your 2005 All-Star ballot(s)

I just voted online for the first of perhaps 25 times:

First Base: M. Teixeira, TEX; A. Pujols, STL
Second Base: B. Roberts, BAL; J. Kent, LAD
Third Base: A. Rodriguez, NYY; C. Jones, ATL
Shortstop: M. Tejada, BAL; C. Izturis, LAD
Catcher: I. Rodriguez, DET; R. Hernandez, SD
Outfielder: J. Damon, BOS; B. Abreu, PHI
Outfielder: G. Sheffield, NYY; M. Cabrera, FLA
Outfielder: I. Suzuki, SEA; J. Edmonds, STL
DH: D. Ortiz, BOS

I'm very careful about not voting for half-season wonders, unless there are no other obvious candidates. About five NL 2Bs are having somewhat better offensive years than Kent, but the only one besides him who's a legit All-Star starter is Biggio, and he really can't field anymore, can he? David Wright is having nearly as good a year as Chipper, and I'll probably split my ballots to give him some votes, but he's been a bit enigmatic with the glove, and will likely be starting 2007-2012 anyway. Obv, Vlad, Bonds and Rolen I bypassed due to injury, and Piazza cuz he can't get the ball to second more than once a month. I was tempted to vote for Manny as his numbers will likely assume normal shape by August.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

My fantasy team contains two of your seventeen picks, so you'd think I'd be higher than 9th.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

I'd probably go for V-Tek over I-Rod (comparable EQAs 3 of the last 4 years, but JV is whupping on IR this year) (don't bring up base stealing, tho), but otherwise, Morb's ballot seems spot-on.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Haha for all our arguing, Morbs, I think that's the exact same ballot I had for the AL (I think I had Varitek too and Guerrero, but I voted b4 he got hurt.) I think I had Barmes at SS too, but that was when he was hitting near .375 (and I don't remember my NL catcher, except whoever it was I was non-plussed about voting for him.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

AL

C Varitek
1B Morneau
2B Roberts
SS Tejada
3B ARod
OF Damon
OF Manny
OF Sheff
DH Ortiz

NL

C Hernandez
1B Delgado
2B Kent
SS Greene
3B Wright
OF Edmonds
OF Abreu
OF Cabrera

Like Morbs, I don't like to vote for potential flashes in the pan (ahem, Clint Barmes), and mix it up between the best guys and the guys I like.

I have just realized that the AL is seriously short on All-Star calibre outfielders (compared to the NL).

Wright deserves some props. I don't really like any AL 1B'men, so I voted for Morneau, who is killing the ball and is Canadian.

1B in the NL is the toughest choice of the bunch, but I like Delgado, so there.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Dammit, Pujols is All-Universe for the foreseeable future.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

But Delgado's got a great smile!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Derrek Lee, people.

avg "run production" walks steals power defense 6'5" of team-carrying pwnage

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

The way it should be:

1) Albert Pujols
2) Derrekk Llee
2a) Carlos Delgado's smile
3) Carlos Delgado

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Gear, file D Lee under "Never Done This Before." Pujols has had a career start like only Teddy W, DiMag etc.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

T-Will! Oh, if ONLY Ted Williams played during The Era Of The Lazy-Ass Nickname.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I saw this coming! (D-Lee)

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

This is probably Lee's only chance at All-Star considering that slow starts he's usually had.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

2005 VORP:

Derrek Lee 42.0
Albert Pujols 28.9

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Derrek Lee EQA (2001-2005):

.278
.299
.303
.281
.370 (!!!!)

Albert Pujols EQA (2001-2005):

.324
.315
.356
.334
.319

As if being a runner-up All-Star is bad. Just because shitbombs like Ken Harvey and Scott Cooper were benchtastic All-Stars don't mean it's a shame when you get picked to back up the best non-injured player in baseball.

Given that Derrek is already half-way to matching his career-high in HRs (703 SLG!), I think he's flipping his script and gathering stats for a long and cold post-July swoon.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

So do you never vote for rookies, Morb?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Like who? maybe Fred Lynn in '75.

