March 1...im about ready to bust a nut in my jockeys for this. Manny on the cover. I wonder how much better it will be from last years...which was pretty damn good.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 10 February 2005 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope they fixed the franchise mode. That's all I ask - EA's interface with a decent franchise mode. The gameplay last year really couldn't get much better, but the player progression/drafting system was horrible. Garrett Anderson picks up 14 speed at the age of 31 - guess he got the good BALCO shit.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 10 February 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha... I hope they fixed that lefty power glitch too.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah seriously, i won't be lining up for this one until i find out if it's actually, y'know, PLAYABLE.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 11 February 2005 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the lefty power glitch was awful. ortiz had 2 hr's all year for my sox franchise. and batted about .220

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 11 February 2005 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ortiz, actually, was the one lefty i could get to jack a ball with some regularity. the trick was to try to go the other way on any fastball from the middle out. with fenway being short down the line in left i got a ton of cheapies out of it. but way more 320 foot flies that went to left center.

Hands-on view of the franchise system (or at least one season). The ballpark editor might be cool (but could be cooler, let me recreate the Baker Bowl dammit), but I'm disappointed they created different budget strata again. Baseball should be governed by your income.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 12 February 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

other pet peeve they should fix - closers whining about their innings. Dude, you're not getting four innings every other game, that's why I signed you to 'closer.'

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 12 February 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps this power glitch had something to do with my juan encarnacion hitting 42 homeruns by the all star break and sean green with 2.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Monday, 14 February 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

jesus christ ign has some bad writers

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Power glitch with me: Craig Wilson 102 HR, Jason Kendall, 93 HR.

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

coming a week early, 2/22

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 20 February 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

lies. it comes out 2-23 officially, i went down and reserved my copy today. i hate when they do that shit. get me all fired up and just let me down.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the commercial last night on TV, it looks pretty great.

the guys who work at the video game store are the greatest nerds of all time.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

dammit, I've been looking forward to this, I'm tired of playing Madden now. I'll have to hit up all the game stores in town until I find one who'll sell before the embargo date

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the video page has some nice updates:

oh and the best news is its only $29.99

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Wonderful improvements. Actual player celebrations when hitting homeruns and no more lefty power glitch. Big Papi taking them DEEP!

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

IT'S OUT?!?!?!?!?!?!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I only have two problems thus far - the owner mode draft needs to list player attributes in a row, so you can sort by them - go to first basemen, sort by power against lefties, etc. The AI for letting the computer adjust rotations and lineups still sucks ass - you either let the computer move everyone around or have to go through four lineups for each team.

Joe Torre is my Red Sox manager. I feel dirty.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the computer roster fixes are AWFUL. it's such a fucking pain in the ass.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I know!!!

In the 2004 game, I'd always have like Jason Bay, Josh Phelps, or Scott Podsednik as my catcher and then the autofix would send them down to AA and try to replace them with some 19 year old catcher.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

okay i just ordered it for $29.99 (and free shipping!!!):

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I think my team is going to suck for a couple of years:
my standard lineup:
C - Toby Hall/Todd Greene
1B - Craig Wilson/Josh Phelps
2B - Bobby Hill (I still have no idea who he is - a no-hit Pirate by the looks?)
3B - Scott "Plays The White Way" Rolen
SS - Khalil Greene
LF - Carl Crawford
RF - Alexis Rios
CF - Lance Berkman
DH - David DeJesus

Destined to finish last in home runs. But not too speedy either.

Rotation: Jake Peavy, Mark Prior, Bruce Chen, Jorge Sosa, Aaron Heilmann
Closer: Troy Percival

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 25 February 2005 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently this is the last year for it too as EA has sold the rights.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 25 February 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry MLB sold the rights to Take-Two who I think make ESPN's games. UGH.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

So how do you guys navigate your dynasty mode? Do you actually play any of the games in real time/sim mode? Do you skip ahead a week at a time? Im trying to figure out a good way to go through a season with playing a couple of games but not having my team suck and miss alot of emails, etc.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

I go a week at a time, check e-mails, etc. Most of the e-mails are useless, backups bitching about PT, closers bitching about PT, advisors telling you about people you can't trade for, etc.

Further complaints:
I don't like the way contracts are done at the start. Too many 1 yr/$300k salaries, when you should control the rights to some of these people (Teixeria, for one) for a few more years. The game needs arbitration and more sensible negotiating models.

I mostly simmed through one Red Sox season in owner mode and had Manny drop 14 points in contact even though he hit .310, so I'm not completely convinced about EA having fixed their progression model.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

do they use PECOTA?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Still the same random progression bullshit.

