on the field and attacked that kansas city coach back in '02?)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a reference to the Cub fan who stole Chad Kreuter's cap.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops, I meant, it's a reference to the Cub fan who attacked Randall Kirk Myers.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was a reference to the Yankee fan I saw fall into the foul ball netting.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a reference to that fucking Yankees fan who screwed Baltimore.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

actually I was gonna title the thread "The Only Record the Mets will Break This Year" but then realized maybe they'll go for strikeouts or something too.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was a reference to the Yankee fan I saw fall into the foul ball netting.

i remember watching that game and wondering aloud "did someone just fall from the upper deck?!??" and then the guy sobered up enough to realize he was pretty much screwed and wouldn't come down on his own. damn game was delayed 20 minutes.

I thought he spent the entire time like a drunk guy in a ball tank, joyously flailing around, pumping his fist every few minutes until he was fetched.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

he was flailing around then he realized he was screwed and just lay down. he just didn't want to move. the cops must have convinced him that it was in his own best interest not to force someone up there to get him.

but it was weird seeing something fall in front of the camera for just a split second.

I thought this thread would be about how to avoid getting Hepatitis B.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

How do I avoid getting Hepatitis B?

Practice safe sex –use a condom.
Avoid injecting drugs, and do not share needles.
Do not share personal items such as razors or toothbrushes.
If you get a tattoo or body piercing be sure the instrument is sterilized.
Wear disposable gloves if you give first aid.
If you are exposed to hepatitis B, an immunoglobulin shot may protect you from infection.

You nasty! They're yet again in danger of having their '62 loss total broken, this year by the No Fixed Expos...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

IIRC, the Illinois legislature did pass a very tough law for anyone who jumps onto the field during a sporting event after the Cub fan Eric Dybas tried to tackle an ump at Comiskey Park.