Whose VORP will be higher after 162, Derrek or Albert? I think I know.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Delgado's smile!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I think the possibility does exist, based on what he's done up to this point in his career, that Derrek Lee has finally maxed out on his full potential. This isn't entirely unexpected, like Sammy in '98. patient hitter, good power, good average.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

I think that overstating the case a bit -- one never expects *anybody's* potential to max out at 1150 OPS -- but Lee is undoubtedly having a better season than Pujols at this point. Also, Lee's EQA's have been very good over the past few years so it's not like we're dealing with a guy who's gone from crapola to Ruthian numbers in one year (see: Brian Roberts). Lee won't continue at his present pace, but he's clearly not a mediocre talent having a fluke season.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

This is why I voted for Delgado -- he'll be forgotten in all the Lee vs Pujols hoopla (those guys play for high-profile teams and will get enough votes as it is).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

one thing about Lee is that he's slowed way down... if he was still a true 5-tool threat (esp. on the basepaths), I think he'd be even more obvious of a choice. Plus he's younger than Pujols! ;-)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

he's still on pace for 30+ steals!

well "maxed out" was the wrong phrase, but I think that an OBPS of 950-1000 for the next few years is a possibility!

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

5 hits so far tonight for Lee, one of them a 3 run hr. goddamn. (oh and 4 for Neifi!)

Nomar leads the NL voting for shortstops. what a joke.

()ops (()()ps), Thursday, 2 June 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

AL
Varitek
Teixeira
Roberts (tough call over Soriano)
ARod
Tejada
Sheffield
Ichiro
ManRam (all his numbers except BA are strong)
DH: Ortiz

NL
Hernandez
Lee (I don't feel too bad for Pujols because he will be the first reserve taken)
Kent
Glaus (tough call over Wright)
Itzuris (his defense made him my pick over flash in the pan Clint Barmes and out of nowhere Felipe Lopez)
Abreu
Cabrera
Giles

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 2 June 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

Can I also point out that Lee is a much better fielder than Pujols, by all accounts I've read?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 2 June 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

But Pujols is a GOD.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

Were those "accounts" by Derrek's mom? Pujols led all MLB first basemen in Range Factor AND Zone Rating last year and is currently #1 in RF. (Lee was third from the bottom in RF in '04.) Plus A.P. is the best hitter not named Bonds, y'know.

I can't vote for a guy -- unless he's a clear landslide winner and I'm trying to push an underexposed guy to runnerup -- unless he's the plausible answer to "Is he the best at this position in his league?" Not this WEEK or for TWO MONTHS, but at this phase of his career.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Plus Pujols is a GOLDEN GOD.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 2 June 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

don't rock the boat! temporary changes in the status quo are ill-advised!

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 2 June 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

I apologize about the defense thing. i guess I heard Tim McCarver say it and assumed it was true.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Lee's still a vacuum cleaner at first, albeit one with a shorter cord than Pujols. Hey, in some Sun-Times article Mike Kiley said, "Lee is a frontrunner for NL MVP right now but he has stiff competition for TEAM MVP from NEIFI PEREZ."

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

>i guess I heard Tim McCarver say it and assumed it was true<

YOU'RE the one!

Tino leading at Al 1b is a joke too, but I don't think even Yankee bots can keep that up.

Stay alert for the first "Bonds is 13th among OFs -- see how unpopular he's gotten?" column.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Neifi Perez is the Craig Counsell of the Cubs.

This is according to their fantasy ranking on Yahoo?
How does Yahoo come up with those ranking anyhow? I'm assuming they're using a rather straightforward formula.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 3 June 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

I think it's based on the ol' 5x5 system. I'll bet Derrek Lee is #1 overall, right? esp. with the 9 steals.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Friday, 3 June 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Nope it's our league and our rankings.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 3 June 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

and yes Lee is #1 (for now).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 3 June 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

NL 3B VORP leaders:

David Wright 23.5
Morgan Ensberg 19.6
Chipper Jones 18.2

So play the game the Wright Way!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

And don't forget, Willie - the best 3B in the NL should stay in the bottom 3rd of the order, lest he get full of himself!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

don't vote for barmes, kid can't carry his groceries.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Haha wtf. Get a ground floor apartment, kiddo.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

dude could buy a house!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah and that helped Bob Ojeda!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

heh.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

At least Ojeda didn't FALL UPSTAIRS.

