Awesome. This matchup will be great.

nelly should sing the national anthem for the cards!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Wakefield starting game 1!!!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Cards x factor = Carpenter. I am not thinking about this tonight though!!!!!!

bnw (bnw), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

My roommate is a diehard Boston fan, and I've been a Cardinals fan since birth (grew up right outside St. Louis) so this is going to be a great series.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still a Carpenter fan from his days with the J's.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

there is no reason to think this won't be a fantastic series.

who are we (besides bnw) rooting for? i am torn.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i am rooting for the cardinals (a) for scott rolen; and (b) because they aren't the red sox.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

's gonna be a Dominican shootout!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 22 October 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm also a fan of Carpenter from his time with the Jays.
But I'm mainly cheering for the Sox because that was my pre-postseason prediction.

Six games.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 22 October 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I sort of like the fact that it's two teams that have been around and in the same cities since 1901. Last time that happened, if I'm not misreading, was 1976 (Cincinnati Reds vs. NY Yankees).

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 October 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, a classic matchup. I'm torn in this series because I really want to see the Bosox finally break through. On the other hand, I have such tremendous respect for what the Cardinals have done this year that I don't think I can root against them. Except that I don't really like TLR much, and I hate Julian Tavarez.

Sox in 7.

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 22 October 2004 06:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Ho-lee crap, that's a big thread. And I'm up way too late.

I've just realized how pro-Cardinal partisan Buck and McCarver are going to be. I am going to mute them and play LPs by the Modern Lovers instead.

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Friday, 22 October 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You have to figure that McCarver will probably pull a Ray Knight and bring up the 1967 series every fifteen minutes.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 22 October 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah McCarver will be on his high dumb fucking horse. This is the matchup I've wanted all along. Cards are the better team on paper, but lets see how the Sox hold up. Hell... St. Louis is my distant second favorite team.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 22 October 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Neil Diamond better make a Fenway appearance ... now is the time!!!

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 22 October 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I still "hate" the Cards from the '80s, and I want a bonfire of "1918" shirts. Plus I want the homefield "advantage" team to lose every WS as long as the All-Star Game gimmick lives.

Still, I like Edmonds, Pujols, Rolen. I won't be crushed by any outcome.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 22 October 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

rooting for the sox here, i spent an hour working two phones at once to try to get sox tickets yesterday. didn't happen. anyone know if any tickets will be going on sale for the games in st. louis? and does anyone have a couch upon which i can crash if i score said tix?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 22 October 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

My apologies to all those cheering for the Sox, but the curse™ is just too cool for me to want it to go away. It's one of the best things going in professional sports. Go Cards!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 22 October 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the curse is a device created by dan shaughnessey to send his daughters to college. until he wrote that rediculous book it didn't exist. no one in boston ever spoke of it until it was rammed down their throats in the '90's. f' the curse. in the words of curt schilling, "we got babe ruth's ghost a hooker and now everything’s cool".

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

As long as The Curse came up ... someone on the SABR list this summer maintained that the Babe being sold by Frazee to finance "No No Nanette" is utter bullshit. NNN wasn't staged til 1925, I think, and Broadway didn't have 4-5 years' pre-production back then.

