Anyone care to speculate on any moves/trades?

I know the Giants are playing low-ball with talk of lowering salary expenses but have expressed interest in Vladimir Guerrero, Gary Sheffield and Derek Lee.

Manny put on waivers, Millwood to the Yanquis, does A-Rod want out of Tejas?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Tx wants to unload that ungodly contract probably more than A-Rod wants to leave. I would be very suprised if anyone trades for him, no matter how good A-Rod is as a player that contract is out of whack. You could buy the best bullpen in baseball for that kind of money and probably get more wins doing such.

Manny is the same situation with the added addition that he is a pain in the ass and isn't that good with the glove.

There is a good "small ball" lead off tandum in the free agent pool that could probably be gotten for reasonable money which might be a good fit for a couple teams with Kenny Lofton and Luis Castillo.

There was a writer in a column on ESPN's Page 2 that had a pretty reasonable scenario for making the NYY even more hateable. After what Schilling did to the Yanks, I don't know if they would want him, but then again they signed Clemens.

top 50 free agents and predictions

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The A-Rod to Red Sox trade intrigues me, but its got to be complete bullshit. Unless they move Manny, Nomar and Pedro. How much do I want Vlad the impaler on the red sox? I would give my left nut.

Chris Hungus (Chris V), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

After checking out that top 50 list, I must say I wouldn't argue if Ivan Rodriquez ended up a Cub, but Urbina would be a bit too scary to have as a closer.

earlnash, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a little skeptical of that top 50 predictions because look at the frequency of teams in the predictor column:

NYY - 5
CHC - 5
STL - 3
LOS - 3

everyone else either 2 or 1. Seems way to biased toward the media centers: NY and CHI.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, Sabean is giving away pitchers like there's no tomorrow:

GIANTS ACQUIRE PIERZYNSKI FROM MINNESOTA
The Giants added an All-Star catcher to their roster Friday,
acquiring A.J. Pierzynski from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for
right-hander Joe Nathan, as well as minor leaguers Boof Bonser
and Francisco Liriano. Pierzynski, a left-handed hitter, batted
.312 with 11 homers and 74 RBIs in 137 games last season for
Minnesota.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Not Boof!

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

And what happened to Yorvit Catche of Tomorrow?

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

waiting for boof deciphers it as dealing yorvit to milwaukee as part of the sexson deal.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Benito Santiago on the Pierzynski trade (scroll down):

"I made that team and I made those guys."

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Was Santiago really a problem? He is getting older and you never know if this is going to be the year it all breaks down, but it seems that the Giants need a bat to replace Kent.

I don't understand the Red Sox interest in going after someone like A-Rod, when they need a starter and could use another couple of arms in the bullpen.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 November 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Without speculating into clubhouse goings on, Benito wasn't a disruptive guy, but saying stuff like he was playing for free practically (while making a cool mil per annum) def didn't endear him to press and fandom. His numbers were down last year, and since he wants a medium-term contract, no one was surprised (except, apparently, Benito) that the the team didn't make an effort to re-sign him.

Leee Majors (Leee), Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

How good are all of these pitchers SF giving up?

I wouldn't be suprised if Santiago ends up in Chicago, as paired with Miller that would be a solid platoon with very good defense. He seemed to get along well with Dusty.

Benito isn't going to get anything but a one year deal at his age.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

giants went after ray durham and edgardo alfonzo to replace kent's offense #s... (a blind man could replace his glovework). plus rich aurilia was healthy and he put up incredible #s 2 seasons ago. they didn't think that kent was worth the price.

SF has traded away/let go of like 12 pitchers in the past season and a half... some were top 10 pitchers in the majors last year (livan, russ ortiz) others were some of the highest ranked prospects in the majors (ainsworth).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh...I don't think Kent was worth paying the big cash, but they need someone that can put a bit of scare around Bonds.

Derek Lee might not be too bad a pickup, especially since he is really good with the glove. I don't think he will be much better as a hitter as he is now.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Kent needs to shave, that stashe makes him look smarmy.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Edgardo Alphonzo is hard to figure. He is like Chuck Knoblauch and Carlos Baerga, all of them are 2b that used to be able to hit a ton and now pretty fell apart.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

...and pretty much fell apart.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Kent can't shave the stache, it's vintage 80s pr0nn0.

