I'm guessing people are starting to really prep for their leagues now (I am), and so let's start a thread to talk about players. Word.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I'll start off by asking about three guys that interest me:

Lance Berkman
Barry Zito
Josh Beckett

How do yall see those three doing? Any word on Berkman's injury? Last I heard he was out until May or June...

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't bet a plugged nickel on any of them, personally.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

It's been so long since I've entered a fantasy league ... can somebody post some Essential Tips For Preparing For the Draft or link to a site with similar advice?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

TIPS:

1) Draft retired players
2) Draft NRIs
3) Don't bother with ace starting pitchers - they're too volatile; stick w/ rotation fillers and spot-starters for full rotational flexibility.
4) Always draft more than you need - why settle for 2 2B when you can have 14?
5) If you can't attend the draft, let someone that doesn't like you draft for you. If you're in a Yahoo! league, just sit back & let Yahoo!'s rankings lead you to victory!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Uninformed opinion, in order of interest:

1) Josh Beckett
2) Barry Zito
96) Lance Berkman

Don't talk to me about Lance Berkman, though - we have a "history".

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I might go w/ #3 as an actual stratagem! I had Curt Schilling last year, & got DONGED.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

here's the real question. by monday i have to submit my keepers for my head to head league. i get to keep five players, plus four players in my minor leagues. my choices are:

ramon hernandez (no)
mark teixera (yes)
placido polanco (no)
khalil greene (no but considering it)
hank blalock (yes)
bobby abreau (yes)
lance berkman (most likely no)
brian giles (no)
hideki matsui (considering it)
josh beckett (considering it)
francisco cordero (no)
josh fogg (no)
jeff francis (no but i like him)
brett tomko (no)
david wells (no)
jake westbrook (no)
barry zito (considering it)
craig a wilson (no)
jeremy reed (no)
shannon stewart (no)
kaz matsui (no)
doug davis (no)

the minor leaguers i am keeping are:

rich harden
bj upton
david wright
bobby madritsch

i could try to trade for renteria (he's definitely available), but other than that, these are my options. honestly, i'd like to just keep three players as none of the rest of them seem particularly keeper-worthy (and i was one of the best teams last year!), but i have no clue who to take. possibly skewing my view: berkman and zito are the only two players who have always been on my team, so i feel a bit of loyalty to them. but certainly if i let berkman go i'll try to draft him again -- maybe in the third or fourth round.

so, help pls!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I had Curt Schilling last year, & got DONGED.

I traded Manny for Big Unit before the season, and I rocked all of ILBB's collective glutes (except for one of yall).

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

I'd give Westbrook another look, actually - his peripherals were pretty good, weren't they? And it's not like the Indians will struggle w/ scoring runs.

& are those the only minor leaguers you have on your roster? I dunno about BM...

I would love to join a $$$$ league, if only to give myself something to REALLY cry about.

And, yeah, Schilling was great, but my other starters were dongtastic (literally - I think I lead in HRs Allowed by a wiiiide margin).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

westbrook did well, yeah, and i have looked more into him. but he also threw many many more innings last year than he had before, so i have my doubts. and secondly, i can easily nab him in a later round.

and yeah, i have no choice with bm. but i think he'll be a solid if mediocre starter. i'm not expecting much from him. my other minor leaguers are ace, though.

also, david, next time there's an opening in my league, i'll nominate you. you'd fit in well.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

All things even (& not considering types of injuries) (& trying to kill the last half-hour of the work day) (as if I didn't already kill 7.5 hours by ILXoring), I would put in my 4th slot these folks in the following odor of preFrance:

1) Josh Beckett
2) Jake Westbrook
3) Hideki Matsui
4) Khalil Greene

... & either let everyone else screw or plot to pick them up again in the draft.

Having Blalock & Wright = NICE! Hope you have a DH spot.

xpost - yeah, I was just thinking that JW would be a guy you can sneak through waivers & pick back up. He is a question mark, given his performance level last year, the amount of work he did, the bullpen (eeeesh), but I think he's a risk worth taking. I feel the same way about Greene, though - I don't know what he's projected to do, & I'm not sure that his performance right before he broke himself is indicative of what he WILL do, but I'd think there are comparable SS folks out there that it's not worth using a key slot on him (unless you have no one else better).

