When are ver BoSox going to actually field their team?

FUCK A FUCKING MARK BELLHORN AT THIRD BASE. (He just let a shot by Gary Sheffield go under his outstretched glove for a left-field double that put the Yankees up by one in the bottom of the eighth inning.)

Where is Youkilis? Meueller? Beuller? Anybody? I thought we had a team!

Manny in left, Johnny Damon in center, Trot Nixon in right.

Ortiz, Pokey, Nomar, and Youk/Meuller.

Am I missing something here?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate everything.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually how about Nomar and Ortiz can BOTH be DH, depending on who the pitcher is, Pokey at short, Bellhorn at second, Youk at first and our actual third baseman at third base. Or maybe an extra 30 minutes of infield practice.

And would a bunt or two kill anybody?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Bunt schmunt. Don't give me that "little ball" asscrap. If they just FIELDED THE BALL and HIT WITH GUYS ON BASE, there'd be nothing to bitch about (except for Timlin's crapitude). Lest we forget that Pokemon had a bout w/ the oopsies yesterday, too. I'm chalking these dark days up to some ill-timed slumpage that can be easily overcome and forgotten come August.

Gammons wondered aloud on "Baseball Tonight" how many times this image will be replayed in NYC tomorrow:

woah fuck. try again?

It's "Mueller." Pronounced "Miller."

Picard Maneuver (Leee), Thursday, 1 July 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to admit that Ortiz botch couldn't have come in a worse place or bear a worse resemblance...

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 1 July 2004 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

This team is lifeless. I seriously think Francona needs to go. He's too soft for this market. He constantly makes shiteheaded decisions like not having Youkilis hit last night instead of McCarty who couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. If they are out 10 by the all star break, Tito will be walking. Thats my prediction.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 1 July 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

How about subbing for Ortiz at first after he made the last out in top of the seventh? That could've saved the game. Twice.

briania (briania), Thursday, 1 July 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

who are they gonna sub at first who has any experience there? once nixon is healthy enough to play right ortiz will be back to dh'ing and kevin millar will be back at first. fact of the matter is this team isn't hitting like last year's team (ortiz and ramirez excepted) but they are fielding like last year's team which is no f'ing good. mueller's bum knee changes the complexion of that line up immensely. i know nixon and nomar are still in "spring training mode" (incidentally, i've always found that to be among the lamest excuses. if you're not ready YOU BELONG IN THE MINOR LEAGUES!) but if they can't contribute francona needs to sit them down. i think they should be fielding the best team possible, not what will be the best team in a month or so.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 1 July 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure, Millar booted one Tuesday, but he would seem to be the late-inning defensive choice.

briania (briania), Thursday, 1 July 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Briania OTM, except McCarty's been the 1B defensive specialist. Millar's a lesser boot boy than Ortiz, but he's no Mienkiewicz.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

millar had started the game in right, he was pulled in favor of pinch runner gabe kapler when millar reached second in the 7th. this was before ortiz came to bat in the inning so by rule he could not be the defensive replacement.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

MahCahtey!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

in hind site mccarty would be the obvious choice but to be fair if the game had gone extra innings ortiz would've got one more ab. of course, if mccarty had been in there it may have been a shutout. or maybe he would've booted clark's smash as well, we'll never know. i'm not going to fault francona on keeping ortiz in the game, i wish ortiz would've moved his goddamn feet to get in front of the ball. if he had been in good defensive position and muffed it only one run would have scored.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. Poops, save the FIRE FRANCONA talk for next year. Give the man more than 3 months.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Why pinch hit for Mirabelli who was 2-3 with Varitek who is about 0 fer his last 40. The bald asshole needs to go away.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I know Rivera is really great but wtf was Varitek doing swinging at a fastball up above his helmet?

Watching last night I'm beginning to think there's a real chance the BoSox won't even make the playoffs, if the Angels and the A's pick up steam.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF indeed - I would pinch hit w/ Varitek, too, but fuuuck dude try swinging @ a strike. I'm more upset at that called 3rd strike DOWN THE HEART OF THE PLATE Slap-Happy Kapler looked @ - what, you were expecting Rivera to break off a curveball, Gabe?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 1 July 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Rivera hadn't worked in a few games, and really looked strong.

briania (briania), Thursday, 1 July 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, if the Sox lose to whoever Halsey is pitching tonight your season is over.

Nomar sits out (so does Giambi, but the Yanks have infinity on the bench) in the most important mid-season game the Sox will play this season. Unfrozen caveman can't single-handedly save you.

The Chef!
O-vah.

(I am drunk)

Shaun (shaun), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

A-Rod got Manny out twice on the same play.

Shaun (shaun), Friday, 2 July 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
I'm stunned by David R's prescience here. I'm just going to quote twice. First:

I'm chalking these dark days up to some ill-timed slumpage that can be easily overcome and forgotten come August.

Consider them forgotten. Second:

Millar's a lesser boot boy than Ortiz, but he's no Mienkiewicz.

Woo hah!!

Here's my question: we have a long reliever with a 1.59 ERA and a 2:1 K:BB ratio and we use him for garbage-time EXCLUSIVELY. What's his name? You know his name. El Brujo. He was always one of my favorite players on those great Yankee teams from the last millennium - him and Posada - and I couldn't believe it when the Red Sox got him. He's the same pitcher he was then, so I just don't understand why they don't play him more.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Sunday, 12 September 2004 14:14 (twenty years ago)

I R GENIUS!

Because of last year's crapitude, I imagine. I would think he is higher on the bullpen depth chart than chumps like Lescanik & Myers, & perhaps even Timlin (ideally) (though he was impressive during that week-long stretch where he came in late & got the Sox out of some tough jams, I'm still wary), but they seem to be gunshy in using RM in any key situations. Possibly because of set roles, I dunno. I imagine he's a shoe-in for the post-season roster, though (assuming the BoSox make the post-season) (ain't taking nothing for granted, the Angels' crappy starting pitching notwithstanding).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 September 2004 00:35 (twenty years ago)

They're using him a little. But juuuust a little. The guy can go like three innings if he has to, but I guess this just shows how good our pitching really is.

I still don't trust Millar. I swear he's going to end up pulling a Knoblauch at some point.

who else thinks the AL world series contender will not come from the east?

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 18 September 2004 09:34 (twenty years ago)

That was a hell of a catch Manny made last night against the Yanks.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 18 September 2004 11:56 (twenty years ago)

I bet he pulled it out of a fan's hand. Manny's sneakier than he looks.

So I guess we have our answer: the Red Sox will field their team in the 9th inning of a game in which they're ahead.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 September 2004 12:24 (twenty years ago)

And said team won't even have to field the ball! Much.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 18 September 2004 14:05 (twenty years ago)

who else thinks the AL world series contender will not come from the east?

no, the red sox are still in the al east. please don't try to dissuade me until after i've finished my coffee.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Gammons pointed out last night that Manny's second-half OPS is about 200 points under his first half's.