I played/simmed through a year with the Sox, trading for Teixeira and Berkman (for Ramirez, Ortiz, "Friese"/Millar among others, some 'cheating' might have been involved here, but it was the only way I could figure out to stay above water in owner mode), they both had monster seasons, 40+ HRs good OPS numbers, etc.. Sim/play through the next spring training where they're both good (the two I'm paying most attention to) and save it after the last game.

Then I run the "advance to next season" thing three different times and the progression numbers are different each time and vary wildly - once Teixeira gains +10 power and hitting against lefties, the next time he goes -5 in contact and stays the same in power.

Berkman, despite a career year, being relatively close to his prime, and a good spring training never comes close to staying even. One time he loses 14/8 power lefty and righty and 5/7 contact, another he gains five power against righties, stays even on contact and drops about 10 contact and hitting against lefties.

This is so annoying. I only like to play franchise/dynasty modes and when I have no way of telling when I should re-sign someone or care that someone's having a good year - when performance is irrelevant - franchise play is useless. Playing Out of the Park and similar aren't much fun either, since I can't go in and play a game at Fenway when I want to.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 6 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

what do you think of the tunes? can someone who's more up on indie/alt rock than me fill me in on this stuff? there's kind of a Brix-era Fall-esque song on there which caught me off guard...

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

the tunes are balls. and there are only like 6 of them! wtf!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

the music on there is kinda interesting tho.. sorta surprisingly indie.. like hot hot heat, trail of dead and the bravery. granted I hate most of it, but interesting nevertheless.

ps: I want to kill myself when I have to hear that goddamn dropkick murhphys song.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

in another ea title (i know it was from the nhl franchise, i'm thinking nhl 2k2 or 2k1) they had a "ditty importer" where you could import your own mp3's. i wish to holy hell madden and mvp would dust off this technology. a little tessie goes a long way.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

The first thing I did was turn off the music, I got a blast of Tessie and that's all I could take.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

I'VE HAD ENOUGH TESSIE TO LAST ME A LIFETIME.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

i've played every bosox game up 'til april 26th, i went through a stretch where i lost manny, damon, and reteria at the same time. started off smoking out of the gate, then the injuries caught up to me. not sure what my record is right now, all i know is that trot nixon has 9 fucking homeruns before may.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I've gone a couple weeks past the allstar break with the Dodgers. No big surprises.. my bullpen is #2 in the league, I hit like fucking garbage. JD Drew is batting .265 but has hit a fair amount of homers. Jeff Kent is around .280 with similar HRs to Drew, made the all-star team, etc with Odalis and Gagne. Hee-Sop Choi is kicking some ass too, but my defense sucks. And Im still constantly behind the Giants in the NL West.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

my hitting has cooled off as well, a month into the season i think manny is leading the team in hitting (though he missed two weeks with a ribcage injury), ortiz is around .320, no one walks unless it's intentional. i have the patience of a meth-freak in the middle of a three day binge. the bosox still have minky at first base, he is a fucking vacuum, such an upgrade over millar. bellhorn and reteria pull millar off the bag once every 10 innings or so, minky always makes the out.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

in my game the sox were trying to trade off everyone they could. I picked up the catcher.. whats his name.. I dunno. Either way he totally hates being on my team. Fuck him tho..

The trade deadline is coming up and Im still trying to find out a way to pick up Zito from Oakland, but they dont want anything Im offering.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

The announcing sucks so much ass. The color guy keeps talking about the threat of a sac bunt... when no one is on base. WTF? Also, please give the color guy more than ten comments. Please.

The flaws wouldn't be as noticeable if EA didn't produce Madden, which has a near-perfect franchise mode (for arcadey fun) and announcing that really only gets repetitious if you play a lot.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

i think Renteria has made 35 errors already and im in april.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

The announcing sucks so much ass. The color guy keeps talking about the threat of a sac bunt... when no one is on base.

That's the new Tim McCarver meme! "In this situation, a sac bunt is as good as a 3-base error."

adam (adam), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

the Rick Ankiel memorial complaint: when I want to hit someone, I like to throw a fastball directly at their head. The video shows it hitting the batter's nose or the forehad of his batting helmet but no one is ever hurt. WTF? The guy should at least need to leave the game.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

"He Hit Me On The Helmet Flap With The High Cheese (& It Felt Like A Knuckleball Off My Tush)"

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I was playing MVP 2004 last week and wanted to see what happened if all my pitchers got tossed for throwing beanballs. The answer is that the last pitcher can bean as many people as he wants. Which sucks, I really wanted to get Wade Boggs some IP.

