The dude's bonafide - has speed, has some pop, has patience at the plate, has the Yankee prospect pedigree (from back when that meant something). Ryan Freel is an Eckstein in training - stop giving his white hustle ass PT over a guy that can actually, y'know, help your damn team win those 10-8 pitching duels.

If The Wedge wants to spot-start Jose Hernandez all over the dingdongin' place in the infield, whatever. Why you'd want JH in the OUTFIELD (a place he doesn't go too often), instead of seeing what a highly-touted kid can do for you, I don't know. Casey Blake = meh. Coco Crisp = meh plus (but only because of his name). Juan Gone = super meh (& right where he belongs, on the DL). Grady Sizemore (& Ryan Ludwick) = THE FUTURE. RECOGNIZE, TURKEYS. & please to stick the Veteran Leadership in the time capsule with the pogs, the Lark Voorhees poster, and the Browns Bernie Kosar jersey.

FREE WILY MO PENA!!!
Dude is cock-blocked in the Cincy outfield; he's played two games and hit home runs in each of them!
― Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 11 April 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)
Ha - Wily Mo will be free(l)d once Griffey and/or Kearns visits the Black Cat Ladder Factory.

i dunno, seems to me when you have a supersub that plays all outfield spots, all infield except ss, has speed and gets on base, you find a way to get him games. not like the o's are having trouble scoring runs, but still...

(BTW, I'm still lovin' that Theo E. turned Roberts' mad dash for 2nd in the ALCS into a solid back-up OF AND a nice utility guy.)

'Last Saturday's Yankees-Orioles game ended when Jack Cust, caught in a rundown off third, evaded his pursuers and dashed for an unguarded home plate -- only to fall and be tagged out by Aaron Boone.'

Apr 21 Deciding to give Ken Griffey the day off, the Cincinnati Reds used Pena in center field for Wednesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The move payed off, as the outfielder went 2-for-4 and belted two home runs. He hit a solo homer to left-center in the fourth inning before connecting for a two-run shot in the seventh.Advice: Pena has hit safely in five consecutive contests. For the season, he is batting .353 with five home runs and 10 RBI in just 34 at-bats. If he continues to produce those types of numbers, it will be hard to keep him out of the lineup. Pena will split time in right with Austin Kearns and will get the nod in center when Griffey needs a rest.

Seeing what the crappy Alex Gonzalez can do at 3B instead of seeing what BJ Upton can do @ SS or 2B (w/ Cantu or Lugo moving where needed) is the sort of short-minded goose turdery that makes me happy my team gets to whup up on these asshats 19 times a year.

Meanwhile, Dusty Baker has chosen, almost inexplicably, to free everyone. Ronnie Cedano at SS, DuBois full time in LF. Now with Zambrano injured and the season quickly going down the toilet, it's only a matter of time before he has the next set of Cubs pitching prospects to ruin free.

i think the only reason chase has been relatively free lately is b/c of injuries to rollins & thome. i wish polanco were free a byrd.

Still! Olivo's Stats Inc. profile refers to him as "a bit of a free swinger," which is a little like saying that Milton Bradley's a nice guy once you get to know him.

Also, since Wiki tweaked his wigwam (or something) last game, it looks like MO is the one to go to for all your rally-killing and groundout needs for the forseeable future.