I guess what I'm saying is - go w/ Godzilla.

xxpost - thanks!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

to be honest i'd take matsui

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

HAHA, you guys rule ... OK it's ON, mofos.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

hey leeeeeeeeeeee, if i hadn't traded the unit for manny i would've been looking up from 20th place. i was smart enought to draft derek lowe AND trade for brett meyers. manny and papi carried me from the all-star break on, that trade was a win-win situation if ever there was one.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

oh, and i had westbrook as a midseason pickup, he only mildly counteracted the damage lowe did to me the first half of the year. i think i wound up benching all my starters and relied on holds and whip to try to make my pitching stats respectable.

i'm really going to miss this league this year.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

see, i just need to be a little more disciplined. i was asleep at the switch during the draft and ended up w/ fuck all save for mulder, schmidt & wilkerson. wilkerson & schmidt were pretty big and i unloaded mulder for johnny damon...and then i started getting move happy. silly.

always lots of good pitching pickups to be made on the waiver wires, though. weaver and carpenter really helped out quite a bit.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

last year in my other league i traded johnny damon for vernon wells, about a week before wells went on the DL for 6 weeks... ugh.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, there's always a guy or 10 to be had on the wire during the year - overlooked rookies & newbies breaking through (Bonderman / Westbrook), AWOL guys coming back from injury (Carpenter), out-of-nowhere minor-league lifers (Ryan Franklin), mid-rotational fodder going gonzo (Loaiza). And there's always the time-honored tradition of circling over the Available Player Roster all vulture-like waiting for the next Prior / Wood / A's prospect to get called up & finally clear Yahoo! waivers.

In my other now-defunct league ("defunct" = "exited stage left, w/ door hitting ass"), I grabbed Odalis Perez & Vincente Padilla off of waivers, back when that meant something. Of course, my roomy, not to be outdone, managed to snag both Zito AND Mulder way way back when they were rookies (and really good).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

so going by yalls' advice, i'm leaning toward: teixera, blalock, abreau, matsui and beckett. does that sound right?

who are the nominees for this year's loiza? he doesn't quite qualify, but i think vazquez will have a big year.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I've no doubt that JV will bounce back - it wasn't New York that messed him up, it was the lack of goatee! Also, I've read things about Mel S. being a hands-off type of pitching coach (which makes sense, since whenever a pitcher is having problems w/ mechanics or arm-slotting issues, they're sent down to Tampa to work w/ Billy Connors - like, um, isn't that supposed to be Mel's purview?). (Also - outside of Andy Pettite & Mariano from 17 years ago, what young pitchers has Mel actually helped develop?) If JV was hitting the skids, and was looking for help from Mel, I think he'd be SOL.

Would it be too much or too obvious for me to think that Wade Miller could sneak up on folks? I think Odalis might surprise folks that were obsessed w/ his shitty W/L record. Oh, wait, here's a really goofy one - DEREK LOWE. Sure, he had an awful WHIP & ERA the last 2 years, and has allowed an inordinate number of hits, and the Dodgers are playing Jeff Kent & Jose Hernandez in their IF, but, y'know, Chavez Ravine's a pitcher's park. (Who's the LA pitching coach?)

Not-so-shocking true story: I was in the crapper a few days ago, & heard some Sox / Yankee fans talking shop, and the Sox fan was worried that they wouldn't be able to overcome Derek Lowe's departure. I almost jumped out of the stall, trou dropped, and gave him the business.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

wade miller is a great candidate, and, unfortunately by now, odalis is the perennial breakout candy. but of course who had been that before him? mr. beltre! HE'S TOTALLY DUE THIS YEAR OMG OMG

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

who are the nominees for this year's loiza?

BRETT TOMKO.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

STOP THAT.

How's Jerome Williams doing, health wise? I have a lingering stat-crush on him after his 2K3 cup of coffee. Also - JESSE FOPPERT. Also also - JOEL PINEIRO?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

williams still seems solid, but isn't foppert offically floppert by now (sorry gygax)? and pineiro... what the fuck happened to him last year??