Willie batted Wright 6th and 5th on Sunday, maybe he's seen the light.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

Haha no way I am disputing that breakin' your collarbone while carrying your GROCERIES upstars is a lot more goofy even than some wacky gardening shear accident.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Where do you guys find those VORP stats?

What is the difference between Jimmy Rollins and Cesar Izturis in VORP?

It is a shame about Barmes, as he had blasted out of his slump against the Cards and Reds in the past week. He will have to hear about carrying those grocerys for the rest of his career.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

http://baseballprospectus.com/statistics/

They're down at themo (daily update I presume).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

I'm here to lobby for your votes for Morgan Ensberg for NL All-Star at third base. He is currently leading all NL third basemen in OPS and is second in RBI. And, after tonight's walk-off three-run homer against the Blue Jays, he is tied with Troy Glaus for the league lead in that category among third basemen. Also, the Astros are no longer in last place.

I thank you for your support.

boldbury (boldbury), Sunday, 12 June 2005 04:15 (nineteen years ago)

He's leading all NL 3B in OPS in a hitter's paradise, and trails Rob Mackowiak and Wright in both VORP and Equivalent Average.

However, by my own standards of going by "Who is the best now, and is likely to be at the end of the year?", I must admit the proper choice is Rolen, month on the DL or not. Likewise I am going to restore Vlad to my ballot.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 June 2005 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

(OK, not a hitter's paradise, but more favorable to hit in than Shea)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 June 2005 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

Lee and Pujols are leading the voting for NL 1B, which is obviously sensible, but Delgado is fifth behind MINKY AND BAGWELL??!!!?!?!! What a sick joke.

wow, soriano over roberts totally illustrates why i will never ever bother with fantasy baseball. [no offense guys!]

John (jdahlem), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

also morbs wright currently is putting up offensive numbers better than all but a couple rolen seasons. i don't know how he is with the glove and i admire yr willpower or whatever but jesus man, i'd be voting for him. esp if i had a man-crush on him. unfortunately for him mine's on rolen so you know where my vote's going.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

He's been very enigmatic with the glove. I'd like to see him perform at this level another year before I'd pick him over Rolen.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Teixeira leading at 1b (as Tino was hoping, out of embarrassment) and Abreu leads all NL OFs! The fans do not do badly, generally.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

I forgot til last night they'll use a DH, which means both Pujols and D Lee will be in the lineup.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

i have a hard time swallowing that there isn't a 1B more deserving than teixera in all of the american league. fucking arlington pisses me off.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry Andruw, you just play on a team with too fukcing many hatas hatin' on it.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 3 July 2005 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

I'm assuming that Kenny Rogers' suspension includes the All-Star Game? Has there been any official word on this?

Good to see that the fans came through with that last-minute voting push for Derrek Lee.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 3 July 2005 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

No, Kurkjian was saying the other night that the All Star Game was just an exhibition and not applicable to Rogers' situation. (Even though "This time it counts."(TM) (C) (R))

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

The "exhibition" factor makes sense, but then there's the fact that he was involved in an extremely public off-the-field encounter that was entirely his fault, handed one of the biggest suspensions ever, and has now been picked to represent his league.

I don't think anything like this has happened before, but I wouldn't find it out of place if they removed him from the All-Star roster.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

AP:
Rogers, who has mostly refused to speak with reporters this year, gets a $50,000 bonus for making the All-Star team. Because he asked the players' union to appeal the penalty, he will be allowed to participate in the July 12 game at Detroit, baseball spokesman Pat Courtney said. Rogers has not decided whether he will go, according to Rangers spokesman Rich Rice.

"He was voted in by the players. He appealed his suspension and the league will not hear it until after the All-Star Game," said Boston's Terry Francona, the AL manager. "I abided by the process."

If the appeal was going to be heard before the All Star Game, I'd guess he'd be barred from the game. He lucked out in the timing.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

That's pretty pathetic.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 4 July 2005 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just completely baffled by how Morgan Ensberg gets left off the team. He currently leads all NL third basemen in HR, RBI, OBP, SLG, and OPS.