Leee Majors (Leee), Thursday, 20 November 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Or do you think that's spread accross 2 years?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Sheffield working for the NYY & The Boss is either going to be a match made in heaven or hell. I'd bet on the latter, especially if they slip next year, which unless they get some pitching could happen.

earlnash, Friday, 21 November 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

With Sheff the only marquee signing (and so much that I've followed, is only an oral agreement so far?), this offseason is officially the dullest in recent memory.

Six more days till things should heat up!

Leee Majors (Leee), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Sheff is entertaining other offers... the Yanquis made their bid and his agent is keeping the window open to talk to other GMs (altho it is doubtful that anyone will match the Yanquis $$$).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(and the Yanquis seem to know that).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Florida resigned Castillo.

NYY are dropping cash on the elderly. They signed Tom "Flash" Gordon and are to trade Weaver for Kevin Brown, who still gets major cash. You would have thought the Yanquis learned their lesson in the 80s, but now that The Boss is calling the shots it is expected I suppose.

earlnash, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget Enrique Wilson (signed today for 1-year). He hit .230 last year.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, George, you have been missed.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 5 December 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

After reading Gammons most recent column, it sounds like the Red Sox are opening up the warchest and going to get freaky with the cash.

I think the arms race is just getting started.

Of course, both teams will drop all of this cash and the Royals will probably win the AL with a payroll the size of the Yanquis buffet budget.

earlnash, Sunday, 7 December 2003 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I've waited 1 month for Mr. Sabean to make his move and now MICHAEL TUCKER. Well done!

Leee Trevino (Leee), Monday, 8 December 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is going to get Ivan R.?

From the way it looks, he is not going to stay with Florida, as he wants too much cash. None of the big spenders need a catcher and those that might drop the cash would perhaps go for Javy Lopez, since he should be more affordable.

What about Greg Maddux? He is an older pitcher that might be worth giving a three year deal. I'd love to see him go back to the Cubs to finish his career, but there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that would happen.

earlnash, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

From the way it looks, he is not going to stay with Florida, as he wants too much cash.

he wants the same $$$ he made this year ($10MM) for 4 years. he's not young and perhaps the marlins know something about his "dietary intake".

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

from espn:

The Phillies signed free-agent reliever Tim Worrell to a two-year contract believed to be worth about $6 million, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported Tuesday.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

also matt stairs to KC for $1MM. he looked good last year for an old dude.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Enduring memory of Matt Stairs during brief stint as a Cub:

Upset that he couldn't have signature song played over PA as he approached the plate at Wrigley.

His song: Something by some professional wrestler.

Conclusion: Goof!

gusbot (eternal_fields), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Other than a small time in the 80s when they signed Fisk and Luzinski, the White Sox have never been very good at keeping or signing free agents.

The Big Hurt is rare player that has stayed for such an extended period with the Sox.

Reinsdorf hasn't had much luck with the Bulls either since Jordan and Jackson bailed.

The ownership of the Bears and Cubs are about as bad.

earlnash, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

earlnash forgot to mention the blackhawks ownership is awful as well

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

pettite to the astros

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Blackhawks ownership is probably the worst in all of professional sports with the exception (maybe) of the Cincinnati Bengals. I'm amazed that anyone with Bob Pulford's track record is still gainfully employed.

As a Cubs fan, I would rather have seen Andy Pettite remain in NYC.

gusbot (eternal_fields), Thursday, 11 December 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Astros owners have left an open offer to Clemens.

Pettitte is a winner, how he will fare in the NL and with the Astros I think is debatable. It isn't like he is a Cy Young canidate, but being left handed is a definite bonus.

It has to be tempting offer for Clemens, although every NL team will chuck at his dome at least once a start.

Maybe the Tribune will get into the cold war and sign Maddux.

The football Cardinals are worse than the Bengals. The Bengals were pretty good in the 80s/90s with a couple of Superbowl trips (and like to joke that they covered the spread both times against the 49ers). Yes they haven't made the playoffs since Bush I, but isn't like the Cards have done anything ever. Cinci fans are still into it (somewhat) considering how bad they have been for so long.

Actually the absolute zero of US pro sports is probably the LA Clippers. Getting drafted by them is like getting banished to the the freakin' phantom zone.

Tejada to Baltimore!

Leee Iacocca (Leee), Monday, 15 December 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

6 years, $72 mil. Woah.

