T/S: DAY GAMES VS. NIGHT GAMES

Night games, all the way. No blinding. No sunburns. You feel less guilty for getting trashed. You feel less guilty for having to sleep after the game.

day games. Less excuse for idiots who show up in the middle of the 2nd.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

weekday daygames are pretty nice if you can swing them, usually more of a "fan" atmosphere than the weekend/weeknight warrior crowds.

If you're in LA, that's people who show up in the 3rd and leave in the 7th.

I guess a lot of it depends on what park you're at, too. I would prefer a day game at PACBELL/SBC over a day game at Dodger Stadium anytime. Or an XFL game, for that matter.

I am posting from the perspective of someone who used to work at Wrigley.

I like both. Prefer day games in April, September and October (in-person attendancewise), or if LaRussa is using 7 pitchers.

I'm always so worn out by the end of a day game but I can never justify resting, since it's only 5 PM. It throws me off.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

day games in April? Damn, Doc, you one artic-lovin' dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

arctic, even.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

As a rule I avoid Shea til May 1, but went to an April night game this year. Never again. But on summer eves by Flushing Bay, there's almost always a breeze.

I've shivered through a memorable October 4pm game that went extras (Mets-Giants Agabayani HR), but the happy outcome compensated. Playoff baseball, bunting and all, is more festive in daylight too.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Down here in Texas, April and September are just about the only months you can get away with day baseball.

Of course in Houston, that's alleviated by the retractable roof. I went to a day game in May a couple of years ago and the roof was closed, even though it was only about 85 degrees. To me, that should be roof-open weather. I have no idea what criteria they use for determining whether the roof is open or closed.

Day games were a weird phenomenon back when the Astros were still playing in the Astrodome. The roof panels, which were originally clear, were kinda translucent, so day games had a strange, not-quite-natural glow about them, even though the stadium lights were lit.

gygax is exactly correct. I am a horrible snob and sick of the drunk trash at night games.

T/S: Drunk Trash vs. Scorecard Keeping Trash

(I go with the score card keepers, because they don't try to kill me in the parking lot)

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Kerry actually keep score?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

is scorekeeping considered to be something deserving of ridicule?? (seriously)

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Keeping score is righteous! Step off!

Night games all the way. They're even better in April and Sept. when the weather cools down. Nothing like a night game when it's 65-70ish outside.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 22 July 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

A day game at 65-70 would be nice, but those are exceedingly rare at the Ballpark.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 22 July 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

night games all the way. as a player, i think my stats were significantly worse in day games, and i hate hot weather. the sunshine bores the daylights out of me

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 22 July 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

What is going on today? 12 of 16 games scheduled today (Bal and Bos are playing two) are day games.

It's Super Get-Away Day.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 22 July 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't this happen yesterday too (lots of day games)?

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just wrong to have the Rangers playing an afternoon game today. I've been painting outside all day and I feel like I lost 10 pounds of sweat.

Direct sunlight, no breeze, sort of humid - I bet it feels 110+ inside the Ballpark.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

From the CBS Game Center:

Ricardo Rodriguez of the Rangers left the game in the top of the 4th inning after being hit in the back by a line drive.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

A load of day games on a getaway Thursday is pretty commonplace.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

is scorekeeping considered to be something deserving of ridicule?? (seriously)

Two ends of the spectrum is all.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

A load of day games on a getaway Thursday is pretty commonplace.

I think normally there aren't a full slate of games on Thursday though. Three-game series that started on Monday are done. With the weird schedule this week with everybody playing two two-game series during the week, nobody has an off day today.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Broken right elbow. I can't imagine how painful that is.
