Good luck to the NL East... Yikes.

Sheff holds this honor in my baseball universe: I've never seen anyone hit a line drive harder than this guy. He is a menace.

Though . . . it was a delight watching him go pffft in the nlds last year.

Slightly Off-Topic: Has there ever been a more sorry attempt at fan cleverness than "Sheff's Chefs?"

Getting Vasquez could be huge. The guy is young and has a big time arm. You always have to wonder how someone who has played his whole career in anonymity in Montreal is going to handle playing in the Zoo.
They didn't really give up as much as I thought it would take to get him, but I suppose Mtl. would take anyone who doesn't get paid much.

In a related note, you have to wonder about the conflict of interest of the wealthist team in baseball are getting one of the best available players from a club owned by the league. That is a screwed up situation.

I'm waiting for the Sox to sign Milwood. Then I'll wait for the Yankees to trade for Kevin Brown. THEN I'll wait for the A-Rod / Manny deal to be finalized. And that's when I will officially give up on fantasy baseball, because if the Yankees & Red Sox hit Florida next March with the teams they have (or are threatening to assemble), it'll be hard for the fake stuff to keep my interest.

not so fast on the sheffield deal... mentions yankees interest in guerrero instead due to sheff stall.

It looks like the first shots across the bow in the war between the primadona and the boss are now being fired.

I will be very suprised if Sheffield works out with the Yankees. He might play ok, but I think the Yanks would be better served just getting a more low key player. If they are stinkin', Sheff won't help matters, remember how he freaked out in LA. Atl and Florida are chilled out, the press and the fans were never going to get his goat.

Vlad would be a better choice, might cost a few more bucks, but on a team with a couple more established stars all he has to do is show up and play well.

Of course, the year it really all falls apart for the Yanquis, it isn't going to be pretty for anyone involved. Their expectations are just too high these days.

Shef's out of the picture for the Yanks, no?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 11 December 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(I hope not, because he stands a very good chance of being an Everett-like albatross for whomever he plays)

The point that Sheff doesn't get through his thick skull is that outside the Yanks, there are like two teams that MIGHT pay that kind of cash for his services.

Wake up players, the 80s are OVER. The greed between the players and owners hasn't quite killed the golden calf, but it is pretty tarnished.

As a player, when he is healthy, Sheff delivers. He is just another too rich, too young player that seems to think the world revolves around him. If he was a star WR in the NFL, he would probably be considered a "gamer" compared to Keyshawn or Owens.

Everett seems to be on another plane of wacky.

I don't think Sheff is too young at all... although his talent seems to be growing. He and Eric Young are coming out here in a couple months to live with Barry in his annual winter workout. My old roommate saw the three of them at a taco shop in the South Bay last year and said all three were very nice, friendly and modest.

South Bay represent!

I also hope that Sheff does go to the Yanx, because now they're starting to court Vlad which frightens me (though I realize that if the Yanx do sign Vlad, no other NL (West) team will get him to harm the One True Team That Counts).

Leee Iacocca (Leee), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

My phrasing was off, Sheff has been a rich spoiled brat in the pros since he was 19 and has continued to play star trip games on and off since that time (see Milwaukee, San Diego & LA).

His leaving Florida was management dumping payroll and he seemed to work out pretty well in Atlanta. Other than wanting more cash, I don't know why he wants out so bad.

earlnash, Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

gotcha, poor reading comp. on my part.
