The Fate of A-Rod

Where do you guys think he should end up? Or where do you he will? There are obvious positional difficulties with both Boston and New York, the two teams he has said that he would accept a trade to. If I was him, I would hope for a trade to a young team with a good chance of making a great run. He could really establish himself in that role, perhaps in a similar way as Jeter has with the Yankees.

calstars (calstars), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem is he's not worth that kind of money, no matter how good he is. Also, I'd be interested in seeing his stats with him playing somewhere other than Arlington and also with a competitive team.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Yankees need pitching, but they might as well plop down the bills and make it happen, as there are no other teams that can afford that contract.

They could move Jeter to 3b or 2b, depending on where he feels comfortable in playing.

You would have to wonder how the friendship between Jeter and A-Rod would work out having to play together in NY. You don't see the personal jealousy spats between baseball players as often as in the NBA or NFL, but this might be a situation that it could happen.

The Red Sox have hitting out the yang, they need pitching, at least one good starter like Schilling and a couple of pitchers in the bullpen.

The Mets would be a poor fit for A-Rod, as that team needs just as much work as the Rangers. Nothing like having even MORE reporters asking why your team sucks even though you are one of the best players in the game.

lol i would humbly suggest that a-rod is just aging but would perhaps controversially suggest that if PEDs do affect performance, a-rod's mind-boggling '07 might be evidence and his "confession" re: the texas years might be a way to avoid coming clean re: nyc PED usage. not that i really care if he in fact did use PEDs, dude's a HOFer regardless.

I just don't think A-rod really gits that it's too late. It's just like with Clemens, even if he were to win, the guy is already guilty in the court of public opinion for being a fraud and is going to be pretty much a mostly loathed baseball figure for the rest of his life. The guy should just shut his mouth and go enjoy his millions and bimbos.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 12 January 2014 04:47 (twelve years ago)

I wouldn't say I feel sorry for A-Rod but a full year's suspension is still completely unprecedented and seems unfair. I'm not sure how A-Rod's actions were more "obstructive" than, say, Melky Cabrera and his fake website. And he still hasn't tested positive. But dealing with drug issues by scapegoating specific players is a hallmark of the Selig regime.

"Loathed for life" is too strong a term. If someone like Jim Rice could be transformed into the clean face of home run baseball by the same people who despised him when he played, anything is possible.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 12 January 2014 05:06 (twelve years ago)

How did they arrive at 162? Will that come out on A-Rod's appeal? Number seems almost as random and unsupported by CBA as 211?

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Sunday, 12 January 2014 17:54 (twelve years ago)

His home-run rate for a full season right now is about what, 25 and declining? (41 in 992 AB his last three partial seasons.) To hit 800, he'd have to keep that up, even without the suspension, through his age 43 season. He looked like a good bet for 800+ after 2007, but it probably started to gradually slip away over the next three seasons.

http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/10282537/new-york-yankees-relegate-alex-rodriguez-spring-training

NEW YORK -- If Alex Rodriguez were to attend spring training next month despite his suspension, the Yankees could relegate him to the team's minor league facility, baseball officials told ESPNNewYork.com on Sunday.

The Yankees will not make any final decisions about their course of action until speaking with the commissioner's office about the loophole in the suspension rules.

"These are uncharted waters," one official said.

Rodriguez has made it known he will be in Tampa, Fla.

"As of now, Alex is planning on attending spring training," his spokesman, Ron Berkowitz, said.

Berkowitz said he could not answer if Rodriguez would still go if he were slated to be on the minor league side.

Technically, according to sources, Rodriguez is allowed to train at the club's facility during spring training because his discipline for violating the Joint Drug Agreement covers the regular season and the postseason, not the preseason.

Since Rodriguez is not on the Yankees' 40-man roster because of the suspension, one official said that would give the Yankees the right to send him to workouts with minor leaguers instead of Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira and the rest of his big-league contemporaries.

One official said the Yankees could go as far as to have Rodriguez on the minor league side but instruct their coaches to basically ignore him -- to not hit him grounders or throw him batting practice.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 08:38 (twelve years ago)

To people following closely, yes, but I doubt that's true as to general reaction out there--I suspect Selig's getting exactly what he wants, a perception that he's being tough on a villainous reprobate (for the time being, at least). I say that as someone who's far from a fan of his.
