All the chatter about that stoopid museum in Cooperstown, and no one cares Arizona hired Wally Backman?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I pity Wally for having to be involved with that organization.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

They can't get any worse.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know he was Minor League Mgr of the Year (Sporting News?).

OTOH, he says "I expect to win, not rebuild." I hope that's bravado, or AZ plans to spend $200 million.

"Backman's arrests, bankruptcy won't affect job status"

Good thing he didn't get hired by Notre Dame.

"Leyland withdraws from consideration for Mets job"

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylc=X3oDMTBpcDBuM2RlBF9TAzk1ODYxNzc3BHNlYwN0aA--?slug=ap-metsmanager&prov=ap&type=lgns

Doc, who do you want to see get the Mets job?

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I was for a Valentine Restoration -- since they're as hopeless as when he last took over -- but Willie Randolph is said to have it in the bag.

I'm a lot more worried about Minaya and his alleged fondness for "athleticism" (ie, 5-tool players like Billy Beane).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It's either five tools or 600 career HRs, take yr pick.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

But the Mets already have 25 tools! Ha ha!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

leyland to the phils?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ed wade is an idiot.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

mets hired randolph. they announced it tonight.

maura (maura), Thursday, 4 November 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Is anything still open? I like Leyland.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 4 November 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i believe all the vacancies have been filled...

mariners: mike hargrove
dbacks: wally backman
phillies: charlie manuel
mets: randolph

and both the jays and astros made their interim managers full managers.

maura (maura), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Leyland : starting pitchers :: blender : foodstuffs.

Dusty Baker is now indisputably the reigning Managerial Asshat of MLB. Where's the award for THAT?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

wait...wasn't hargrove given a front office job w/ the m's?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

If by "front office" you mean "dugout", then yeah. Dunno if he was given any other responsibilities, though.

well, forget about backman. the diamondbacks fired him.

maura (maura), Friday, 5 November 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

One step forward, 76482 steps back.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

That was quick.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that some sort of record?
Although if he never officially signed the contract then maybe he was never technically the manager at all.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

My question is: why are you (the Diamondbacks) hiring a manager (Melvin) that was instrumental (in a sense) in driving the Mariners straight into Puget Sound? Unless the Mevlin in question has a kinky fro & his name is really "Buzz Osborne", STOP DROP & SHUT UP GARAGIOLA!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

when the d-backs fired wally backman, they should have replaced him with tim teufel

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 6 November 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

twenty years pass...

honestly not sure i've ever seen a new manager hired on a one-year contract

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46689552/kurt-suzuki-thrilled-angels-manager-born-do-this

but i suppose that's what's to be expected with a garbage organization hiring its sixth manager in eight seasons, and hey at least he's a MAGA guy

mookieproof, Thursday, 23 October 2025 04:59 (two months ago)

it's been suggested that arte moreno simply didn't want to have to pay his manager during the inevitable lockout

lol

mookieproof, Friday, 24 October 2025 01:26 (two months ago)

Suzuki is from a rural town (pop 17k) in Maui, actually the same town as Shane Victorino. They went to rival high schools (pub vs. private) but were 3 years apart.

That said, some parts of rural Hawaii can be incredibly conservative/religious, moreso than you might imagine.

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Friday, 24 October 2025 22:30 (two months ago)

twins hire derek shelton, who had a .410 winning percentage over 5+ seasons with the pirates

i don't necessarily blame shelton for the abject failure of the pirates during his tenure . . . but also that's a pretty clear signal that twins fans should have no expectations whatsoever

no doubt he'll be replaced by a different former catcher in 2028

mookieproof, Thursday, 30 October 2025 02:51 (two months ago)

Blake Butera (33yo) to the Nationals

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 30 October 2025 16:43 (two months ago)

Millennial excellence

colonic interrogation (gyac), Thursday, 30 October 2025 16:43 (two months ago)

a true youth movement!

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 30 October 2025 16:43 (two months ago)

The oldest current National is Josh Bell (32yo) fwiw
