I'm probably about three weeks away from throwing my allegiances in with the White Sox. Dammit, Cubs!

They've got some bad mojo this year. I don't even blame Dusty. Of course another team would be out of it completely at this point, they have to give us a sliver of hope. Dammit.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 16 July 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

If Prior's got some torn ligs, forget it. I'll buy an Esteban Loiaza jersey tonight.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 16 July 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

A small, sick part of me is hoping he'll need Tommy John surgery just so that when he comes back in 2006 or whenever, he'll finally be 100%.

MRI results later today.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 16 July 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

you know what they say about TJ surgery these days....guys come back stronger than ever and even with increased velocity....

argh

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 16 July 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

MRI comes back negative -- doctor said Prior's ligament is "robust." They are doing a bone scan as I type, apparently, to see if there is any type of stress fracture.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like his doctor was coming onto him!

oops (Oops), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

So what I wanna know is, was the whole Achilles' Heel injury a cover-up for elbow tenderness? And also, I thought Prior's perfect mechanics (as the media has no problem reminding us over and over and over) would mean no serious injuries would ever befall him?

Anyway, the whole thing is weird, and seems to have been engineered from on top so as to not hurt ticket sales and/or give Cubs top brass cover from fans bitching for them to make another big move post-haste.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

no, they were two separate injuries with two distinct (yet overlapping) rehabs. the cubs don't have to worry about ticket sales, much like the bosox the stadium is a draw in and of itself.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

true but attendance has definitely increased over the past couple years due to them being contenders.

oops (Oops), Friday, 16 July 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

and yet, somehow, the White Sox will somehow always just *suck*. The Cubs will win first.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 16 July 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

mook, you sure you don't mean the Cubs sucking? If not, maybe a gander at baseball-reference.com is in order...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Saturday, 17 July 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

no. no baseball-reference. i hereby vow (despite not caring either way) that the cubs will win the WS before the white sox.

should i be wrong, track me down o former ajax records and i will buy you an evening's worth of beers.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 17 July 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cubs may very well win the WS before the Sox do. They certainly have the built-in fanbase to guarantee competitive payrolls from here 'til infinity.

But as far as historical suckiness, the White Sox can't hold a candle to the Cubs, who haven't posted back-to-back winning seasons since 1972 or so.

In a town with as shitty baseball as Chicago, little stuff like that matters.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Saturday, 17 July 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

White Sox fans are in just as bad a place.

The Big Hurt is going to be gone for two months on the DL.

The Sox record isn't that grand since 1972.

earlnash, Saturday, 17 July 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Both the Sox and Cubs sucked pretty badly in the '70s and '80s. However, since 1990 the Sox have never finished lower than 3rd place in their division, while the Cubs have only finished above 3rd place twice during the same span. The Cubs have posted some atrocious W/L records in the last 10-15 years -- 97 losses, 95 (twice), 94, etc. -- while the Sox have remained somewhat competitive. All of which is no mean feat considering the payroll differentials between the 2 teams.

As for Frank Thomas, I am guessing he's gone for this year -- a big guy like him won't heal quickly from a stress fracture. Given their offensive woes lately, they really do need to plug that hole in the lineup with someone capable of a reasonably high OBP. People are screaming for them to re-sign Crazy Carl Everett, but I'm not sold.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 18 July 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ya - we're not seeing thomas again this year. and the everett thing is news to me, i mean the craziness is one thing, but he's having a terrible year. i don't really think they'll be able to compensate for the loss of thomas.

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 18 July 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The Tribune only seems to have discovered in the past year that perhaps winning might make them a few more bucks, so the front office has been much more active. They have wisely picked up some rising talent instead of going for all over the hill free agent gang.

They made a couple of stupid moves with money in the early 90s that really hurt. I'd like to know how much different things would have been if they didn't screw up with Maddux and could have kept him around. It probably cost them at least dozen or more wins a year for a decade, as they never had a true #1 starter until Kerry Wood came around and then he got hurt and didn't get on track big time until a year and half ago.