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Foppert had a mixed winter. He sat out most of 2004 recovering from Tommy John, but got to pitch 1 inning in 2004 (the last game of the season against the Dodgers, from my notes on the game):

1 gave up a bloop single to Jason Grabowski on a full count
2 struck out Tom Wilson on a full count
3 nearly gets Hee Seop Choi to ground into a double play (fielders choice, Choi safe at 1st by a step) on 1 pitch
4 strikes out Orlando Saenz on 5 pitches (AJ Pierzynski drops the 3rd strike and has to rifle it over to Feliz).

His winter league stats as mentioned above are mixed: 6.08 ERA for Manati in the PR League in 23.2 innings with a 23:8 K:BB ratio (which at one point was 19:1).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

"who are the nominees for this year's loiza?"

Jaret Wright
Carl Pavano-- Less likely than Wright, but still he has only been a good starter for a year and a half.

I'd like to get Matsui on my team as he is very consistent and plays every day. Godzilla has also improved both years in the USA, so if he is going to have a bust out season, this might be the year.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Pecota predicts Westbrook to have a 4.67 ERA.
Odalis -- 3.89
Miller -- 4.55
Lowe -- 4.01
Pavano -- 4.64
Wright -- 4.69
Williams -- 4.00

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

And their top ten pitchers:

Johnson Randy
Santana Johan
Schmidt Jason
Schilling Curt
Sheets Ben
Martinez Pedro
Oswalt Roy
Prior Mark
Zambrano Carlos
Clement Matt

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Schill & Clement! I love you PECOTA!

Jaret Wright is definitely in line to be this year's Loaiza, if you're talking about last year's Loaiza.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

they're predicting a MONSTER year for pedro, which shocks the shit outta me.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Not that I know the actual projections, but I guess PECOTA thinks that: free out against pitcher + no DH + 15 or more starts in Shea + a good chunk of games against the Nationals + Rick Peterson as pitching guru = yahtzee? (I would be beyond giddy if they actually came up w/ that equation.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

And their [PECOTA-ed.] top ten pitchers:

Johnson Randy
Santana Johan
Schmidt Jason
Schilling Curt
Sheets Ben
Martinez Pedro
Oswalt Roy
Prior Mark
Zambrano Carlos
Clement Matt

-- Jams Murphy (ystrickle...), February 9th, 2005 9:38 AM. (ystrickler)

Very interesting that PECOTA didn't include either of Oakland's former "TWO BEST PITCHERS IN BASEBALL OMG HOW COULD HE DO THIS TO US?!?!?!?!?!!" in their top 10 list, in spite of both going from the AL to NL.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 February 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

they had a fascinating breakdown of oaktown the other day, pointing out that with their moves -- taken in view of VORP -- the a's have actually picked up four wins this offseason. i'm really curious to see them play this year.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

being a boston native and a chicago resident, i wound up watching both clement and the bosox extensively last year and i really think he'll thrive with this club. though he still has some problems with consistancy, he was certainly better than silky-d was last year. and i liked what i saw in him even when he didn't have his shit together, he battled, unsuccesfully sometimes, but he never got that look on his face like he was absolutely without a clue that lowe had on a semi-regular basis.

but dear god i want derek lowe to have a fantastic year in l.a., he has been my favorite red sock of the past 5 years. i hope he wins the nl cy young, it will make me feel better about taking him too early in my fantasy drafts for the last 4 years.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 11 February 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

what can anyone tell me about joel guzman? the kids at bp were drooling over him yesterday. is he expected to make the bigs this year?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

"they had a fascinating breakdown of oaktown the other day, pointing out that with their moves -- taken in view of VORP -- the a's have actually picked up four wins this offseason. i'm really curious to see them play this year."

I'm really excited to start following A's games this year.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

so i'm naming my keepers tomorrow. they will be:

abreau
beckett
blalock
matsui
teixera

minors:
david wright
bj upton
bobby madritsch
rich harden

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

tell me again how exactly your "rookies" category works?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

It looks like "minors" = folks that spent at least a little time in the minors last year? (Was Harden actually sent down?)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

31 starts x 5 days of rest = 155 playing days across a 180 day long season seems like he wasn't.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

if a player was in the minors when he was drafted or picked up, a team can carry him over for a maximum of two seasons, provided that the fantasy owner never takes the player out of their minor league slot. thus you earn no points for what they do, but you get to hang onto them. harden must leave my minors by opening day this year.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

also, there are rules for "was in the minors." the player must have fewer than 50 career innings pitched or 100 at bats. or something like that.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

i am going to continue to talk to myself here, because i'm switching up my keepers. it looks like i'm gonna be trading beckett for zack greinke. greinke will take madritch's minor league slot, enabling me to keep another player. i'm actually leaning toward francisco cordero over zito and berkman, simply because i have a feeling zito and berkman will last a little while in my draft...