I seem to recall some NY Times writer from '86 getting the blame for creating The Curse in a column.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I was under the impression that Shaugnessy was the culprit - he probably didn't invent the curse, but he sure as hell created The Nation. He wrote the bloody book, he touts the power & wrath & malaise of the Nation in every bloody column, and he won't hesitate to hop in front of a TV camera & offer the rest of the sports world a brief glimpse into the supposed beleagured, tortured, cynical life of a Boston Red Sox fan. Every time I see Danny Boy & his sad sack convertible fro on the screen, I'm torn between buying him a beer and hitting him with a Baseball Encyclopedia.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This is, on paper anyway--up and down both lineups and including fielding, pitching and general moxy, the best Series matchup since AT LEAST '95 and maybe all the way back to '91 (and I think it's probably better than both of those so we may really have to go back.) I can't believe this isn't going to go 7 games and be an absolute wing-ding of a series. I really can't pick and I have little to no rooting interest in either team, but I'm gonna say that the Cards are just a LITTLE more together (until the Sox REALLY win it all and despite the ALCS win, I still think of them as the Sox who blew Game 7 last year.) Also this is one of those years where the NL home field advantage is huge. Forcing Ortiz to play a position and potentially losing Millar. Ouch! So Cardinals in 7, but with absolutely zero confidence.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 October 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the nation has been around since the 80's, i'm not sure but i *think* he may have boosted it from "celtic nation" which is what celtics hall of famer (and former [current?]) color commentator tommy heinsohn would call the fans in every city who sat behind the c's bench wearing green. they were in every nba city. that was in the early '80's, not sure if bosox nation came before or after but i'm almost certain it's been around longer than the curse.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 22 October 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Forcing Ortiz to play a position and potentially losing Millar.

i wonder if it will be forcing ortiz to play a position and potentially losing nixon? probably not seeing as there's no southpaw in the cards rotation but if nixon continues to struggle who knows...

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 22 October 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Either way you are weakening either your right-side defense or your offense considerably.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 October 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

no doubt about that but i'd still rather take the chance that the good from papi's bat will outweigh the bad from his glove (this sentence was typed with crossed fingers).

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 22 October 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha wait I'm not suggesting benching Ortiz (that's crazy talk, he's their best offensive player.) I'm just saying that the this time being forced to play the DH as a position player is a pretty big deal.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Neat angle: the Cards (known as the Gashouse Gang in the 40s) going up against the modern-day Gashouse Gang. CREDIT ME IF YOU NIP THIS IDEA FOX SPORTS!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

That even has a '46 Series role-reversal aspect to it.

I'm sticking with my playoff prediction from a couple of weeks ago. Sox over Cards in 6.

the cardinals were always my second favorite team. willie mcgee is my favorite player of all time. and as a matter of principle, i root for the nl. but i live with a yankees fan and have therefore seen a lot more of the sox (and secretly rooted for them) than the cardinals. i steadfastly pulled for the sox in '86 (my parents were out of town so i had to watch games 6-7 at the house of a friend who was a mets fan). i don't like trl. i love the baseball fans of st louis. pujols is a fucking star, although i don't like the porn face he displays while batting. the only sox player i actively dislike is pedro (who increasingly looks like a witch!). i love larry walker. i don't know what to do.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 22 October 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm rootin' for the Sox. I think they'll win in 6, maybe 7.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Friday, 22 October 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I like both teams, so I'll be happy no matter what. But I do want Red Sox fans to stop whining about their fucking curse, so I'll guess I'm a Red Sox backer. Prediction: Cardinals in 7.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 22 October 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

the gashouse gang thing is ridiculous. and its going to be cards in 7.

this series has: a future-legends faceoff in pedro vs. pujols, primeval picturesque pinball park vs. corporate cookie-cutter colisseum (blessedly ablaze and bleeding with benevolence), neurosis (lowe) vs. psychosis (tavarez), swift, splashy centerfielders, adroit columbian shortstops, two of the dullest, most efficient closers in baseball, incapacitated aces, a knuckleballer starting game 1 and a scrapheap staff opposing him, hope: the malignant, and the benign; the non-confrontational, congenial captain vs. the arrogant, affrontive asshole, humble homespuns at the hotcorner, two heavyweights: one gritty, unconscious, left for dead but never ko'd, well-rounded, a patient, perfect swinging machine with the most devastating 1-2 punch on the planet to boot, in the finish, unyielding, unrelenting and unassailable; one suave, unpredictable, a drunken streetbrawler on the attack, spectacular yet coldly fundamental yet always precarious on the defense, a cooly confident head, legs that move with surprising quickness, and a torso made of solid steel; two journeymen second baseman, both of whom suck, and yet don't, history, tradition, and folklore: its repitition, its guardian, and its preservation, vs. its making, its assailant, and its destruction. (and that's just off the top of my head!)