Leee Iacocca (Leee), Monday, 15 December 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

rumors are zooming around the mid-atlantic section on INTERWEB that I-Rod and Vlad will be joining Tejada in Bawlmer. interesting.

tobo, Monday, 15 December 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

MLB signs Everett for the Expos, figuring Frank Robinson will clock his ass if he gets out of line and if he does freak out it will be in Montreal where no one will notice.

Consider this a MLB bonus to the rest of the teams in pro ball.

If this plan works out, the Expos will become the baseball penal colony.

earlnash, Monday, 15 December 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Even if Ivan and Vlad join the Orioles, they still won't be that great. Who is going to pitch.

Now if you could merge the Blue Jays and Orioles, then you would have a team.

earlnash, Monday, 15 December 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

There are a bunch of good players still available.

Ivan R. is backed into a corner with Baltimore getting Javy Lopez.

I don't understand the Yankees signing Kenny Lofton, unless they are planning on playing him at DH. They can't really be considering sitting Bernie Williams for Lofton? Can they? Either way, Lofton has even a worse arm than Bernie.

I'm still holding out hope that the Cubs will bring Maddux back. Probably won't happen, as he was pretty angry with them when he left, but it would be great if they did.

earlnash, Friday, 26 December 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Ponson back to the Giants.

Maddux has a deal waiting on his signature with the Cubs. ((Please sign it Greg, all is forgiven, you can come home.))

Where Ivan R. is going is still up in the air.

earlnash, Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops...Ponson back to the Orioles.

earlnash, Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still holding out hope that the Cubs will bring Maddux back. Probably won't happen, as he was pretty angry with them when he left, but it would be great if they did.

Why was he angry with the Cubs? (I don't live in the US, so am not up
to speed with all of these things)

ojitarian (ojitarian), Thursday, 15 January 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The year before Maddux won a Cy Young award with the Cubs, he wanted a long contract. The Cubs started lowballing him, even though he was a proven winner and the first good starter that their minor leagues had developed since hall of famer Ferguson Jenkins.

Maddux basically stated if they didn't have an extention worked out before his last season in Chicago started, he was going to file as free agent and leave no matter what. That season he won the Cy Young award and left as a free agent. He took less cash than the Cubs and Yankees offered to go to Atlanta. The Cubs pissed him off not wanting to get a deal done.

It was one of the worse mistakes they made in the recent past, as Maddux has been a very consistent/hall of fame level pitcher. The Cubs had a couple of seasons where they had good years, but were missing that top notch starter to put them over the top.

Chicago sports teams, while being quite profitable and generally well supported by the fans are all known for being stingy bastards. Usually when they spend money it is on some player that is terrible and not worth the cash.

earlnash, Thursday, 15 January 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Where Ivan R. is going is still up in the air.

According to Scott Boras (his agent), it's likely Detroit with a small possibility of the Cubs coming through at the last minute with some cash.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for those details, Earl. So any chance of the Cubbies tempting
him back to Chicago, or is he still pissed off? A mate of mine at
work is a huge Cubs fan (he's originally from Chicago) and is salivating
at the prospect of Maddux returning to Wrigley Field.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Friday, 16 January 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Maddux has stated he'd like to go to either Chicago or St. Louis. So it's definitely a possibility, if a good deal can be worked out. He can't harbor any ill will toward the Cubs; it's pretty much all new management since he left 10 years ago.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Would Prior / Wood / Maddux / Zambrano / Clement not be the best rotation in the majors?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The GM & manager are different, but the Chicago Tribune owned the Cubs then and now.

I'm sure Maddux realizes that it would be a special pitching staff if he comes on board, but then again he goes to St. Louis he get the additional bonus of stuffing it to the Tribune.

To be honest, I wouldn't doubt that the Cardinals out bid the Cubs on this one, they need another starting pitcher to keep up with the Cubs and Astros.

Other than cash, why would Ivan R. go to Detroit? It is sad to see Motown that far down the baseball food chain, but I don't see it turning around in the next couple of years. It is a shame he won't be in Miami this next season, no matter where he goes.

earlnash, Friday, 16 January 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Well Ivan R. is now a Tiger. They paid WAY too much for him, considering he doesn't pitch. A vet catcher with some pop at the plate isn't a bad place to build a team around, it worked in Florida, but Detroit doesn't have the pitching.

I suppose it is somewhat a sign to long suffering Tiger fans that they are trying to improve the roster.

earlnash, Monday, 2 February 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

the singing of ivan will without a doubt cement the tigers dominance of last place.