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeesh, I dunno - trading to Grienke seems more than OK (even if Beckett has a better chance @ wins, he's got the injury bug, and when Grienke was on, he was ON), but keeping a closer that's not Gagne or Foulke (that is, a proven guy on a team with a solid starting staff in front of him) seems kinda sketchy. There are so many one-hit wonder relievers out there that went gonzo one year & flame out the next, which is how I view the bullpen guys that surrounded Cordero last year, & I don't see where the Rangers are going to get any starting pitching this year (esp. with KR folding). That is, unless you think "pitching" equals "BP thrown like you mean it, man". I'd probably keep Greene if the Beckett / Grienke swap goes through.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

the grienke love is in part due to the PECOTA projections for him, which are monstrous.

as for cordero, i agree that saves are easy to come by. yet based on how my league does points, he ended up being the fourth overall pitcher last year, and his numbers are good: not a lot of walks, etc. and as danny kolb proved last year, the quality of the team you play for doesn't mean all that much when it comes to saves...

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh god Danny Kolb - didn't he strike out, like, 2 guys last year, and have a ridiculous amount of luck re: balls put in play? Dude's probably going to get donged around this year. (Also, I wonder how many of those saves were gotten piggybacking Sheets - I can't see his pen mates ably bridging the gap between 6 and 9 all that often.)

I loathe saves as a fantasy stat (aside from the usual SABR-fueled arguments), because it's the one place where I get the shaft (besides, y'know, FIELDING PERCENTAGE) - I either forget about drafting a closer until it's too late, or I draft a closer that gets hurt (HI EDDIE G!), and I end up having to rely on Rocky Biddle & my mom to GET ONE SAVE while some owner that hasn't checked his team since February has THIRTEEN save guys riding virtual pine & someone else decides to collect would-be closing candidates off the waiver-wire like they're Lladro statuettes.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Well I had my draft yesterday. I had the #6 pick. Here are my selections (the first nine players listed are the people I kept; first five are keepers, last four are minor leaguers):

K. Bobby Abreeu (OF)
K. Hideki Matsui (OF)
K. Josh Beckett (P)
K. Mark Teixiera (1B)
K. Hank Blalock (3B)
K. Rich Harden (P)
K. Bobby Madritsch (P)
K. David Wright (3B)
K. BJ Upton (SS)

And now the draft:

01 Adam Dunn (OF)
02 Javier Vazquez (P)
03 Francisco Cordero (P)
04 Khalil Greene (SS)
05 Bret Boone (2B)
06 Brandon Inge (C)
07 Larry Walker (OF)
08 Derek Lowe (P)
09 Chad Cordero (P)
10 Craig Wilson (1B/OF/3B)
11 Woody Williams (P)
12 Jeff Francis (P)
13 Wily Mo Pena (OF)
14 Dan Meyer (P)
15 Mike Adams (P)
16 Ian Stewart (3B)
17 Joel Guzman (SS)
18 Chris Capuano (P)

Guys I regret taking: Inge and Boone. But for their positions and considering the round, they were solid picks I thought. Worst pick: Kelvim Escobar went #9 overall.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Sunday, 20 March 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

And so my lineup most weeks will look like this:

C Inge
1B Teixiera
2B Boone
SS Greene
3B Blalock
CI Wilson
OF Abreu
OF Matsui
OF Dunn
DH Walker or Pena
P Beckett
P Harden
P Madritsch
P Vazquez
P Cordero
P Lowe
P Cordero
P Williams

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Sunday, 20 March 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

And it goes w/out saying, except I've forgotten to do this a few times - watch out for starting catchers whose team have a day game following a night game. Unless your backup sucks - then you're better off hoping your guy gets a late-game AB w/ guys on base, or comes in on a double-switch.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

if your guy's in the starting lineup, you'll see a line of zeroes next to their name on your Today's Lineup page (instead of the usual line of dashes).