And yeah, it would be better and more if-it's-in-the-game,-it's-in-the-game-y if the consequences for beaning someone were more severe for both the pitcher and batter.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

I would love to see Wade Boggs throw a Chickenball (which would be like a hard eephus) (or a Weaver croquette).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

(Weaver chicken, not taco Jeff)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

after toying around with fantasy drafts and whatnot, tonight i'm gonna start a franchise with the mets. i'm psyched.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

it would be awesome if you could throw a true eephus.

also, in general, I wish that ALL EA titles had a 'kill' button. Where you could basically commit a flagrant foul with intent to injure. Ramifications to be sure, but seriously, hitting Kevin Millar or Kaz in the headpiece or spearing Jeff Garcia or sucker-punching someone like Bertuzzi and wipe out a player's career/season would be awesome.

Jimmy Mod Has Returned With Spices And Silks (ModJ), Thursday, 10 March 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

in madden you used to be able to hit after the whistle, there were many a stoned night where that tactic was the last refuge of someone whose fast-twitch reactions had abandoned them. it used to piss my buddy jon off to no ends when i'd start falling behind then just fucking drill bledsoe and make him try to beat me with scott zolak.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 10 March 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

One of EA's NHL games let you lay out the ref (and I think you could in Madden at one point).

Sports games + Grand Theft Auto = heaven. (I think Bill Simmons actually floated that idea in one of his columns. Ewww.)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

I was out sick yesterday and played about 20 games in a row. Had a nice bench clearer when I beaned Jetes with a Schilling 97mph heater. Schilling suspended for 6, Francona tossed out of the game.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

I was never any good at sports video games, but I'm living vicariously through you all.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

I just got this last night and my Brewers with Sheets on the mound promptly lost 11-2 to the Cardinals, with Reggie Sanders hitting for the cycle and stealing two bases. I have NO experience with sports video games at all, except beating my brother on Madden in October.

I started a franchise but am having a hard time figuring out how to do all that crap. That's what 1 a.m. was invented for, I guess.

Any cheats, tips, etc?

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

trade for david wright immediately. that is all.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

seriously, i hit more homers with him than anyone else. against a righty, any high fastball is gone, guaratneed. and as for playing, turn on the pitch coloring thing. i forget what it's called. but it's helpful.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

"The Batters Eye". This game is near impossible to hit on all star mode.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

I started my dynasty mode last night. Fantasy draft got me Pujols, D. Wright, C. Figgins, A. Dunn, W. Pena (5 jacks so far in 2 weeks), A.J. Burnett and the somehow AWFUL J. Beckett, and others. It's fun but I am not able to actually play the games, because I SUCK. I do "Manage" mode and then I get the thrills without the Zach Greinke giving up 10 runs in the first inning blues.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

IM 56-17 AS THE SOX. RELEASED BELLHORNY AND CALLED UP MY TOP PROSPECT MATT DERKSEN. WHO'S BRILLIANT.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I suck really hard at the hitting (it seems like there's almost no rhyme or reason to where a pitch will end up plus I'm impatient), so I play on one level up from rookie with the sliders adjusted to give me a 50/50 chance or a little better.

I'm not playing to get super-skilled at video baseball (given my history with games, never gonna happen), so I don't care if I suck when I play other people.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

hmm, revenge of the Xbox.

Someone on the White Sox just homered off of my staff ace Jake Westbrook, so I plunked Frank Thomas and actually injured him. The next two batters up proceed to hit crazy doubles, one that looks like it landed right in my glove but mysteriously went right through and wasn't judged an error. Upside - it is possible to hurt people by throwing at them (with the analog/trigger combo). Downside - the computer immediately punishes you.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Chone Figgins continues his reign of terror, with eight home runs now in 17 games. Wily Mo got robbed last night at the wall by some Spiderman mofo whose name I have expunged. And it's looking better for Victor Santos than his actual pitching will be.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 25 March 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

rocco baldelli is THE WORST with the home-run robbing. he's done it to me at least four or five times already.

the lineup of my rangers fantasy team:

C-Joe Mauer
1B-Pujols
2B-Figgens
SS-Upton
3B-Wright
LF-Crawford
CF-Berkman
RF-Ford
DH-Quinlin

Bench: Bellhorn, Mench, several prospects who turned into studs, Torreabla

SP: Sheets
SP: Harden
SP: Beckett
SP: Kennedy
SP: Bonderman

Long relief: Kip Wells, Tony Armas
Set up: Bradford, Williamson, Lance Carter
Closer: Brazelton (converted him)

