What scars do you have? Have they yet healed?

A while ago, I thought that I'd come to terms with Game 6 from the '02 you-know-what. But then I came across an article that recounted in depth the unravelling of Oh Felix OH WORRELL OH NEN!!!!!!!! :_(

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Kenny Lofton, Don Denkinger, the Metrodome, Donovan Osbourne vs the Braves, Rolen vs Cintron, the tarp vs Vince Coleman.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(all have healed except for Lofton.)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Scioscia HR off Gooden, Kenny Rogers walk with bases loaded vs Braves, and 2000 World Series? what 2000 World Series?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Francisco Cabrera/Sid Bream. And No.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The first night I ever got drunk, which was at my cousin's wedding was the night Garvey hit the homer off of Lee Smith in 84. That was bad. I felt the mojo happening last year and turned it off, as I was getting sick, so I missed the killing blow against the Marlins.

Both of the baseball strikes in 81 and 94 made me question the humanity of man. The one in 81 was worse as I was much younger and baseball was about the center of the universe. If I ever see Donald Fehr in public, I would punch him in the chops. In hindsight, I can somewhat understand the strike in 81, but 94 was fxxking stupid for both sides.

I just wish there was a true Dodger fan around these parts so I could remind them about Tom Niedenfuer giving up those two jacks to Ozzie Smith and Jack Clark.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex Gonzalez, Game S*x, no.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

dude: all i can say is tony tarrasco and that snotty yanquis kid.

and i also curse the name armando benitez.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I felt the mojo turning in Game 6 of the NLCS last year too. I was at work and "watching" on yahoo. I couldn't bear it anymore. Everyone at work wondered why I was so down, I told them "the Cubs just lost the NLCS".

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I had my cell phone in my hand before the 8th inning started, I was going to call my dad to make sure he was going to see the Cubs get to the World Series. Like any superstitious fan, and not wanting to jinx the team, I decided to hold off until the last out was recorded.

And then Kerry hit that HR to put the Cubs up in Game 7 and I was back believing the whole destiny/mojo thing was on the Cubs side again.

I feel awful right now just typing this.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally predicted that HR to my roommate right before it happened, though. That was kinda cool, despite the final result.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Game 6 2002 WS, Giants up serieswise 3-2 and gamewise 6-1. Dusty Baker comes out of the dugout in the top of the 8th after Russ Ortiz gives up a bloop single and hands Russ the game ball. Brings in Felix Rodriguez. I think only 6 players from this team are still playing for them today less than 2 years (I'm not counting Nen). I was absolutely shit-faced at this point which probably helped dull the pain. The hangover the next day did not help matters.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

why would Dusty hand the game ball to Ortiz if he's taking him out?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

BECAUSE HE "WON" GAME 6 OF THE WORLD SERIES!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

okay that makes no sense to me.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's called a game ball. The catcher grabs another one from the ump and whaddaya know, we're back in business.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

plus he (Dusty) paused to think about it for a second

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the pitcher gives the ball to the manager, the manager points to the pen, new pitcher comes out, manager gives him the ball. That's the first I've heard of this "game ball" thing. And why would Ortiz want the probably-still-in-use bloop single ball?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

BECAUSE HE WAS WINNING 6-1 IN THE TOP OF THE 8TH OF THE "DECIDING" GAME OF THE WORLD SERIES!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: because he's a dipshit.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to say DB's dipshittiness wasn't inferred by that idiotic turn of events, but it can't be overstated.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax!, don't get angry, it's just questions.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

In a "big game" (see also: milestone games), the game ball is often considered of special significance and treated as such.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

kirk gibson; no

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax why did you have to do the play by play? And why did I read it again?????

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at Game Four of this, when that home run was hit by that one guy whose name I can't bear to type or say out loud. My mom never took us back to Old Comiskey after that because she was so traumatized, and I was glad when they tore it down.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

My most recent scar is just a series of Frank Thomas popouts during the 2000 ALDS. Not any one particular popout stands out in my mind, but gosh there sure were a lot of 'em.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Kerry's gonna kill me for this, but back during that particular ALCS, I was an Orioles fan, and even more psyched about that HR because T!t0 L@n6rum was a former Louisville Redbirds (AAA) player.
