MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I had money down on game 1 and also money down on a sweep. I love my Dodger loving friends.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Suckaz!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Some relation of HAL 9000 responded to me (in the locked thread):

>Thread submit strings "WEAVER" and "LIMA" in relation with "THROW A GEM" defies universal logical constructs. <

I grant you that Weaver's high "quality start" total is a bit misleading, but there were a few 7- or 8-inning, one ER outings.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6200

The two Sept starts vs StL were 13 IP, 9 ER. Not encouraging, but we'll see...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

PUJOLS MASH BALL. DESTROY SCR3AM3R W3AV3R.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Who replaced bnw with a Dinobot?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm all for nuance and strategy and small-ball but this team is more about CRUSH EVRYONE!!!!!!!!!

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

GAME ON

Gephart is behind home plate

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 7 October 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i have it from my sister that jayson werth once watched the lion king at our house. (which somehow doesn't make that HR any easier to swallow)

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 7 October 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet he talked all the way through the movie.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

just for the record, i put on a cardinals shirt before this inning :)

bnw (bnw), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

John (jdahlem), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

that was brutal. bradley and furcal... what a great night for the league

bnw (bnw), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Buh bye screamerweaver. You may stop Rolen and Edmonds but you can't beat Iron Mike Matheny!

bnw (bnw), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

OOO-oooh DREEEEEAM WEAVER
I believe you can take me into the fifth inninnnnggggg

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

what'd I say? Murderer's row starts at the 8th spot.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 8 October 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Captain Obvious say: this St. Louis lineup have serious pop!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 8 October 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, Cal Eldred...Julian Tavarez...Wilson Alvarez. Good times, good times...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 8 October 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, right? Seeing Wilson up there on "the bump" ... surreal.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I had Mike North's "Me and Julian Down by the Bullpen" going through my head.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

mlb really needs to start fining la russa for this shit

John (jdahlem), Friday, 8 October 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Fox asked him for an extra commercial break. That, plus the in-game interviews he does = kickbaxxX0rs

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, what happened?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

eh, he brought in Steve Kline in relief with a 2 outs in the ninth, and a five run lead. For no discernable fucking reason at all, other than the fact the he's TLR.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

well Tavarez did seem to be slipping, but still a FIVE RUN LEAD, so yeah.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

you all are lame, it's the playoffs, no second chances here, he's the manager, who won the game, etc. what, you were late for an appointment or something? if anything bad happens it'd be all like 'I could tell Tavarez wasn't shit, wow another Grady Little / Dusty Baker" plus, MLB ain't gonna fine anyone for extra commercial time for the networx.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 8 October 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

whatever dude, chill.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

PRO TLR = TEH LAMORZ WTF

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, you must still not quite understand. it was a 5 run lead with 1 out to go in the ballgame and tavarez had retired the last 2 batters and 5 of 6 faced. it was a ridiculous move that i'm fully confident no other manager in baseball would've made but was utterly typical of la russa and therefore especially worthy of comment and criticism, if not extended debate.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

He wanted Kline to get some work? Or wanted him to pitch to a particular batter or batters in case he had to face them again at a more critical point later in the series?

Regardless -- the move was pure LaRussa, no doubt.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 8 October 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, Kline's status has been kind of iffy since his injuries, so I think it was mostly a test drive. TLR does overmanage the bullpen though, and it slooooooooooows down the game terribly. Marquis' early exit didn't help though.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I personally can not wait to see head cheerleader Jose LimaTIME get knocked out in the 2nd or 3rd... he has to be the most annoying person playing ball in the game.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Why the hell does Fox keep showing him on camera? Like we should give a shit about his reactions?

bnw (bnw), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

LIMA TIME

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha -- that's pretty funny, what that guy wrote.

I talked to Lima one time, when he was with the Tigers; we were in this patio party thing next to the visitors dugout. He talked about hitting on girls and taking nips from a bottle in the bullpen on his off-days (I am totally not joking -- he actually admitted this to us, a bunch of random strangers)

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Saturday, I'm going to do my job and die on the mound."

bnw (bnw), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"IV. Despair

This team is never going to win. They have had the best player in baseball history for the past four seasons, making the playoffs twice. They were seven outs away from a World Series championship, holding a five-run lead. It’s time to invite the Boston and Chicago teams over for a pity party. Put a pot of coffee on, because the White Sox are going to bore us with some story about how their dad never taught them how to shave, or something."

This is pretty funny.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 8 October 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

LIMA LOOKS GOOD THROUGH ONE, BITCHES!

dan (dan), Saturday, 9 October 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I would pay up to $5 to watch Lima pitch nine innings to Michael Tucker just to watch them gesticulate, fall down, cheer at each other, etc.

mattbot (mattbot), Saturday, 9 October 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

if I have to listen to McCarver analyze Morris anymore I might vomit

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 10 October 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

goddamnit, lima is such a bitch

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 10 October 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a feeling this is going to go 5

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 10 October 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Watching Lima with the smelling salts made me think of the "Candy Slice" sketch on SNL. "How bout a little tootski, babe!"

