Not "dead" as in "about to kick the bucket", but "dead" as in "about to get sent down / released / shitcanned for saying something stupid and/or batting Tike Redman 3rd".

In honor of the recently cut Rick Ankiel (Released In Peace) (to be resigned by the Cards as a minor leaguer if he clears waivers, I think).

two weeks pass...
OK - who had the Toronto hitting coach in the pool?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Has an announcer even been canned mid-season? That'd be a neat trick!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

wasn't steve stone sort of canned before the end of last season?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I think he was put out there Prometheus-style, but not officially canned.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I just said what you said, didn't I? My bad.

Benito Santiago got cut loose by the Pirates today, you have to wonder if this is the last stop in the bigs. This is the third or fourth time he seemingly is washed up, but I think this might be the last call. I'

i dunno w/o having seen him play, i would guess that the pirates are maybe cashing in their chips somewhat and maybe feel that now is as good a time as any to see what their young catchers are like. i know one of the guys that's been getting time behind the plate is a dude they got in a trade...

BS was washed up 5 years ago before somehow getting back some of his utility (ie. remembering how to hit the ball). The fact that he lasted this long is a testament to the power of the veteran veneer, the paucity of quality catching in the majors, and the absentmindedness of a team like the Pirates signing a player that (thankfully only temporarily) blocked the progress of a guy that should be the starter. Kudos to him for lasting this long - I don't doubt some team will take a flyer on him (Mets? Giants? LA? Seattle?), & it's up to him to want to keep on keepin' on. PAY BENITO!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 May 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

i will personally issue a contract on the condition that benito grows back his old school perm/mullett 'do!

Dead Pool, Sports Reporters Edition:

Does the NY Daily News story about Bonds' possible conviction for tax fraud have no credibility whatsoever, or is Pedro Gomez really such an atrocious reporter that he got scooped by a newspaper on the opposite coast despite having his nose in Barry's jock 24 hours a day?

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 9 May 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm prone to believe the former, but, y'know, you can miss a lot if you're not looking. Also, the smell of a jock can be very distracting.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 May 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Would've loved to hear the "Why Didn't You Get This?" call P. no doubt had with Bristol.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 9 May 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

No way the Giants will hop onto Benito version 2.0, especially with the mucho moneys they've sunk into Math(eny) Rock.

Lee (Leee), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

tony pena...gone!

resigned, though.

chatter surrounds his legal troubles.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

It has been a bad week for 1980s era Allstar catchers. Mike Scioscia better watch his step.
