Q: Billy Beane, G.M. for the Oakland A’s, has made sabermetric stats a major part of his “value” philosophy when building a baseball team. He’s frequently said that his method will build regular season winners but it doesn’t seem to work in the playoffs. I think Greg Maddux has to be considered about the best all around pitcher of his generation, as beyond his pitching prowess, the guy is great with the glove and quite competent with the stick. He is one of those guys that seemed to actually take serious being able to lay a bunt down.

Of course, Alfonseca looked like a complete jackass at the plate. Of course, he hit a weak ground ball which miraculously found the side of the first-base bag, kicked up over Lee Stevens’ head, and scored two runs.

Dontrelle Willis: +8.7 runs per season. Willis' hitting is strong enough that there’s a real transaction cost when he plays in the American League—there’s about a win's worth of value that simply isn’t going to be realized in a DH league.

The absence of pitcher hitting stats is my least favorite part of leaguewide fantasy baseball. There are NL-only leagues for that reason I hope.