The 94 strike really hurt the Sox (and many other teams). They seemed to lose the strong momentum, both in the wins and cash columns, that had built up for a couple of years before the strike and seemed to not get it back. Even in 93, Jordan upstaged their playoff series and it was over before people even realized.

earlnash, Sunday, 18 July 2004 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Whaddya know, the Sox have procured Crazy Carl E. and cash considerations from the Expos for Jon Rauch and Gary Majewski. Welcome back, Carl -- hope you do well.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 18 July 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

How long til they trot out Minnie Minoso and Harold Baines for the stretch run?

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Will the Cubbies risk doing major damage to their immediate and long term future by starting Prior Tuesday? Will the results of tonight's tussle w/ the Cards be a factor?

Reminds me of when TLR started an injured Pujols in left field last year and stated if it caused Puj's injury to worsen he should be fired on the spot.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe the Cubs 'O' of late. Alou hasn't done anything for a couple of months, Aramis hasn't played, Sosa...okay, SS would probably have 23-25 HR if he hadn't missed time, but he's still not the Sammy of '98-'02. I guess we'll have to live with him being merely 'very good' as opposed to phenomenal. They really do need to get Nomar, that would at the very least provide a boost of energy, and it's been so long since the Cubbies made a really ballsy trade for a major star in the middle of the season. Actually, it's been so long I can't remember one off the top of my head. And I don't count Crime Dog!

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW, Crime Dog is available again!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 July 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhere in south Florida, Hee Seop Choi is crying softly to himself in fearful anticipation.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 19 July 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear!, Sammy shot his wad during his great performance in the HR derby. He almost drilled himself into the ground on that first swing-and-a-miss...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 19 July 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, poor corky.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 19 July 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Sammy is such a stooge, I can't wait until the Cubs rid themselves of him. He's a tailor-made Yankee.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 19 July 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

um, no.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 19 July 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

man you'd think Sammy was Derek Bell from all the vitriol

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Sammy got booed more than once at Wrigley tonight. To his credit, he had a nice at-bat where he actually (gasp) took the ball the other way for a run-scoring single. That's 2001 Sammy, but he's largely forgotten how to be that kind of hitter.

I can't defend Zambrano's childish behavior if anyone brings it up. Note how many Cubs ran to his defense after he beaned Edmonds the second time. Dusty looked downright embarassed, as well he should.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

my favorite moment was 3rd base coach "wave 'em in wendell" kim giving the gimpy ramirez the green light around 3rd on the bloop 150 foot hit to right. reggie sanders made a horrible throw and still had ramirez by 2 full strides. the replay showed ramirez looking absolutely shocked that he was getting waved around. and judging by the way he was grimacing at second after dragging his dead leg around the paths for his double it's no wonder.

i tuned in to cubs cards last night just long enough to see the little mound conference b/w sammy and chris carpenter. que paso?

j.q. higgins, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Sammy: A little help?

Chris: Sorry.

Sammy: That's cool.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I would bet play money it was Carpenter telling Sammy he was supposed to bean him.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

just when you thought the Cubs were safe with a 6 run lead...

[flashback! third post down in this thread]

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

And the game is tied due to an 8th inning So Taguchi clout.

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

So. Taguchi.

HR.

Why was I born where I was and therefore doomed to endless torture?

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

does anybody want tony womack? i will entertain serious offers.

Toe Saguchi!

And I will entertain serious offers for Matty SlowMo.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not every day you see an 8-2 lead turn into a 10-8 deficit, with one guy hitting 3 homers.

Wow.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

remember all that "LaTroy Hawkins will save the Cubs 'pen!" talk? yeah....

I'm entertaining serious offers for my team allegiance.

no images allowed?

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The "pee stars" are a vestige from when the Sox hosted the All-Star game last year...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Wendell Kim apologized to the City of Chicago for waving Aramis around. It was in today's papers.

2. Gear!: You understand that the Cubs and Sox have nearly identical records, right? The Cubs would still be contending in the NL Central if not for St. Louis.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I know, but still...this team has some bad karma this year. They need to make a trade, if only to reinvigorate the clubhouse. We need a Nomah!
