Who are your guys' choices for MVP by team and division?

AL West
ANA - Vlad Guerrero
OAK - Erubial Durazo
SEA - Ichiro Suzuki
TEX - Michael Young

I'll take Vlad for his speed, power and defense. Ichiro's flashy style and flirting with the Hits record is worth mention but it really didn't do much for the Mariners this year. Texas was tough between Young and Texeira but I stick with Young for his speed and defense.

AL Central
CHA - Paul Konerko
CLE - Travis Hafner
DET - Carlos Guillen
MIN - Johan Santana
KC - Mike Sweeney

I'm gonna go with Santana, his dominance over the last 2/3rds of the season is not only Cy Young worthy but completely dominating every team in his path. Honorable mention to Hafner who (although a DH who I'm not a big fan of voting for) is putting up pretty intense #s.

AL East
BAL - Miguel Tejada
BOS - Manny Ramirez
NYY - Gary Sheffield
TB - Aubrey Huff
TOR - Carlos Delgado

Tough call between Manny and Sheffield but I'll give a slight edge to Manny because he's not a Yanqui.

NL West
ARI - Shea Hillenbrand
COL - Todd Helton
LA - Adrian Beltre
SD - Mark Loretta
SF - Barry Bonds

Bonds has shown no sign of wavering during yet another career year, shattering many season records (OBP, OPS, BBs) in the process. For runner-up it's a toss up between Helton and Beltre, edge to Beltre for playing closer to sea level.

NL Central

CHN - Aramis Ramirez
CIN - Sean Casey
HOU - Lance Berkman
STL - Jim Edmonds
MIL - Lyle Overbay
PIT - Jack Wilson

A couple of close team races here: Berkman slightly over Beltran, Edmonds over Pujols (whatever happened to Rolen?). Edmonds is really making a late charge and getting the slight edge over Pujols for my choice for NL Central MVP.

NL East
ATL - JD Drew
FLA - Miguel Cabrera
MON - Brad Wilkerson
NYM - Mike Cameron
PHI - Bobby Abreu

I'll give JD Drew slight edge over Abreu. Whatever happened to Thome?

NL: Bonds.
AL: toss-up between Santana and Vlad. I don't think Santana will even get the Cy, sadly enough.

I agree with nearly all -- but c'mon, Big Unit in Arizona. ... I hadn't seriously considered Santana, but he has a higher VORP than ANY position player in the AL.

A-Rod's on fire, to the point where he's at least co-MVP in the Bronx, unless you're giving Sheff points for a separated shoulder.

Chavez has been just as productive with the stick as Durazo and is the best 3b glove in the league.

I'd put Mora just a hair ahead of Tejada, still. Lowell over Cabrera, Dunn over Casey.

Bonds unanimously or cry "hanging chads." Vlad by a nose over Manny, Santana, A-Rod, Sheff, and a shelved Guillen.

Gammons on ESPN last night said Rivera is the Yanks' MVP, and I'm inclined to agree. Sheff's been terriffic, A-Rod has put up a lot of empty numbers, but Rivera's headed for another 50-save season on a shaky staff that lives or dies by its closer.

>A-Rod has put up a lot of empty numbers, but Rivera's headed for another 50-save season<

Hmmm, none of Mo's saves are "empty"? Which of A-Rod's extra-base hits are empty? or maybe it's his empty willingness to leave his HOF position?

It's statements like that which make one question Gammons' "deanhood." The high success ratio of a typical save situation is the least grasped fact by mass-media pundits. Tom Gordon has been just as vital as Rivera, but their overall contribution isn't as great as Sheffield, A-Rod, Jeter, Matsui or Posada.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure, Rodriquez is having a great season, but also has been somewhat unreliable in the clutch. Rivera is the model of reliability, so much so that the team's game plan revolves around getting to him in the ninth. That's valuable.

briania (briania), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'all are overlooking Sheffield as the Yanqui's MVP.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Sheff's being overlooked. He may well get enough votes to be the league's MVP.

briania (briania), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

He may well get enough votes to be the league's MVP.

yeah, i fully expect him to be the al mvp despite it being so g-d obvious that it should be manny. i wonder what life is like in manny's world. pretty damn good i'll bet.

a lot of a-rod's XB hits have been empty because ALL XB HITS ARE NOT EQUAL. yeah he's improved but a-rod was awful in the clutch 90% of the season and in my mind there's no contest b/w he and sheff right now. i reserve the right to change my mind but at the mo arod's only the choice if we let VORP make the MVP selection for us and y'all know how i feel about that. and i don't see anything wrong with giving sheff points for playing with a separated shoulder.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 20 September 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Sheff started the season hurt too.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

what was A-Rod's excuse?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Theo Epstein was in disguise at Yanquis home games, shining a flashlight into his eyes from the first base line whilst he attempted to swing during clutch situations?

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 20 September 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaron Rowand looks more like the Chisox' MVP than Konerko, when you factor in the numbers from CF.
