MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, can somebody delete one of the ATL-HOU threads?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone up for some predictions?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Houston in 4. Beltran goes bananas. Jaret Wright implodes. Furcal & Giles make huge errors. Andruw Jones looks & acts disinterested. The words "veteran leadership" are invoked multiple times during the ABs of Bagwell & Biggio.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Clemens buckles tonight, as has been his style (IIRC) in huge games of late, while Wright looks masterful.

Elsewise, a classic rematch is in store a la the 2000 NLDS.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and Braves in 5.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

As I said in the other thread, Astros in 5.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I said Astros in 4 in the other thread and I'll stick to it.
David OTM (and deserving of a gold EXCELSIOR star).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

How about an over / under re: when the announcers mention the Juice Box flagpole in center field?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Kent gets plunked. Clemens get plunked. Jeff Kent's moustache get's plunked. Braves win 4-3.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Clemens is wild... almost looks rattled.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

E9, 2 BBs thus far in the bottom of the 1st...full house for Estrada.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

LEATHER & LARCENY!

(Note: I'm not even watching the game.)

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate Clemens, but I can't stand the Braves either. I can't decide who I want to win this series less.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ausmus only had 5 home runs during the regular season? Wha?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I know!!! And it's in Atlanta not ANYONE CAN HIT A HOMER HERE AT ENRON PARK.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Jared Wright is falling apart. Crimony.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I make another predicition? I WILL GET SOME IN THE NEXT WEEK!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

No prediction too bold here folx.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Hate Clemens all ya want, feel good for B & B. I do!

Re Ausmus, 5-HR guys can hit another in the postseason if they want. (Al Weis, 1969? Buddy Biancalana?)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Clemens decides to load them up for the 2nd time in oh... 3 innings.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

He shd just hit Thomas and burn fastballs by Wright.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Braves reverting to their usual anti-clutch postseason stylee. Fuck.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Or strike out Thomas - whatever works.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Gygax, Rich Aurilia is the color guy on ESPN radio! He's boring!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

He can't hit for shit either as Seattle and San Diego found out this year.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Injury Delay"?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw him crank out a grand slam against the White Sox 2 years ago that cinched the game for the Gnats, though.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

BBT: guess who he was batting in front of?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Re Ausmus, 5-HR guys can hit another in the postseason if they want. (Al Weis, 1969? Buddy Biancalana?)

-- Dr Morbius (wjwe...), October 6th, 2004 4:14 PM.

yeah, well, or Matheney YESTERDAY

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno Gyg, was it................................BONDS?!?!? It was a really crummy game for White Sox fans that started out great: Colon had struck out Bonds his first 3 ABs, and then Barry goes yard in his fourth AB, tying the game with a monster shot to right center. Aurilia's slam broke the game open, but at least I got to my car a bit earlier than I normally would have.

Btw, Braves trying real hard to set the record for most men LOB in a postseason game. CHOKE.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

If I'm not mistaken, that is Ausmus' second post-season homer. The other was in Atlanta as well, I believe.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Awesome, even Jason Lane got in on the homer party, and made a good play in the 9th as well. And the Astros got by without using Lidge or Miceli, so they'll be fresh if needed tomorrow. I'm a little worried about Beltran. They're saying bruised ribs, but that sounds like it could affect his swing and his throwing.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Any wagers on which Brave gets plunked tomorrow in response to Beltran's taking one in the ribs?

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Bagwell with his first-ever postseason HR.

C'mon, Braves!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, he only hits homers at the end of blowouts.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Astros catchers brought the big sticks to Atlanta.

(The previous message included an html end tag directed at ignorant sports talk radio callers that disappeared.)

