i mean, seriously...what are the chances of him finishing the season in colorado?

i had already been hearing chatter that the o's were trying to put something together, but when laura vecsey has an piece on how the o's should get helton...game on! obviously, yanks have to be prominently in the mix, too.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Yes, because the Yankees need a first baseman - two is never enough! Maybe they can make Tino play CF, scrap Giambi for parts & sweetbread, trade for Cy Young, & turn Bernie Williams into a coat rack. Fucking Yankees would be in the mix for a can of corn if it hit .500 against the Red Sox & finished 5th in MVP ballotting in 2813.

As nice as it would be to have Helton (dude needs a nickname), the O's should worry about the pitching portion of the game, because Bruce Chen & Plump Sidney is not the answer.

One possibly interesting team for Helton: DA METZ. Damned if I know what Colorado would want from them, tho. Also, Minky should be enough of a stopgap @ 1B to make trading for Helton's salary look unappealing.

Maybe Billy Beane can get a loan from Baron Davis that'll finance trading for him. Helton, that is - not sure where Davis would fit on the A's roster.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

well, the vecsey article is fanciful, at best b/c i can't see why the o's would part w/ hayden penn for a 31 year old first baseman if they wouldn't have done so for hudson or mulder. plus, big walter young!

but i could see the yanks shipping giambi off to co and eating the bulk of his salary for helton. just seems like something they might do...i mean, i think your much ballyhooed can of corn could possibly hit 30-40 hrs in mile high. dante bichette did it!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Unless a 3rd team gets invovled to eat the Giambino contract, I can't see the Rockies wanting to swap one millstone for another. JG's under contract for at least another 3 years (I thought - dude signed a 6 or 7-year deal only 3 years ago), & Helton's a much better all-around hitter than JG ever was (juiced or otherwise). If the only reason to trade Helton is to alleviate financial burden, having to take on an even bigger financial burden ain't the way to do it. Unless the Yankees are gonna make the Rockies partial owners of YES.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

That is, unless. Unless.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

It's too bad the teams that could really use a 1B (Giants, Dodgers) are in the same division as the Frost-Brewers.

Who're these O's prospects you're big-upping, JQ?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Of course, once Hee Sop goes buckwild on everyone, the D's 1B needs will be ably filled. But I digress.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Is Helton a free agent at the end of the season? If he is under contract beyond this season, I can't see the Rockies shipping him off. I can't believe the Rocks would trade off their most popular player for an somewhat admitted roid freak, at least during the season. The Mets makes a bit more sense, but would Fred take on another big dollar player?

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Nobody is going to trade for Giambi (unless the Yankees pay his entire contract basically and I doubt they'll do it.)

david r:

hayden penn is the dude that has pretty much leapfrogged the pack in the much-maligned o's farm system. him & john maine are their most marketable pitchers, although there's still a lot riding on adam loewen. walter young is a man mountain of a first baseman that damn well might be starting next season.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Well, hell, the O's had fun trading away one young pitcher (for JASON GRIMSLEY) - why not ship out the rest of the farm system for another hitter they really don't need?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

GOOFING

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Helton needs out of Colorado so he can build a reputation that's not based on Coors Field.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

elephant in the dugout: helton is unbelievably racist.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

His career road stats do a fine job of that, though. In the last three years away from Coors, he's got a line of .310 / .422 / .517 (in 832 ABs), as opposed to .380 / .482 / .699 in Coors (in 851 ABs). Of course, he has more runs scored, more RBIs, and a LOT more HRs (62 v. 33) on top of Old Smokey, but that's true of every Rockie that isn't Jeff Cirillo.

Unfortunately, ESPN.com only does road / home splits for the last three years, so we're missing his career-best years (2000, 2001) and the pretty fine pair of years preceeding that.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

STENCIL IS A HATER OF BASEBALL

I really wish that sort of statement (the racism thing) actually surprised me, though I'd love to see / hear proof of this before I cross TH off my Christmas card list.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

i don't hate baseball at all, dave. i was just stating a well-known fact to those in the know, not those who write two paragraphs of vitriol on every thread every two minutes.

ha, sorry dude, just kidding. can't give you the proof but let's just say i know it from an inside source.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

DISH

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

"inside source" = hstencil is Todd Helton & is currently posting from the Rockies dugout, w/ Colorado down 1-0.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

uh, no, i'm in brooklyn.

let's just say helton is not particularly nice to certain members of the press who happen to be minorities.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

BREAKING NEWS!! ONION FOUND IN HSTENCIL'S OINTMENT!

Organized Crime (Leee), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

i am not a member of the press, dummy. or a minority, for that matter.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Dude, when you go to get your hate-dar fixed, you should really see if they can tweak your sense of humor, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

dude you're the hater!

(hahaha where's the second graph?)

see?!!!?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

h, please stop baiting DR@p0s@.

thanks!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

PS r@p0s@:

The Giants don't need a 1B UNLESS they get rid of Alfonzo.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

who FWIW is about as prime for trade bait as ever!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I'd imagine Snow is more tradeable than Alfie, though I'd also imagine that the Jints want to dump Alfie more than Snow. (Aw, remember when I said the Alfie signing was a good one? Awwww, I was so stupid.)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

gygax! please be less sensitive. my initial post was not addressed to nor baiting one rapo$a.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

well i'm neither addressing your initial post nor my sensitivity, but rather your recent annoying comments. would it be too much to tone it down for the better good of the board? i'd appreciate it and i imagine some others might too. thanks!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

i didn't realize i was ruffling anybody's feathers. if i offend, i apologize. i will state, though, that it hardly makes sense to have an "everyone-talk-shit-except-hstencil" rule but it's your board, so it's your rules, and i'll abide by them.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna disagree with the notion that Snow (37y/o, can't hit lefties, no longer a Gold Glover) is gonna bring more in return than Alfonzo (esp. after his start this year). It would also be an ethical concern to trade Snow after he took a huge cut to stay with the Giants

But you're right, Alfonzo has another year with SF (at about $6.5M). Only if he maintains his current MASH pace until the trade deadline would anyone be willing to take a flier on him.

xpost:
I might be out of line for calling you out, but your baiting seems kinda mean-spirited and unnecessary (and in the case of your most recent post to the SABR thread, in poor taste). Other than a few J0hn D@hl3m incidents, I think every contributor on here gets along and I think that's a GOOD thing. Are you in favor of keeping it that way? Smiles and hugs?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

smiles and hugs, yes. pats on butt, yes.
