A done deal. SF had their sights on Lee to fill the hole at 1B, not counting him out yet.

the mlb report

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It might not end up a bad trade for both sides. The Cubs have had notorious problems letting go people one year before they get it together.

I think the Marlins will perhaps plan on moving Lowell to 1b and play Cabrera at 3b, if it doesn't work out. They have an extra outfielder with Juan Encarnancion, who is a good (not great) player.

Derek Lee could fit pretty well into the middle of the Cubs lineup and if he hits his hitting averages, he will be an upgrade.

They might be able to deal Randall Simon, if he is not a free agent.

I think Derek Lee is an amazing pick up for the Cubs. I think behind Vlad, he's probably the second best 5 tool player (although he is a 1B so the arm factor doesn't come into play) in the game.

He's fast, has pop, and a gold glove as recent as 2003.

We can't forget Derrek Lee's splits: 11 HR at Pro Player, 20 on the road, .242 at Pro Player, .297 on the road.

Score!

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess he hits a bunch of long fly ball outs at Pro Player stadium, this could bode well on many days at Wrigley with the wind blowing out.

earlnash, Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Florida essentially traded Derrek Lee to get (take your pick of either) Guillermo Mota or Paul LoDuca, all the while spending more $$$ @ 1B on Carlos Delgado, and losing Brad Penny in the process.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

And scroll up for your Pro Player Cavern crippling-stats that held the man down, for all you D-Train hobos. It's no wonder Florida plays small ball.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Correction: Delgado makes roughly half what Lee makes ($4M vs. $7.7M).

Lee .392/.472/.731 22 HRs
Delgado .323/.415/.578 14 HRs

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 June 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Haha well Lee wouldn't be hitting that in Florida.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Lee is completely insane this year, I don't think anybody knows what to make of him.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 26 June 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

Prospectus article suggests that Cubs' #1 and 2 hitters will depress Lee's RBI opp'ties in his Triple pursuit... Also, "While the National League is mostly clustered around .300, Lee currently sports a batting average on balls in play (BABIP) of .432, suggesting that he has been quite fortunate to have so many of his batted balls fall in for hits, and that his batting average is likely to diminish as the season progresses."

"likely to diminish"?

fearless projection.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

That's just to bring some Cub fantasists back to Earth.

Nate Silver has a (premium) article on Lee and the Crown today, and after running his 'puter comesup with this, which was in the back of my intuition:

"Lee has about a 10% chance of winning the Triple Crown this year, and Pujols has about a 15% chance of winning the Triple Crown."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

What's the chance of them ending up in a tie though?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

42.

was thinking about hee sop the other day

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 July 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

i can assure you that nothing gets the adrenaline going like a crowd of 7,000 chanting "HEE SOP! HEE SOP! HEE SOP!" as an intrepid .216 hitter steps to the plate in the bottom of the 8th in a one run game

What happened to Mike Nannini? 15-5, 2.70 with 36 BB and 151 K in 190 innings for Lexington (A) in 2001. Never made it past AAA, apparently stopped playing after last season.

What is "Tonight Let it be Sonnenstine" a joke on? I just love that titleand I don't know why.

felicity, Monday, 14 July 2008 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

i dunno but it makes me thing of "tonight, let it be lowenbrau."

chicago kevin, Monday, 14 July 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

o_O

chicago kevin, Monday, 14 July 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

"Tonight Let It Be Lowenbrau" = late 70s / early 80s (I think?) beer slogan (xpost)

"Tonight Let It Be Lowenstein" = Chris Berman player-name goof (dig that 1982) on the slogan back when he was a young ESPN Sportscenter desk jockey

"Tonight Let It Be Sonnenstine" = me predicting that I'll pick up Andy in my fantasy league & watch him get trounced just before the ASB

David R., Monday, 14 July 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, was Lowenbrau just a Chicago thing?

This one seems more like the parody!

God bless 1984.

felicity, Monday, 14 July 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

(dig that 1982)

Is that the free agency/contract year effect?

felicity, Monday, 14 July 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

no, i can remember ads for it growing up in new england.

xpost.

chicago kevin, Monday, 14 July 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

HOLY FUCK I REMEMBER THAT COMMERCIAL!!!!

chicago kevin, Monday, 14 July 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

It was national, I think (or at least I remember seeing that basketball reunion commercial.)

Alex in SF, Monday, 14 July 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

I remember it, too.

(Suzian ILB poster factoids: The missus had relations [not the disease spreading variety] w/ AW lead singer pre-Gentlemen; an ex-co-worker DJs at AW lead singer's LA watering hole.)

Yes, omar.

No, David R.

Andy K, Monday, 14 July 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

AW lead singer used to work at Tower Records on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood and would always make a comment on everybody's purchases.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 14 July 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

"Pitchblende, huh -- French band?"

(AW lead singer observed book with "film noir" in title of book on then future missus' bookshelf and asked [joked?], "Is this about black people?")

Andy K, Monday, 14 July 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

from what i hear AW lead singer likes to crack gay jokes in front of m@rk l@neg@n because the latter is a raging homophobe.
