Or, more specifically, sliding head-first into first. Some manager needs to get all Gene Hackman in Hoosiers on his team & time how long it takes to run through the bag v. sliding into it, & then follow that up w/ all the tape out there of hitters getting their fingers / hands broken / speared by making such a bonehead move. Saw Omar Vizquel do this (carrying the torch that Ozzie [EXPLETIVE] Guillen lit) this weekend, as well as CARLOS BELTRAN! Looks good for the folks, but, really, JUST RUN FULL SPEED.

Beltran was doing it to avoid a possible tag (by a late-covering pitcher), which is the only defensible circumstance for it.

Really? I thought it was a regular ground-out type of situation. Yeah, I'll go w/ that.

I participated in some baseball camp as a kid (back when I was super-pudgy & hated sports), and during the head-first-slide drill, I belly-flopped and knocked the wind out of myself. I think I actually landed ON THE BAG. Not a shining moment in my CV.

Didn't Kenny Lofton fuck up his leg pretty bad sliding into first during the '99 playoffs? The potential risk of injury, in most cases, would seem to outweigh the potential reward.