John (jdahlem), Friday, 22 October 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

that was beautiful.

Omigod, that MLB allowed one of its most historic moments of this generation to double as a location for a Jimmy Fallon vehicle ... Beelzebud, worst whore ever. But the biggest surprise is that it's an adaptation of Nick Hornby's soccer-themed FEVER PITCH, and it's a Farrellys movie:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0332047/

They sure lucked out, I bet the script didn't originally end this way.

Unless Drew has tossed out her Stroke in favor of Fallon --who would? -- the confluence of events would suggest it was a movie shot. (Fallon plays a Bosox obsessive, they shot at regular-season games too.) Why else were they the only mindless celebs I saw on the field?

And what WAS the Yadier-Manny hen party about?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard Molina thought Manny was peaking at the pitch signs.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, man - I didn't notice it was DREW. Fuck, and I thought it was so sweet that Fallon managed to get on the field & make out with his wicked hawt girlfriend. Fuck a Hollywood.

I think the Yadier / Manny nonsense had something to do w/ supposed strike-zone squeezing by the umpire in favor of the Sox. Or maybe they were just trading hair tips. That was definitely strange, thought.

xpost - ahhhhh, that makes sense. But whatEVer.

If anyone wants to do the head/hair rub w/ me, gimme a buzz.

The always quotable Curt Schilling on Alex Rodriguez:

Curt Schilling says what he thinks, and what he said to sports talk radio listeners in Boston on Wednesday afternoon is that the Red Sox would not have been in the World Series if Alex Rodriguez was on the team.

"The biggest move, when all was said and done, was the non-move. I think if we get A-Rod, we don't get here [to the World Series]. I don't question that for a second," Schilling said on WEEI's "The Big Show."

As recounted in the Boston Globe, Schilling continued, "He's a Hall of Famer, sure. But after getting to know people who, A, play with him and, B, have played with him, I don't think it would have worked here. I think this clubhouse would have been a much different place, and I don't think it would have been better, given the personalities involved."

The proposed trade with the Rangers to obtain Rodriguez would have sent Manny Ramirez to Texas. Ramirez stayed in Boston and was named World Series MVP"

Schilling backs out of stumping for Bush. Is Kerry/Sox connection behind it?
John Depetro WRKO 680 AM Boston | Today | Brainhose

Posted on 10/29/2004 7:40:44 AM PDT by Brainhose

It is learned that Curt Schilling will not be stumping with the Prez today citing that he needs approval from his doctor before he can travel.
But lo' and behold he was at Disney World yesterday.
Seeing as the Majority of owners are HUGE Kerry supporters, (including Katie Cowlicks now ex-hubby) Is it possible that the Redsox Brass got to Curt?? He now states that it was wrong for him to say that on GMA. I'm guessing that his doctors note will suddenly appear in time for the "Parade" in Boston Saturday.

Yes. The demoCREEPs bullied and intimidated Curt Schilling into, essentially, recanting his endorsement. That's what the demoSCUMBAGs do.

If I were Curt Schilling, I would have told them to F' OFF! There is no clause in his contract that removes his freedom of speech.

Besides, Curt Schilling could sign with any team in MLB, so who cares what some mealy-mouthed liberal douche bag like John Henry thinks or says?

Red Sox first baseman Kevin Millar, joking around on FSN's "Best Damn Sports Show Period," said the team drank shots of Jack Daniels and Crown Royal to keep warm before Game 6 of the American League championship series against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Millar said that since they won that game, they continued taking shots before every game as they swept to their World Series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

"I'm glad we won in four games," Millar said, "because those Crown Royal shots and Jack Daniels shots started to kill me."
