i tried to fix that table, but i think that tables aren't really telling the story about johan, he's just mowing down team after team with reckless abandon. if he doesn't win the Cy i will stage an international protest. As I pointed out on the MVP thread, he could win the MVP at this point.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 19 September 2004 22:01 (twenty years ago)

His stats this season are almost in line with Big Unit's, right down the line, but poor Randy just doesn't have those gosh darn intangibles that you need to get the wins!

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 19 September 2004 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday, I was thinking about all the "Shannon Stewart for MVP" blowhards from last year. Santana's performance really makes them all look like even bigger morons than they were twelve months ago. Like last year, it's Minnesota's pitching that has excelled in the second half, causing their division to go from a close race to a runaway.

Stewart, despite being injured for part of the year, is putting up more or less the same numbers that he did last year, which were more or less the same numbers he put up every year with the Blue Jays (AND the same numbers he put up during the first half of last season with the Jays). He's played more games for the Twins this year than last, and he obviously wasn't getting any MVP consideration for contributions with the Blue Jays in the first part of the year.

So, according to the people who voted for him last year, Shannon Stewart should be the MVP again, right?

Oh wait, I guess he didn't "ignite the offense" this year like he did last year. He must have forgotten to brush up on that skill during the offseason.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 19 September 2004 22:51 (twenty years ago)

I just noticed that he hasn't given up a run in his last four starts, or 29 consecutive scoreless innings (plus more from the start before that?).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 20 September 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago)

30 scoreless innings + 12 straight wins

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 01:03 (twenty years ago)

... and wins in 11 straight starts. What's the record for winning consecutive starts? I think it's 15 or 16? Halladay won 11 straight starts last year too -- and won the Cy.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 20 September 2004 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Johan's biggest cheerleader weighs in.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:49 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i haven't read gleeman's blog in awhile (like before the season)(just haven't had the time) but i figured 'god he must just be wetting himself over santana this year' and 'god he's gonna have a stroke if schilling wins the cy young'.

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 12:56 (twenty years ago)

don't know how much time you have but if you ever wanted a thorough analysis of santana's last start...

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago)

wow, that is quite a feat of geekiness.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Santana has more wins (6) than walks (4) in the last 30 days.

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 25 September 2004 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Watch someone fuck up big time and somehow cause the Cy to be given to Mariano Rivera

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Saturday, 25 September 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Due to the rain-forced twinbill today, Santana-Mussina is supposed to be the 4pm game, no ESPN as far as I know...

One of my fave BP writers, Derek Zumsteg, gives his (nonexistent) MVP vote to Santana. Vlad looks like he's nailing it down this week, even if (big if) the A's prevail.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 13:52 (twenty years ago)

He just stepped onto the mound at Yankee stadium right now... I suggest you tune in if you like baseball.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:21 (twenty years ago)

...and have an mlb package, jackass!

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:32 (twenty years ago)

i meant "tune in" as in: MLB.com, sporto.

more pressing: why is Santana out after 5?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:51 (twenty years ago)

what do the twins gain by kepping him in?

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago)

(not meant sarcastically)

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Mental domination: this is the ALCS in my opinion.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:59 (twenty years ago)

except it's not, and therein lies the answer.

i'm boycotting mlb.com gameday until maura implements those features i told her to.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:05 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather see Mow-han do his mowing of the Evil Empire in the playoffs. The less AB's the Yanks get before that, the better.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:17 (twenty years ago)

See you dorks. Now the Twinkies bullpen is scarred by this... If Santana would have pitched 100 pitches (instead of 70) and handed off the baton to Nathan, the Twinkies would have a psychological advantage over the Yankees come the playoffs.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:37 (twenty years ago)

ALSO: There goes his Cy. 3 days ago, Schilling pitched 7 innings and gave up 2 against the very same team.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:42 (twenty years ago)

first sporto, now dork...i'm putting my foot down and drawing a big fucking line in the dirt, buddy. cross it if you dare.

re the cy race w/ schill, the only thing santana could possibly do, as far as i can tell, is pitch a couple complete games (to make up the diff b/w the two). obv that's not going to happen, but he must have it 99% in the bag, right?

