Count yourself there, spanky.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 June 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ESPN listed making the All Century Team as his #2 accomplishment, what a fucking joke. We all know he edged out BB cuz the fans prefer Genial Black Man to Surly Black Man.

He's about twice the player McGriff is, let's hope he's the last to reach 500 this year.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

no man, you know how the fans are, it's because of those consecutive 56hr 147rbi seasons. the fans love those big ribbie numbers and back then 56hr was more astonishing than it is now.

How did Bonds & Griffey compare in '99?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

it's easy to understand why the fans would have chosen Griffey, even if they were wrong (though it's a choice that isn't completely without merit). He was only trailing Bonds by 47 HR in the career stakes at that point, too, which is crazy considering he's trailing him by 176 or something now.

Bonds in 98-99:

g156 ab552 r120 h167 2b44 3b7 hr37 bi122 bb130 k92 avg.303 obp.438 slg.609 obps1.047

g102 ab355 r91 h93 2b20 3b2 hr34 rbi83 bb73 k62 avg.262 opb.389 slg.617 obps1.006

Griffey in 98-99:

161 633 120 180 33 3 56 146 76 121 20 5 .284 .365 .611 .977
160 606 123 173 26 3 48 134 91 108 24 7 .285 .384 .576 .960

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

If you go up to 99 and look at hitting stats and ability to field the outfield, Griffey was every bit as good a hitter as Bonds and was a MUCH better outfielder.

Bonds for all of his hitting prowess has always had a girly arm in the outfield, just ask Sid Bream.

Griffey in his youth was a witch in centerfield with the glove.

Griffey the same as McGriff, what are you smoking? Jr. has fell apart in Cinci and has acted like an ass quite a few times, but criminy his first 10-12 seasons and his peak performance are about as impressive as it gets.

Griffey also hit like a fiend in the playoffs. Do you remember that series against the Yankees?

earlnash, Monday, 21 June 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Earl, Morbius is only "comparing" Griffey to McGriff in that they're both slated to reach the 500 HR plateau this year.

Re: Bonds' arm - I was under the impression that Bonds had one of the best LF arms in the game today (or, at least, that's what the anecdotal evidence suggests). ILB SF contingent to thread!

And it's safe to say that the "girliest" OF on the team, arm-strength wise, is gonna get put in LF, so the frilliness of the dress is going to be relative. (I'm not sure that explains Bobby Bonilla puttering around in RF, but I'm not Jim Leyland.)

And (I've no doubt it's been suggested before) what I've heard about Griffey's tentativeness in the field this year (since most of his injuries these past few years could be rightfully connected to his reckless abandon in the field as a young'un) (or his reckless abandon as an older'un), he might be / should be moving to LF in the very near future.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

>Griffey the same as McGriff, what are you smoking?

Nobody made that argument. I was trying to dismiss it.

Sorry, Bonds was a better player than Jr in the '90s -- not by a huge margin, but enough.

From Baseball Reference: Bonds' edge on '90s "black ink" (ie, leading league categories) on Junior is, as Stuart Scott would say, sick. Bonds' 3 slugging titles to Jr's one, 4 on-base crowns to one... Bonds led in Adjusted OPS every season from '90-93, and was in the top 3 '94-98. Griffey NEVER led the AL, finished in top 3 twice. Yeah, Jr hit about 30 more homers.

Outfield arm is one of those talents that just doesn't come into play enough to be a cornerstone of a Who's Better argument.,,, BUT, Barry had 10-15 OF assists in eight of his seasons -- none since '97, it's true. Griffey's had ten or more in 7 seasons (also topping at 15).

Both first-ballot HOFers, but Bonds has always been better on a career basis.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I must have had a SABR headrush and read that wrong, my appologies.

It must have been the blazing speed of Sid Bream at work. Of course that game was over as soon as Francisco Cabrera came to the plate, those no name guys in situations like that are usually the most dangerous hitter in the game for one at bat.

It will be interesting to see if Griffey can get to 600 and if he does how long it takes. He has definitely went through some tough times, so probably deserves to be able to put it back together. McGwire was able to come back after quite a few big injuries to put up some killer numbers for a couple of years.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Griff will play til he's 40 or so and I think he's got a reasonably decent shot at passing Mays, for one. Any higher would be surprising, but I guess it's possible, he's still reached 500 HR at a younger age than Hank did.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Bonds does have a weak arm, he hides/makes up for it by getting the ball back into the infield as quickly as he can. Even with a girly arm, he did win eight Gold Gloves because back then he was fast as hell

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The Mets' radio team, particularly Gary Cohen, were giving Junior hell for lollygagging his way to first on FOUR groundballs Tuesday night. Last night, Cohen said he asked Reds' folks if Griffey is hurt, and if he ever runs to first; he says both responses were "Absolutely not."

And yet he's breathing down Bonds' neck as the top NL vote-getter, and not even in the majors' top 40 in VORP. Shows what a well-timed pre-500th drought will do for your visibility.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Marty Brennaman gave Jr. hell a couple of years ago for 'cadillacing' on the air and got himself kicked off of the Reds charter plane for a couple of days for not supposedly sticking it to the team. The Reds gave in a day or two later after getting roasted in the media and by local fans.

earlnash, Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Griffey is 1-for-27 since #500. He's arguably a worse choice for a starting All-Star than Jeter.

You blab about no-hitters in the 5th innning, too? Who're you, some Dave O'Brien wannabe?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Haha, he must be on your team! I thought he was on hstencil's.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

No, he's not on my team - 1 of the only Reds that ain't. I just want to see Griffey play a sorta-full season again.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

he is on my team. and yet, my team sstill sucks. (2 ip by a relief pitcher who didn't give up homers somehow negates griff's 3 rbis and dinger last night? I DONT UNDERSTAND YOU YAHOO)

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Bonds has a relatively weak arm, but that's why he plays LF and not RF. He was terrific in the 90s, and never really struggled to throw guys out. He can still one-hop the catcher on a medium deep fly, although he really should have been DHing as recently as 2000, and having a zombie like Grissom in CF didn't help matters.

The Sid Bream play is certainly not the highlight of his defensive career, it's true.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Too bad he can't play against the Cubs every day.

God I'd love to see the Sox pick him up.

It was too good to be true. Poor Jr. Says he'll be back by spring training. Good thing the ChiSox didn't bite.
