2003 Rookie Of The Year Awards

AL: Angel Berroa
NL: Dontrelle Willis

First, I think Berroa not only deserved the award outright but is a better player than the streaky Matsui (although his great fakeout on the play off of the Green Monster impressed me).

But Dontrelle Willis is a lazy choice. Brandon Webb is a much better pitcher than Dontrelle-- who since the all-star break struggled quite a bit and then fell apart in the play-offs. And I don't think the "but he played for the World Series Champions" excuse works here because he was a liability in the post-season for the marlins, losing his starting role and accumulating a 8.53 post-season ERA.

Any thoughts?

I would have given it to Webb, too. Very happy about the Berroa choice.

AL- Matsui
NL- Willis

Take out what he did the first month of the season and Matsui looks much less streaky. Besides that he didn't miss a game, drove in over 100 runs and is an excellent outfielder.

Willis isn't the best player, but considering the fact they won it all and their march towards greatness coincides with him and McKeon showing up should earn some bonus points. He did pitch well in that one game against NY in relief, which is where I think he will eventually end up.

Willis pitches too funky and I think he will be prone to getting out of hand as a starter, especially the more times in a game someone hits against him. With his energy and the oddball delivery, he might make a better reliever, as people only seeing him once I think will have a harder time.

Baldelli

four months pass...
Scott Posednik should have gotten the NL Rookis of the year awards they must have been freakin blind check out these stats.
.343 batting average
9 hr
58 rbi
and get this 43 stolen bases.
So its basicly a toss up between him and Berroa, But i woulda picked Posednik. Jody Gerut for AL was by far the correct choice.

uh, not really.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm agreeing with John but disagreeing with gygax! (This shocks me, but I'm willing to learn.) Everyone might have been right after all, Matsui and (after today's performance against Montreal) Willis. And I'm a big Podsednik fan!

willis ran out of gas around the all star break, webb got even better... webb, schmidt and prior all had fantastic YEARS, willis had a great month or two.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 9 April 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, i also have to mention willis is a hometown hero here... there were games at pac bell where willis was cheered for as loudly as any giants pitcher. and sure he had the marlins patented crooky, crusty hat and the flashy legkick, but i'm gonna go with the boring "better ERA, WHIP BAA and lost too many games due to horrible run support" for my choice. webb is a better prospect.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 9 April 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

you go with him, I'll go with Dontrelle. hell, he could totally just be a pinch-hitter and I'd want him on my team!

webb doesn't suck though.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 9 April 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

also: the marlins would have coasted through the playoffs last year if it wasn't for dontrelle. he was a huge liability. his postseason OBPA was like .400.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 9 April 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the webb/willis debate is a tough one. webb has the numbers, willis has everything else - and this is one case where, in my opinion, "everything else" is enough to close the gap. i would've been happy either way.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 9 April 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax!, you don't think that his rookie phenom oh my goodness status helped to lift the marlins through the tough first part of the season? either that, or you don't think that should factor in at all?

"the marlins would have coasted through the playoffs"? seriously?

man, I'm just talkin' out my ass here. I don't crunch the numbers the way you do. just be careful how fast you write someone off: 14 wins and 140+ strikeouts in less than a full year is hardly "a good month or two."

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 9 April 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, he had 4 good months and one really bad one.

i too thought he faded after the first couple months; instead he was merely another victim of august's dog days.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 9 April 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

compare and contrast:

as you can see, 14 wins = dontrelle got run support. that's the big difference. webb pitched a better season = my vote for ROY.