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:53 (twenty years ago)

bearing typical voter logic:

#1: if Santana would have got the win, it would have pulled his record to even with Schilling (21-6).

#2: Santana finishing the last week of the season by beating the Yankees would have been too much for the NY Media to ignore. the schilling victory is more resonating as is.

#3: w/r/t: complete games.... Santana has 242 innings pitched to Schillings 227.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah i thought schilling was a win or two ahead but a second ago when i looked at their repsective stat pages i could've sworn they showed identical records...i suppose you might have a point about a media boost from beating NYY (in what is probably a meaningless game) but come on, he's made it all the way up the 20 win mountain (easily the most important voter-stat, surely) and is besting schilling in virtually every pitching statistic in existence...i refuse to believe the voters are as ignant as many like to think.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:53 (twenty years ago)

I assume you're joking, Gear. Welch had one of the flukiest seasons ever and 27 wins is eye-popping (so was Eck's 0.70 ERA that season, or whatever it was, which obviously helped Welch a ton).
There's no way the voters would value Schilling's one extra win over Santana's dominance in almost every other category. Particularly when he's the ace of a division-winning team.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:06 (twenty years ago)

that's also a big factor (much less so in Cy than MVP but still) - santana's indisputably the best player on his team; the same cannot be said of schilling.

Gleeman details how Twins mgmt. of Santana's first few seasons has potentially hurt his career and, now that negotiations have begun on his eventual contract extension offer, could hurt the Twins' chances of retaining him.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Serves those asshats right. I wonder if similar stuff can be said about someone like Justin Morneau (who probably spent at least 1.5 years more in the minors than he needed). Or, like, most of the Twins prospects from the past 2-3 years.

Wife of Twins Pitcher Santana Has Baby

MINNEAPOLIS - The wife of Minnesota Twins pitcher Johan Santana gave birth to the couple's second child just 45 minutes before her husband stepped on the mound Wednesday night against the Kansas City Royals.

Yasmile Santana gave birth to an 8-pound, 6-ounce girl, Jasmine Alejandra, at 6:18 p.m. at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina. She is the couple's second child.

Johan Santana, the 2004 AL Cy Young Award winner, was not present for the birth.

Gina Rivas, the wife of Twins second baseman Luis Rivas, called the Twins clubhouse from the hospital and gave the news to Santana just before he headed to the field for his pregame warmup. Yasmile was scheduled to be induced Thursday morning.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 21 April 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

He gave up 4 straight hits today:

2 bloop singles
then a shot up the middle which scored the runner from 2nd leaving runners at first and third
then a homerun to Sweeney

other than that he looked pretty much untouchable (only 1 other bloop hit, no walks, 10 Ks in 7 innings).

He lost today! -- beaten by Bartolo Colon and the Angels.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 1 May 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

He won yesterday -- 1 ER in a complete game. And zero walks. His total number of walks for the year: 5. ONE PER TEN INNINGS. That is fucking mind-boggling.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Saturday, 7 May 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

have you seen what teammate Brad Radke is doing? 50 IP, ONE WALK

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Saturday, 7 May 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

WTF, that is BANANAS. Silva only has one in 29 innings, too (though the 39 hits kind of cancels that out). Even suckass Kyle Lohse has only given up 3 in 21 innings.

Dig this: Radke, Silva and Lohse have given up more home runs than walks. Santana's at a 1:1 ratio. That is scary.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Saturday, 7 May 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Schilling's lack of K is disconcerting.

Santana's lack of K is interesting.

Wang's non-lack of K is mindboggling.

Mike (NY): Should Santana have gone for 20 k's? Unselfish team play, or lack of killer instinct?

Rob Neyer: (12:39 PM ET ) I don't know that it was his decision, Mike. If he'd pitched the ninth, he'd have thrown more than 120 pitches for the first time in his career. The Twins have always babied him, and so far that's working out pretty well for everybody.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

Do I think Johan Santana is of sound body? HELL NO! Santana was asked if his problems of late are physical and he said no. When asked a second time he said no, by the fourth or fifth time he finally broke down that he had an issue with his back that Bobby Ojeda said could have forced him to alter his delivery. Then there is the issue of his decrease in velocity and the question of whether Santana has a tired arm or (gulp!!!!!!) the dread DEAD ARM!!!.
