Let's face it, the Evil Empire is still in the driver's seat, but I thought before the seemingly invulnerable 10-1/2-game lead was built, they could crumble if hit by 1) slumps and injuries to those aging stars, and 2) a series of Steinbush explosions. I think we're more than halfway there.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, man...that'd be sweet.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

in my opinion starting pitching is what made the yankees better than the other contenders in the al. it was the engine that drove that team. this year (and mainly since the end of july) the starting staff seems to have thrown a collective rod. they're struggling mightily.

i'm almost afraid to read shaughnessy's column in the globe today comparing the yankees of this year to the sox of '78 (because i'm afraid i'll believe it). off the top of my head i'll equate javy vazquez to luis tiant, kevin brown to dennis eckersley, mike mussina to bill lee (yankees don't have any lefty starters) and playing the part of mike torrez none other than esteban loaiza.

The Yankee's went 16-12 in August, which is average.
The Red Sox went 21-6 in August, which is great.

That is most of the Yankee lead right there. The Yanks are not collapsing as much as just playing average while the Red Sox are the hottest team in the AL.

The Yanks schedule is a bit more forgiving than the Sox, as they only contenders they have series with down the stretch are the Twins and the Sox. The Sox have two left with Anaheim and series against the A's, Rangers and Yanks.

I think it could come down to how the Sox play in the next week, if they stay hot and annihilate the A's, Angels and Rangers, that should open up the wild card lead and crate the stage for the three game series against the Yanks in the next to last weekend of the season in Fenway.

El Duque is pitching pretty well since joining the Yanks. He is 5-0 in nine starts, but is only averaging a bit over six innings a start. I figured that injuries could kill the Yanks chances, but Moose and Brown are starting to get healthy.

Starting today the Yanks (and all teams) will be able to call up some sacrificial lambs from the minors to fill in blow outs like last night, so they don't have to use their main relievers.

I don't think the Yanks are the favorites to win it all, as I think the AL is open and they could get beat by any of the other front runners in the playoffs. I don't think NY will miss the playoffs. The Yanks losing the division would be big, but I think the Red Sox are going to have to continue to roll, which may or may not happen.

Steven Goldman of BP, five days ago:

"The best hope is that Steve Karsay re-emerges and combines with QuanGorMo to let the Yankees have a Reds '99 kind of finish, with the starters going four and the bullpen holding the opposition after that. Stay tuned, stay skeptical."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that bullpen is headed for a breakdown. too many innings, the red sox cutting into their lead means they won't get to rest the quality arms for the playoffs.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, Omar Vizquel went 6-for-7 in that game!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

the 6 hits tied a MLB record for most hits in a 9 inning game.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

he's no rennie stennett

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The word in Tribe-town is Omar will not be back with the Indians next year. He's been like a son to me.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Brandon Phillips, come on down (and take a pitch)!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

There's been talk of getting Omar V. on the White Sox.

I mean, they've done so well with Robbie and Sandy Alomar, why not go with yet another post-35-year-old Indian star?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear Gaylord and Jim Perry are looking for some work.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

So the ChiSox are going to let Jose Valentin walk & replace him w/ Omar? Why, that's brilliant if by "brilliant" I mean "totally wrong-headed and endemic of the short-sighted Bizarro thinking Kenny Williams has exhibited since taking over as GM". And I do mean it. The second way.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the bizarro thinking of Daily Herald, actually.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

This is getting exciting.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 4 September 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it's weird that he was thinking enough to punch the wall with his glove hand, but not enough to stop himself from doing it in the first place

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Brown must have remembered Crash Davis' advice from Bull Durham.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the robot malfunctioned today: giving up a homerun and 3 singles in what had been a close game (2-0 orioles in the top of the 9th), spoiling mussina's fairly decent performance. the fat one, sir sydney, 2 hits the yanquis.

meanwhile the bosox are rallying back against the rangers with a grandslam and a solo shot to come within 2 (8-6) in the top of the 8th.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 4 September 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

man the robot almost blew it today. the Os are fighting!

Yankees ask for forfeit as Devil Rays fail to arrive on time

Just in case you wanted another reason to hate the Evil Empire.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 6 September 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i have to say, the dizzying highs and terrifying lows that characterize this year's orioles is a bit much for my delicate ticker.

it seems like after the yanks lead in the east shrank in almost the blink of an eye, they've held fast at 2.5 for ages.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha - "ages" = 3 or 4 days?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, AGES!!!

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

W/L Record Sept as of 9/13:

Yankees 9-3
Red Sox 9-3

El Duque has three of those wins for the Yanks. All three losses from two series with the O's.

The Sox are able to sweap through the Angels and A's, win two of three from the Rangers, but then split four with the Mariners. NY has KC for three, Boston has the D-Rays (who the Yanks beat up) and then they face off this weekend.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I also have to say, Sheffield has been much better in NY than I would have ever thought. Sheff's stay in Atl. must have mellowed him a bit, as he hasn't had any blow ups in the press (yet) like I thought might happen in NY. Possibly playing in A-Rod and Jeter's star shadow has been a good thing.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

vasquez was a mess against the o's on friday. loaiza pitched a couple decent innings in relief, then one bad one. what's the projected yankee playoff starting rotation?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I would imagine El Duque, Moose and then go fish.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 13 September 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, Royals 17, Yankees 3 in the eighth.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

'Tis pity Oakland had that 5-game losing streak, it looked a week ago like the Yanks were in danger of losing postseason homefield to the A's even if the Red Sox didn't catch them.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

GO ANGELS!

I can't think of many recent playoff contenders getting 15+ runs dropped on them twice within 2 weeks. Though that's really just a perk of having Tanyon Sturtze on your pitching staff AND actually giving him work.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just sayin', is all.

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sox beat Mariano Rivera for the second time this season!

Maybe the Sox have a chance, but I think they need to sweep this series.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 18 September 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The Globe headline is "Apple High" - I have no idea what they're talking about. Does anyone else?

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 September 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Apple High" = "Cowboy Up"? Or some "High Noon" reference?

And, yeah, Earl, it's a 99.9999% certainty that the Red Sox need a sweep to have a legitimate chance at taking the divisional title.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 18 September 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

You have to love that Red Sox fans are given a glimmer of hope on Friday and by Monday morning all is back to normal. At least the Patriots won again, so they have that going for them.

Lieber has pitched pretty well in his past few starts, although that is a guy I would not want to count upon in a playoff game.

Right now, I think this could be the A's year.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

apple high being both an old time reference to getting sauced on apple jack and the feeling of euphoria after beating the yankees in ny (the big apple). also note the two day hangover that immediately follows.