OK, that's what I thought that meant, but I wasn't sure.
Hmmm ... so StatTracker is also responsible for putting the little accents next to a pitcher's name on the day he starts? I guess I'll have to start looking that stuff up myself?

I'll see how dependent I am on this stuff once ST is taken away, then maybe I'll pony up the $10 (pro: lotsa stats, con: lotsa stats, I'll never leave the computer!!)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

you get the little accents next to a pitcher's name even without stat tracker. that's standard issue.

the leglo (the leglo), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, StatTracker's only responsible for the up-to-date stats (both in the really crappy StatTracker popup, & on your Today's Lineup page). I know the pitcher karats are free, & I think the starting-today zeroes are free as well.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Hey Raposa, get yerself to the Comerica tix thread on ILE and get back to me...

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Young is a top-5 SS using fantasy stats, weak only in SB. Hampton is a lower-range fantasy pitcher and Zito is a complete wild card.

I'd require youth w/ upside if it's a keeper league (our friend Greinke) or a legit #1 or #2 starter for either Young or Renteria.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
Another question for my other league: I'm in 4th place overall, but SORELY in need of Wins. I recently picked up Derek Lowe and Jamie Moyer from waivers (dropped Randy Wolf and put David Wells on the DL), so that should help. But some dude just proposed a trade: Matt Clement for Derek Lowe. He says Clement's ERA and WHIP is too high for him, but Clement would give me more wins than Lowe would. I'm not totally sure he's right. As of now, Clement is 3-0, and Lowe is 2-2, but I don't see Clement racking up that many more than Lowe when all is said and done. Perhaps a couple more, since he has the Red Sox offense on his side. And even so, I'm not sure the burden of Clement's ERA and WHIP is worth taking on. So I think I'm gonna scotch this one. What do you guys think?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

You got Derek Lowe on waivers? How many teams are in this league.

I agree with you -- scotch the trade. Lowe is a bit unpredictable from year to year, but he plays in a pitchers park and he's giving up waaay fewer baserunners than he used to (incl. a much improved walk rate). Clement is the opposite, he's giving up way more baserunners than he typically does, and he plays in a hitters park.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

11 teams in the league -- yeah, I was surprised to see him there!

Yeah, that was my instinct, MIR, I just wanted some ILBB support.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

MIR OTM. & don't discount the pitcher / DH thing, either. More often than not, performance will out - it's not like the Dodgers aren't a good run-scoring team, either. Actually, I think they're leading the NL (if not MLB) in runs scored.

Even if you're getting lapped in wins, it's only one category - give me a guy like a Randy Johnson or a Ben Sheets from last year over some win-happy jerk like Russ Ortiz. The wins might not be there for RJ or BS, but the other areas they help you in (ERA, WHIP, Ks) more than make up for that deficiency.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Lowe is having an uncharacteristically good K:BB year, Clement is having an uncharacteristically bad K:BB year (over a total of six starts). The difference in hits given up is negligible (one every six innings), the major difference between them in counting stats is that Lowe threw one three-hit shutout and Clement got shelled once - other than those they've been equal (or Clement slightly ahead, even).

So, me, I'd take Clement. Better track record, higher-powered offense, likely to rebound from his walk troubles. You'd be selling high on Lowe (I don't expect four more three-hit shutouts) and buying low on Clement, usually a good strategy.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

hmmm, good point. i did think about whether their seasons to date were anomalous. too late, though. i already nixed the deal.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

actually, the only regret i have now is that clement would've helped me with K's, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I need to decide if I'm going to auction off John Patterson to the highest bidder or if he's the real thing.

Currently in 11th place out of 13 teams. Desperately in need of RBI, runs, saves and wins. (Garland was a late waiver pickup and has thus far yielded no bounty; ditto Patterson, but with one win counting so far.) Hee Seop has been coming around, but isn't exactly a lethal weapon at first.

(a follow-up, sort of, from my rant on Fantasy Thread #2)

ARI vs COL tonight. Brandon Webb (who doesn't have a great record in Coors, but pitched well and won in a game there earlier in the season) gets the start.

I've got three Rockies on my roster, and I'd like to play them all (FLA vs SD and Peavy tonight, so Mike Lowell's ass is gonna ride the pine for my team). Of course, starting three Rockies vs Webb seems like a zero-sum game for my team.