Also, I guess double digit wins and the third best ERA in the league isn't good enough either.

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

You mean Oswalt?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

re: rogers

voted on by the players or not, if he is put in, that's pretty pathetic...though i'm not sure i agree w/ a 20 game suspension.

re: ensberg

i've actually heard a lot of bitching about larussa this year. maybe it's just soemthing brewing at the post, b/c i know boswell specifically was bitching about guillen and nick johnson getting left off the squad, but i've heard other folks talk shit about larussa, too.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Ensberg would've been adecent choice, but it's only his last hot 10 days that lifted him aboveWright, Ramirez etc. Now ppl think a hot week makes an undisputed All-Star. I don't get it.

Somehow I wouldn't be shocked if Andruw has a middling second half. He doesn't have an established All-Star starter level; Edmonds does.

The last-spot vote is ridiculously easy, Jeter and Oswalt. (Oswalt would clearly be a bigger snub than Ensberg)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

... and it's those two who are leading with about 30 hours to go.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

After the fan vote, player vote, and the necessity of choosing a player from each team, LaRussa and Francona only had one choice apiece, which they spent on John Smoltz and Bartolo Colon, respectively. Still, I'm not sure why LaRussa would go with Smoltz over Oswalt or even his own Matt Morris, who's 10-1, 3.17, and not even a candidate for the last-spot vote.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

I can think of many Octobery reasons why TLR didn't pick Matty M. I predict Schmoltz will throw 482 pitches.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

(When did Smoltz go back to starting? Somehow I missed this.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'm totally biting yesterday's Chicago Tribune article on this topic, but Francona could've chosen one of his own, too, and decided not to: Matt Clement.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

WHOA! That's a pretty impressive sensory deprivation tank you got there, jay!

(It was decided during the off-season, though I think Smoltz did most of the deciding. That's why the Bravos got Kolb. Genius!)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

I'm rather surprised Smoltz didn't tank as a starter.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Me too. I'm actually really impressed by him.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'm surprised that you guys are so surprised. A lot of guys fail in converting from starter to closer/reliever (and vice versa), but Smoltz has excelled at both. Also, it's not like he hadn't been a starter for ten years before returning to the job.

Smoltz's success in his 2nd run as a starter isn't so much surprising as it is unprecedented.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

Okay I guess I am mostly impressed that he's stayed healthy so far.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

David, there's lots of baseball goings-on that I don't pay attention to! Witness me being 18th in the fantasy league!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

Can somebody explain to me the player vote? When did this start? I didn't realize the managers were no longer making all the decisions on the reserves. How many roster spots do the player votes account for? I looked for info on this earlier today but couldn't find anything.

I guess the player vote is the reason Brad Lidge made the team. As an Astro fan, I didn't really consider him to be a prime candidate for the team this year. He has been pretty up-and-down so far and had stretches early on where his save opportunities were few and far between. I think the consensus among Astro fans is that Oswalt deserves it far more than Lidge, based on this season's numbers.

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

One vote for each league.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

The player vote also explains how Paul Konerko, who, despite 19 HRs and 53 RBI, is batting .243 (!), made the AL squad.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

(BTW, boldbury, the players select a backup at each position and I want to say five pitchers per league?)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

Who is the least deserving AL All-Star?

No one said Konerko?!?

I am surprised as Smoltz's success too, just because it's unprecedented. I thought he'd feel the strain of a starter's workload (and he may yet).

Crain is a glaring omission and Duchscherer least deserving?

Crain 38.1 IP, 17.3 VORP
Duchscherer 42.2 IP, 16.0 VORP

ppl who think Rolen is least deserving = Kruk-level droolers

Scott Podsednik, All-Star, has the same ring as "Shakespeare in Love," Best Picture. Way to stuff those boxes, Sox bots!

Hafner wasn't even on the last-spot ballot? And Carlos Guillen gets crapped on once again. Thank God everyone forgets all this shit two days after the game.

The Houston Chronicle's website is reporting that Morgan Ensberg has been added to the NL All-Star team, but it doesn't say who he is replacing and I can't find anything about it the Astros' or MLB's official websites.