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 10 October 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

what did you all think of LIMA'S performance?

gygax--sorry about your sweep bet!

dan (dan), Sunday, 10 October 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

wow dan, your teams avoided a double sweep. you are "THE MAN".

if only i could be as psyched as you after going 1-5.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 10 October 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still a Lima fan dating back from his days in Houston. I'm really happy for the guy after his performance tonight. Say what you want about the dancing and pointing, but that was clutch pitching tonight.

boldbury (boldbury), Sunday, 10 October 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Good lord is Pujols something else to watch. 5-2 Cards...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 11 October 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

MASH BALL!!!!

bnw (bnw), Monday, 11 October 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i love listening to the announcers blather on about how valuable Suppan's hitting is. Meanwhile it took him like 3/4's the season to get his first hit this year.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 11 October 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

That stat about the 500 RBIs in 4 years with DiMaggio and Williams is mind-boggling. Pujols is unreal./

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Monday, 11 October 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Rob, how 'bout them Lions?

Still stoked about the Braves' improbable comeback win...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 11 October 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Cards win. I cannot wait for the NLCS matchup; I think the Cards will roll over whomever they face.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 11 October 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It was nice how the Dodgers came out to congratulate the Cards after the game. I can't recall ever seeing that after a team won a series.
We won't see that during the ALCS, that's for sure.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 11 October 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ya think?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 11 October 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey BBT -- I know, I'm psyched!!! I'm thinking playoffs!

Hey, did you run the marathon today??

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Monday, 11 October 2004 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

No marathon this year, for the second year in a row. I just don't have the time or energy to devote to the training...maybe sometime in the future. Supposedly it was a tough one today -- lots of strong headwinds, plus about 15-20 degrees warmer than it's been the past few years.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 11 October 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

That stat about the 500 RBIs in 4 years with DiMaggio and Williams is mind-boggling. Pujols is unreal.

Sure but "Pujols is 24" = my ass. He has the same hairline as Reggie Sanders.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 October 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

my grandpa was stark bald by 20.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 11 October 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm. Never thought about that one. But whatever, he came from single A out of nowhere to do what he's done. (are you worried that he might be better than Bonds or something, g!?)

That's cool, BBT. What a beautiful day it was. Did they set a record or something for participation this year? I thought I overheard someone saying that. My street Cullerton was right at mile #25. I left my house at hour 4, noon, and it was INSANE. Just waves and waves and waves of runners. I was trying to cross Michigan to go to the red line (to go to a bar to watch the Lions, natch), and I had to wait for about 15 minutes until there was any kind of seam for me to dart across. 'Nuff respect to tha runners....

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Monday, 11 October 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend of mine ran that today, her first ever. It sounded crazy over my Sprint PCS phone.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 11 October 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard they had 40,000 runners, which is 2500 more than the biggest field when I ran, and even that was a tight squeeze for the first 8-10 miles. I can't imagine they'll let the field get any bigger than that. Your place is in the last few miles of the race, so you probably had the bulk of the pack coming by your place at mid-day.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 11 October 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Former Giant/DBack Matt Williams was pretty much bald when he came up to the majors.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 11 October 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Reggie Sanders Postseason Experience

1995 NLCS - Cincinatti
2000 NLDS - Atlanta
2001 WS Champions - Arizona
2002 WS Runner up - San Francisco
2004 NLCS* - St. Louis (*at least)

Not bad luck for a journeyman.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Reggie Sanders and Edgar Renteria are the Zeligs of pro baseball.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Reggie Sanders is the black Steve Finley.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I was gonna say that's a total insult to Steve Finley who I thought was a much better hitter and fielder than Sanders, but I just checked the stats and they are really close. That said I'd still rather have Finley.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd rather have the Reggie Sanders w/ the oodles of potential & flashes of greatness that came up w/ the Reds. While I'm making riduculous requests, I'd also like to have an injury-free Eric Davis, Thurman Munson behind the plate, and a pitching rotation of JR Richard, Vida Blue, Don Gullet, Dwight Gooden, and Frank Tanana. And Mark Fidrych, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Will Davis play center? Because we need to make room for Griffey.

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Griffey's the DH; I'm not risking ANYTHING.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

oh oh oh! Bullpen: GREGG OLSON.

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

re Lima, bnw, don't you like SHOW BUSINESS??

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

He can preen all he wants on the golf course, sucka.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Reggie Sanders is the Nu-Lonnie Smith, who won three rings with the Phillies, Cards and Royals. Hopefully Sanders doesn't commit a baserunning error that may have cost his team a Series like Smith did with the Braves.
