ESPN just reporting that he suffered a fatal heart attack. Despite his years of steroid abuse and hard living, I am still blown away by the news. Very sad.

I was looking around for confirmation of Christopher Reeve's passing and I found this story instead! Very sad, although something of a non-shock.

Yeah its sad. But he was a hardcore user of pretty much everything. The man couldn't even produce his own testosterone anymore from all the steriods he took. Just a matter of time before his ticker gave out.

Feck! He was still playing ball what, four years ago?

Caminiti had the best arm of any 3b of players that I saw play. He had a cannon.

My memories of his playing days were somewhat sullied by his imitation of a cripple at the plate his last season...so many times he'd take these huge hacks and end up falling over due to his bum ankles. Ugh.

Holy shit indeed! I had no idea he had abused drugs so badly.

As a Padres fan, I loved this guy. It was obvious that he was battling with numerous things in his life, and he was battling at the time as a player with injuries. His huge success, at the time, seemed very heroic.

The revelation that he was using steroids obviously complicated your feelings about him in retrospect. But even in confessing, you had the sense of him as an honest and humble dude, and you had the sense that his legacy as a steroid user genuinely troubled him.

I can't tell you how much people loved the guy here. RIP, Ken.

Ken Caminiti - Back In The News

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I was working in the studio last night about 2:00AM when I heard the announcement on an ESPN Radio SportsCenter. Just sent chills all through me. He was always a popular player here in Houston and, while he didn't come into his own until he left the Astros, he was always absolutely thrilling to watch man the hot corner. Prayers to his family.

Oh, and posters here from the old "secret" Silencio Board may remember that my avatar was a Ken Caminiti head shot.
