Come clean, Mystery Daters!

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 22 January 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I swore off the Mets post-Kazmir, but, right now, w/ one of my favorite ex-BoSox picking his curls in the dugout, & a super-sexxxxy CF in the ranks, AND a full season of David Wright in the wings, AND the possible return of Jose Reyes, AND ANNA F**KING BENSON - aw, I can't stay mad @ you, baby.

Vestigal love goes out to: the Dodgers (go D-Lo!); Cleveland (go K-Mill!); Texas (go sluggos!) (DON'T SIGN DELGADO!). "Ugly Sexy" award goes to: Seattle.

Despite (in spite of?) following the Giants, I'm a huge sucker for young teams.

I admire Billy Beane's caution to the wind unconventional/anti-conventional wisdom approach to GM. (As Michael Lewis put it, to be a fan of the As, you're not a fan of the players so much as the concept). I'm hoping for these guys to win 90-100 games this year and disprove all the naysayers ("It can't be done").

The Minnesota Twins seem to be a diametric opposite of the Giants, almost every guy on the field is under 30. Johan Santana won me over by dominating all but the first 5 weeks of the season.

The Texas Rangers infield is fantastic: Teixeira, Blalock and Mike Young... and getting rid of A-Rod (who showed his true colors in the 2004 ALCS) for Soriano made me a huge fan.

I fell for the Mets early last season and while little changed in terms of their lack of success, I admire their Boston-like approach of aiming towards the playoffs via marquee free agent big name adds.

Last season's bi-curiousity about the Dodgers (which I know is a big no-no) has officially ended. I wish Hee Seop well, but with the addition of mortal enemy Kent means instant foedom.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't generally root for anyone but the A's (and whoever is playing against the Yankees) but I gotta admit a grudging respect for the Twins (I just wish the A's were in that division) and the Marlins and I am going to root like the blazes for Doug Mientkiewicz wherever he ends up (keep that ball!)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, I forgot about the A's! Fuck the Dodgers, I'm moving to Oakland!

I'd dry hump the Twins on a regular basis if they were smarter about using their farm system to help their big-league club & made roster moves that didn't cockblock their prospects. Perhaps they know of my dry-humping proclivities & do shit like trade for Shannon Stewart to keep me off their legs. I really hope that's not the case.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's kind of impossible not to root for the A's these days, I think. They're totally like the "Lil Engine That Could" of baseball teams haha

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Just the Red Sox. I can't get myself to root for the Giants until Bonds retires/the rest of the team isn't collecting social security and I won't root for the Rangers until Tom Hicks is forced into bankruptcy and sells the franchise.

So I'm going to go to a bunch of Ft. Worth Cats home games.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 23 January 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

what the fuck dude. wagon motherfucking jumper.

you can forget about us getting together for that opium now.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 23 January 2005 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep moving through these phases with the Braves. In 1991, I remember telling my baseball friends that Atlanta had some good young players and that I was picking them to finish second that year. They thought I was nuts. So they became a winning team and I openly rooted for them that year.

In '92 I obv. rooted against them, was hoping for the rematch in '93 but whatever, in '94 they were the enemy of the Expos and I took pride in watching them get slapped around by the Spos all year. Then, I was happy to see them finally win in '95, hated the Yankees so I had to cheer for them by default in '96, and then they scarfed it every year after that and I laughed my ass off every time it happened.

Now, they're kind of like the A's ... every year, people say that their division is wide open, they've lost too many players, and can't possibly win the division this year. And every year, Leo Mazzone turns bums into pitchers and they win. Until somebody knocks them off, I've got to keep rooting for them to shut up the naysayers for another year.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

What Barry said. Who are the Braves broadcasters this year? So much shit happened at the end of last season I couldn't keep it all straight.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 23 January 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

a's since i was a kid but now more than ever. braves grudgingly over time (i really despised the bandwagon jumpers back in 91), listening to alot of games on the radio and going to a few every year will do that to you. + what barry said. this year they got hudson + the a's are coming to town = i'm psyched. crush without reason: detroit tigers.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 23 January 2005 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I can never root for the A's because they embarrassed the Giants in '89. Not even (m)Other Nature could stop them that year, which is where the Twinkies come in, even in spite of their booting their prospects in the nads. Cool unis + when I was a kid, Kirby and KENT HRBEK!!

Proposed (G-rated) nickname for the Mustached One: Jeff Can't.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Sunday, 23 January 2005 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Theres so much Dodgers hate in town its unbelievable. Im going to reserve judgment until a game has been played.

Juan, the Magic Don (jingleberries), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(m)Other Nature

You're totally in grad school.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 24 January 2005 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Besides, being a Phillies fan, I have lingering Reds and Royals crushes.
I should probably just go jump off a bridge now...

the leglo (the leglo), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

still my dreamy Brewers, budget sweeties; I plan to go to at least 10 games this year

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose I should embrace the Nats now, but the whole process has been such a fuckup that I may find it tough. Plus I love Montreal and feel that maybe it's wrong to root for them now. I like a lot of the O's players (Tejada, Surhoff, Matos) but so loathe Peter Angelos that I can't really pull for them (unless they're playing the Yanquis). I of course have an A's crush. But I think that my sympathies are largely the result of hatred of the other team than liking anyone particularly.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

orioles were my first love and breaking up is hard to do, though angelos is really testing my sympathies. i inherited phillies leanings from my old man, so going all out for the nats will be tough, but those kids got moxie!

i have grudging respect for the a's and not so grudging respect for the twins.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the bosox are my true love, i may have a couple of cocktails and feel the pangs of lonliness and flirt a bit with the cubs but deep down i know that the sox and i are soulmates.