Obv. these sorts of situations aren't uncommon in fantasy baseball, so how do you guys strategize them? Is there a "general principle" to follow (i.e. "more often than not, side with the starting pitcher") or is each situation different and must be dealt with individually?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 14 May 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

My stance, as of right now, is to start everybody. Webb has pitched too well this year for me to seriously consider benching him, and Gonzalez could go 1-4 with a double and it'll likely be as good or better than Lowell will do against Peavy tonight.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 14 May 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

I would hesitate starting ANY pitcher at COL, and if I had any Rockies on my team I would start all of them at home because surely their performance at home would have been a massive factor in why I drafted them!

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 14 May 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

I don't mess with lineups on a game by game basis. I play who I'd normally play and let it ride (this matters less in my real leagues as transactions are week to week).

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 14 May 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Andruw Jones (mine) for Rich Harden (his)... am I stupid?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

He wanted Damon instead so I gave it to him.

My rotation will be:
Santana
Carpenter
Harden
Capuano
[Wood or Bedard: whoever comes off the DL first]

My outfield will be:
A. Jones
M. Cameron
R. Sanders
with V. Wells in reserve

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

I would've kept Damon, actually - more runs scored, better average, better OBP. Also, he's dreamy.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

He's been hurt a few times this year... I have this feeling he's about to get a visit from the DL faerie.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

last year in my other league i traded johnny damon for vernon wells, about a week before wells went on the DL for 6 weeks... ugh.

It's a sign!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Okay, should I start Chris Capuano at Wrigley today? I'm thinking no.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

bump!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Okay I'm pulling him unless someone can convince me otherwise in the next few.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Since I traded Andruw Jones partly for Keith Foulke, Andruw Jones has hit like 50 home runs and both of Keith Foulke's arms fell off.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

In my other league, I have too many starting pitchers. I'm already 7.2 IP over my projected limit, and I have four starters going tonight -- Chris Carpenter, Hiroki Kuroda, Derek Lowe and Mike Pelfrey. Should I sit one of them? Do you guys generally hit your IP limit early and hope for the best in the last few weeks of the season, or do you try to pace yourself?

Grisly Addams (WmC), Friday, 7 May 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

I don't really pay attention to innings at all. It doesn't matter when you get your innings. The trick is to get the highest quality innings you can get, so if you believe all those guys will play well, you might as well play them. Who knows: you might get hit by injuries, and have to fill innings with chumps from the free agent pool.

That said, Lowe hasn't looked too hot this year.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Friday, 7 May 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

yea id say just go hard w/ guys & matchups ur confident in

johnny crunch, Friday, 7 May 2010 21:54 (fifteen years ago)

aaagh

Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 8 May 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

dude, lemme give you some advice: do NOT start an avg-to-lousy pitcher against the best offense in the NL (MLB?) in their bandbox of a stadium... for future reference, of course.

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 8 May 2010 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

... in your *other* leagues.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 8 May 2010 01:20 (fifteen years ago)

funnily enough i have lowe in the ilx league and i didn't sit him

ciderpress, Saturday, 8 May 2010 01:22 (fifteen years ago)

ok, more advice for my other league. I need a shortstop. Another team really wants Prince Fielder from my team and is offering Lance Berkman + my choice of Alex Gonzales or R. Furcal for Fielder. This sounds like something I should jump at. But maybe I want to hold out for Berkman + Jimmy Rollins for Fielder...? They want Fielder because they're Brewers fans -- sentiment always makes people overpay for something right? What would be my best deal here?

Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 13 May 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

Don't think you'll be able to get Berkman + Rollins for Fielder. I'd be tempted to see if I can find a shortstop on the wire. Did you try to claim Castro?

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Thursday, 13 May 2010 22:40 (fifteen years ago)

Castro's available -- is he really all that?

Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 13 May 2010 22:45 (fifteen years ago)

he'll prob be equal in value to furcal, better than alex g & slightly worse than rollins, altho arguably not

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 13 May 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know if he's all that, but he's free, and so far he's been pretty good.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Friday, 14 May 2010 05:01 (fifteen years ago)

Picked him up -- pretty sure he'll outdo Cliff Pennington.

Also got James Loney, who was just sitting there available! So if the other team is willing to do Prince for Rollins straight-up, I think it'll be a pretty good net gain.

This other league is kinda O_O, but fun because there's only 10 teams.