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a chilicheesedog that was fanfuckingtastic yesterday.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

If David Justice says the word "wheelhouse" one more time, I'm kicking my TV in.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

also it was sorta fun to be at there when everyone realizes that yup, the braves are gonna wilt this postseason too. and it was good to see andruw homer if only to shut up my friend who kept talking about how clemens was gonna strike him out four times and shit. o and ratio of overheard conversations about the falcons vs. overheard conversations about the braves: 6:1. at a braves game.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

have i told my story about how when halle berry visited my base in italy on some uso jaunt my friend picked her up at the airport wearing a david justice jersey? anyhow, yeah.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

There is some political reporter on public radio here whose name is Bill Wheelhouse. I always crack up when I hear his name, and mentally substitute my own Bermanism (Bill "right in his" Wheelhouse)

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh hey, Blount, that reminds me, your Dirty Birds are gonna get a taste of my boy this weekend!

ATL -6.5 DET

yikes!

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that spread's insane. i was actually gonna e-mail you and see if you wanted to do a friendly wager on it til i saw the spread.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 7 October 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF, Lidge is pitching in the 7th?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 7 October 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

JD Drew caught stealing = would have been winning run after 3 straight singles off Lidge.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 October 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ADAM LAROCHE I KISS U WITH TONGUE AKIMBO.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I take it back. Tying the score doesn't deserve the tongue.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ATL's working on a 4-hitter here through 8.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 October 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

JUSTICE MADE ME KILL MY TV!!!

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard something on the radio on the way home about Atlanta protesting the game due to some nefariousness involving the bullpen phone. Can anyone elaborate?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 7 October 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Furcal looked safe at first!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 7 October 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Justice just said that the Astros catcher "pumped his glove" before deciding to throw to first on Furcal's sac bunt. Interesting.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 7 October 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Lidge in for his 3rd inning after 32 pitches... sound familiar?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 October 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Garner went out to the umps and claimed that their bullpen phone wasn't working. It took like 5 minutes for the umps to sort things out, meanwhile the Stros reliever got a bunch of extra time to warm up.

Cobby Box thinks that Ol' Scrap Iron was prevaricating.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Thursday, 7 October 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Braves should've put this one away in the 8th. Crizzap.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 7 October 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Lidge looked pretty shaky.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 7 October 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

And there ya go.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 October 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait for boldbury to come on here saying "Houston should have never traded Dotel!"

;-D

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 October 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Which closer will be the first to break the 3-inning barrier?

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 7 October 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, a late inning comeback in the postseason by los Bravos! Perhaps the Astros' postseason ineptitude > the Braves' .

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 7 October 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, this series IS a clash of a couple of legendary choke teams.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 7 October 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

stay off the streets of atlanta tonight!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 7 October 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Houston never should have traded Geoff Blum.

I just don't understand bringing in Lidge in the 7th.

And Miceli can't give up 0-2 dingers. :-(

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Houston never should have traded Geoff Blum.

Doi?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhere in a frustrating alternate dimension, Smoltz is still standing on third base in the eighth inning while JD Drew waves at slider after slider in the dirt.

briania (briania), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It was common pre-Sutter to bring in your best reliever WHEN NEEDED, and regardless of the result being off this time I generally applaud it. Check the old Series boxscores for Fingers, Lyle, etc.

The Juice Box PA guy has GOT to play Hangin on the Telephone, 867-5309, etc during Atlanta's pre-Game 3 BP.

Justice doesn't bug me much; while he ladles out cliches with the best of them, he's quite restrained at giving stupid analysis. For an ESPN jock.

>when halle berry visited my base in italy on some uso jaunt my friend picked her up at the airport wearing a david justice jersey<

Proof that she's no worthy successor to showbiz divas of yore. Ethel Merman would've kicked your friend in the nuts.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 8 October 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Thompson pulled after 4 pitches... Atlanta showing a little bit of heart. 4-2 Astros, top of the 6th.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 9 October 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no voice.

boldbury (boldbury), Saturday, 9 October 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, crap. Biggio hits a pop-up with 2 men on that hits the roof in foul territory, Ortiz makes an amazing recovery to catch it, but it only counts as a strike. 2 pitches later, Biggio knocks it over the left field wall for 3 runs.

Houston in the catbird seat, with Roger on the mound.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 10 October 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Rocket's postseason WHIP has to be somewhere around 2... he's been very lucky so far.

mattbot (mattbot), Sunday, 10 October 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

LaRoche with a 3 run big fly way way out to tie it up... c'mon ATL!

