What's up with Giambi?

Somewhat alarming story...

Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi is undergoing tests for a potentially fatal condition sometimes caused by intestinal parasites, his personal trainer told the Newark Star Ledger.

"He told me, 'I don't care about even hitting .220. I just want to feel better,' " Bob Alejo told the newspaper for a story published in Monday's editions. "He's exhausted, and it's not getting any better."

Giambi is being tested for a parasite called entamoeba histolytica, Alejo said, which can cause a potentially fatal condition called amebiasis. The parasite can be transmitted through water and food, among other ways, and it can embed itself in the intestinal lining, making it undetectable except by very specific tests, according to the Star Ledger's report.

Giambi has been tested for cancer(!) and HIV(!!) in the last week. Both tests came back negative.

Giambi is scheduled to see another infectious disease specialist on Monday and will undergo specific tests for E. Histolytica, the newspaper reported. The results of those tests will determine whether the Yankees decide to put Giambi on the disabled list again.

There is concern that Giambi, who has missed 13 starts this season, might have to sit out the remainder of the season to rest. He's sat out four of New York's last five games; Giambi started at first base Friday in Boston but skipped the remaining two games of the series. He is hitless in his last 19 at-bats.

The parasite can be transmitted through water and food, among other ways

a quick google reveals:

entamoeba histolytica: a parasite transmitted by fecal contamination of drinking water and foods, but also by direct contact with dirty hands or objects as well as by sexual contact. It is also frequently diagnosed among homosexual men.

So, um....Kevin Brown has some parasites too doesn't he?

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 July 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Just sayin', is all.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

you should go to the yankees' bboard and point that out.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Mention the number Derek Jeter wears, too.

jesus guys, they even stopped joking about this at the sox board. get well soon, jason.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

so would an "eat shit and die" joke be in bad taste here?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 26 July 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It's bad taste one way or another.

I believe K3vin Br0wn's wife has the worms too.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 26 July 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Learn a little more about entamoeba histolytica from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Ya all remember that story about the writer who claimed to have a homosexual relationship with a famous ballplayer on a major market team.....hmmm.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

that was before Giambi was in New York, though.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

As much as those guys travel, it could be anything.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought morbs informed us that the player in question was more than likely named doug glanville?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was Rey Ordonez.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Ordonez was my guess all along. Finally, somebody backs me up on that theory.

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I just hope it's not a similar theory to your "Paul Molitor looks like Morrissey/is a closer" theories.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No, the Molitor/Morissey connection was entirely due to the former's sideburns and suit in those HOF induction pics. The closer thing was an ill-thought-out response to the alleged ILB reliever bias.

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I figured it was Brady Anderson.

He probably thinks it stinks.

Speakings of the YankS CATalanatto with the BJ's would be a good NUMBER TWO hitter.

Wow.

mattbot (mattbot), Saturday, 31 July 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ok those aren't even remotely logical anymore, stop

ignorant question of the day: can benign tumors become malignant? he's surely going to get world-class care but i just wanna make sure.

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 31 July 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

From an online medical dictionary:

"The term "benign" refers to a condition, tumor, or growth that is NOT cancerous. This means that it does not spread to other parts of the body or invade and destroy nearby tissue. Benign tumors usually grow slowly.

"In general, a benign tumor or condition is not harmful. However, this is not always the case. If a benign tumor is big enough, its size and weight can press on nearby blood vessels, nerves, or organs, or otherwise cause problems."

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 31 July 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

First a parasite, then a tumor... it doesn't make sense to me. I don't buy into the male butt sex conspiracy and I don't know anything about medical conditions, but I don't see how a benign tumor could put someone on the shelf for this long or how the doctors (some of the best in the country, I'm sure) couldn't have seen it before if it's large enough to be affecting him this bad for this long. It seems more like a system weakened by lack of whatever supplement or steroid kept him running or some kind of drug problem.

three years pass...

16 hits. Five of the doubles and 7 of them HR's. I think I love him.

i'd somehow forgotten what a career he had.

He's hit three home runs this year--all of them in his last three starts (May 27, May 29, June 1). I guess that's what first brought him to your attention?

clemenza, Monday, 3 June 2013 02:05 (twelve years ago)

ive always found it impossible to dislike the guy, even when he was a yankee

i wanna be a gabbneb baby (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 3 June 2013 02:10 (twelve years ago)

he's hit 5 HRs - but three in his last three games, which indeed is what caught my eye.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 3 June 2013 02:48 (twelve years ago)

I saw Jason Giambi hit the two homers against the Reds last week. Lack of PEDS or not, the old boy (and he is looking quite gray) gets ahold of a pitch, he's still got some serious strength. Both of those homer were long gone, especially the one to dead center in Cincy.

earlnash, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 04:12 (twelve years ago)

Giambi will forever be the greasiest yankee

10+ years ago i chatted with a very talkative orioles usher during a rain delay in baltimore as he held forth on the players of the day. he hated mike mussina, said he was standoffish/rude, but absolutely loved giambi -- apparently he's super outgoing and friendly and remembers everyone's name, etc.

not sure if that will make him a good manager, tho -- maybe he should be a politician

http://tribevibe.mlblogs.com/2014/06/16/in-tribe-clubhouse-players-daughters-made-welcome/

All season, Indians’ fathers have been bringing their daughters into the postgame clubhouse on Sundays at Progressive Field. The idea came from designated hitter Jason Giambi, who said he was thinking outside the box as he prepared to interview for the Colorado Rockies’ managerial vacancy before the 2013 season. Giambi has a 2½-year-old daughter, London.

“I had to take a step back. ‘If I’m managing, how would the team represent me?’ ” Giambi said Saturday before the Indians faced the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. “That’s what you have to do, you have to have that connection with your players. There’s so many little girls, and daddies always have their little girls. It would be something cool they could share.”