Right now the team is 87-13. I simulate 3/4ths of my games. Sheets right now is 20-0 with a 1.23 ERA, and Harden is 19-1 with a 1.65 ERA. Yeah, we're pretty good.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 25 March 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

players that are better than their ratings suggest: quinlin, bellhorn and scott williamson.

player that can hit doubles like a mofo: mauer.

players that can homer at will: pujols, wright.

player that can always draw a double play: bradford.

player that always seems to get shellacked despite his ratings: beckett. avoid him!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 25 March 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

also at this point the team has won 28 straight games, crawford has 28 home runs and 68 stolen bases, and quinlin is hitting .380. i believe the word is oy!

oh, and the one prospect to get: jacinto. he's in the rangers minor leagues. dude can MASH, is fast as shit and, as the announcers like to say, "can throw strikes to the plate from center field." NOBODY runs on him.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 25 March 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Prospects are too demanding about their placement. I had a double-A junkballer with three pitches in the mid-70s demand an MLB contract.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I give them a shot and if they fail, I send them down (ALL the way down if need be). There's nothing wrong with being a nice GM.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I started owner mode with the default roster Yanks, traded Giambi for Shea Hillenbrand (fair trades were on, can't believe they went for it), released Bernie and created Shaun McCormack, The Best Player the Game Has Ever Known, to patrol center. I hit .313 with 51 HR and 143 RBI in my first major league season, winning AL MVP and ROY honors at age 17. I also traded Mussina for A.J. Burnett, who won the Cy Young. We won 101 games in the regular season and went 11-0 in the playoffs and world series. Unit retired at the end of the season and I let alot of guys walk but picked up Tim Hudson. Tanyon Sturtze is my 5th starter, unfortunately.

My minor league system is overrun by guys named Smallenberg. There are 4 of them in Columbus and a few mor spread around.

I let Rivera walk too, he wanted a 4 year contract at $10.5 million per. I brought the payroll down to around $150 million for 2006, but we're still running huge deficits. Anyone figure out how to make money so you can upgrade your stadium?

I've had the game for a month arleady and just started owner mode this week because I got addicted to playing games online.

Shaun (shaun), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I only get scored on by homers! It's so annoying. Pitch great for the whole game bar a couple pitches and still lose often on all-star mode. I figured the only way I can hit decently on all-star is to expect EVERY pitch to be a ball. Have the attitude of "you better not pitch in the zone, bitch!", then when they do smack that shit. 100% defensive hitting.
I play as the Cubs and traded Sammy straight up for Trot Nixon. Best trade ever. Got rid of Nomar at the beginning of the second year cause he wasn't doing shit for me and I knew his ratings would drop heavily after spring training. Now I have Corey Patterson, Carl Crawford, and Trot Nixon in the outfield and gun down runners at home with much frequency.

Annoying aspects of the game:
-half second delay on getting fielder to move when camera switches to fielding view. penalizes human player cause cpu doesn't have same delay
-control of fielders is too touchy. impossible to get them to move just a wee bit. what's the point of analog if it's all or nothing like this?
-as others have said, the commentary is repetitive and oftentimes just wrong ("this is a perfect time to lay down a bunt" when a slugger is up with no men on)

do you guys know about the trick to get all the legends without having to accumulate a gazillion points? you can buy one player, move him from free agents pool onto a team, save roster, but don't save your profile. then reload your profile (so it has the points you had before buying that player), and repeat.

()ops (()()ps), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

oh, another annoying thing, related to me getting homered on:
cpu seems to be able to get good wood on balls far out of the strikezone, whereas I wiff or pop up. most of the homers i give up come when i'm trying to get the batter to swing at a ball that's nearly in the dirt.

()ops (()()ps), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

Owner mode is a pain in the ass. I had to cut a ton of payroll, then micro-manage everything and whenever I had extra cash, build new seats or concessions. It stopped being fun when I had to worry more about jacking up prices for Yanqui weekend than managing the team. Dynasty mode is where it's at.

I'm getting really tired of the computer re-arranging my rosters and signing free agents (even though I've got players at every position) between the off-season and spring training.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
I did a fantasy draft awhile ago.. its pretty fun, but I cant figure out how to make my players not irate about their shit contracts they start out with. I tried to placate my MLB team, but that took up a bunch of cash. Now the minor leaguers are all pissed, except for like the 10% of them that are happy making 100k/year.