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 10 October 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Egad, I just found myself agreeing with Morgan -- I'd walk Lane and make them take Lidge out. Moot point now, Lane dumps one into RF, PH for Lidge up.

mattbot (mattbot), Sunday, 10 October 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, why didn't Garner double-switch for Lidge?

Whoa, Smoltz gets away with loafing over to first.

mattbot (mattbot), Sunday, 10 October 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And the Braves push one across against the Lidgeless Astros in the 9th.

mattbot (mattbot), Sunday, 10 October 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never seen Giles open his batting stance up that far -- he's really pressing.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 10 October 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

WOOOOOOOO! Smoltz sez "It's Lima Time!"

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 10 October 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, great game! I've never seen so many beards facing each other in clutch situations, which warmed my heart. As did Kent making four of the final eight outs.

mattbot (mattbot), Sunday, 10 October 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

BRAVES!

Pissed that I missed the Braves' last 4 runs, but it's too nice out not to be outside today...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 10 October 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

My only beef with this game was that Garner should have had Berkman running on the first pitch to Kent. Atlanta might not have even thrown through to second with a speedy runner on third. I knew Kent would hit into a DP.

I didn't want a game 5. The two questions that concern me: How will Oswalt perform on short rest? Will Wright be as bad as he was in game 1?

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 11 October 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

holy moly it's coming back to atlanta! i'm going to the game tomorrow fer sure, crossing my fingers it'll maybe even be a night game - let's go bravos!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 11 October 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I almost feel sorry for Atlanta (erase '95 and they are the nu-Sox) until I remember that whole Leni Riefenstahl-cum-John Wayne choppy-choppy bullshitX0r

Astros-Cards would be gonzo bonkers.

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Monday, 11 October 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Astros-Cards would be gonzo bonkers.

A consolation prize for the red states, maybe.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Monday, 11 October 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

http://homepage.mac.com/habeeb102/.Pictures/oh_snap.gif

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 11 October 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

#%!#. The Braves are really freezing up with RISP this game; I doubt they can pull the rabbit out of the hat 2 days in a row.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

8-2...that's enough for me. Congrats to the Astros for their first-ever postseason series victory, and good luck against the Cards -- you're gonna need it.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Cards in 3.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys are underrating houston. they're tough as nails.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

They have 2.5 starters, two of which have just gone on three days' rest to secure this NLDS = it's gonna be a tough row to hoe for them Astros, unless the Cards' starters agree to suck.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't put any money on "Cards in 3".

This game is getting real ugly.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Failed attempt at humor... STL's so good they'll only need three in a best-of-seven... blah. Back to the drawing board.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

my bad, I thought you might be one of the Brits trying to get into baseball.

One storyline for Hou-Stl; Walker vs Beltran: battle of the big ticket mercenary bats.

Needless to say, Cards will really need to win game one before Oswalt and Clemens show up.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

And the NL (Comedy) Central is finally going to the big dance.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say Beltran is a shade better than Walker. Just a shade.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, the Braves can't catch a break, can they*? Is there some sort of "Curse of Hank Aaron" or something ("You traded me to the BREWERS? For DAVE MAY?! FUCK THAT")?

*yeah yeah '95, but they played against THE INDIANS.

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Best birthday gift I ever got! Woo-hoo!!!!!

I'm so glad that monkey is off the franchise's back and that the 'choker' label can finally come off of Biggio and Bagwell.

And about the pitching. Yeah, it's scary that we won't see Clemens and Oswalt till Games 3 and 4, but Backe has show no sign of being intimidated in the big games he's pitched recently. And according to my brother, we have a pretty good 4th starter by the name of Johnny Wholesquad. If the Astros can score 12 runs again, it won't matter who's pitching.

This is so sweet!

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That '95 Indians team was spectacular, they went 100-44 and were a better team on paper than the Braves.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

At least that drunk Furcal will be outta stir in time for Thanksgiving, yes?
