the Bonds-Ruth-Aaron HR watch

Hank Aaron says Barry Bonds, who needs 53 home runs to eclipse Aaron's total of 755, is one of the top three players in baseball history, steroids or no steroids.

"He's one of the greatest players, whether he's one, two or three," Aaron said in an interview at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, where he was honored by the United Negro College Fund on Thursday night. "If he breaks my record, there should be no asterisk. They shouldn't put an asterisk on anything."

Aaron, who rarely comments on the talk of steroids in baseball because "you still have to hit the ball," suggested that he had no such problems when he played. "If I wanted more power, I would just eat an extra doughnut with my coffee," he said with a smile.

Morb, that was implied, of course!

That last paragraph is like the best inside joke ever.

Thermo, I'm guessing you missed the references to "players' coffee" (coffee laced w/ speed) in the mondo-sized steroid threads?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

For this comment alone, Hank Aaron is back on top of my list for BEST MOST AWESOMEST PLAYER AND PERSON OF ALL TIME

Ha haha!

Thanks Dave - I missed the coffee thing; only checking in on the 'roids threads randomly. I only have so much free time!

*sigh* I really hoped we could keep the tired steroid palaver outta this thread. Oh well...

What date does BB hit #715?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking late April 2006.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I assume you mean 756, D. First things first.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh junk! I need to do my futon math!

#715 = May 3rd, 2005.

Barry just had knee procedure #2 for his chronic osteoarthritis, which likely puts off his debut til late April.
