Billy Bean (no, not that Billy Beane), Piazza rumors (cf: the infamous "letter to the editor" from Out Magazine), last year's Sandy Koufax slander by then-Dodgers owner Murdoch's news service, Kazuhito Tadano's gay porn past...

why is homosexuality in baseball so taboo? what challenges await the first player out of the closet?

Kindly reflect on your opinions of same-sex forbidden acts off the diamond.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Athletics (not Oakland) as last "refuge" of heterosexual homophobic males to thread. See also war-conceits, comrades in trenches -- must depend on them therefore must fall into predetermined roles i.e. stability of identity, etc.

in what other universe can a man wear (sorry D-Backs fans) a teal and purple tunic blouse and tight white pants with matching stockings?

If your into jocks, daddies or locker room action this is the book you've been looking for. The sex is hot, hot, hot. The story is easy to get through, (lets face it, we bought it for the sex), and the plot is reasonable. I can't wait for Hitman's next one. I hope it cummin' very soon!!!

If I would have known that playing ball was so erotic I wouldn't have hid out in the locker room in high school. This is one hot book. Never have I wanted to play more with the team! This novel oozes with all kinds of wetness, sweat--all delicious things!

rosemary,

have you read the billy bean book? it's not very sexy but maybe can encourage some of your fantasies!

"t. hitman" as pseudonym is so wrong.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 29 January 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the tip, gygax!, I will check it out from the library this spring.

less, uh, flippant respsonse:

why is homosexuality in baseball so taboo?

Is it more or less than with other sports? (I know nothing about any sport)

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 1 February 2004 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It's sensitive in all sports. No one has on record outed himself while still playing, and even those retired/out of the sport tend to remain in the closet.

No shit! I think baseball has the sexiest uniforms and I'm not sure why I find them more attractive than those which reveal more flesh.

Has anyone read this novel? (I haven't, but I remember it piqued my interest when it was released, being a 13-year old baseball fan with a sudden interest in boys.)

two months pass...

"The Dreyfus Affair" is badly written.

I was until recently a regular on a gay sports fan BB, which I left because there were too many Log Cabin Republicans and assholes. It was generally deduced that Doug Glanville was the Out editor's bf.

I read Dave Pallone's book years ago, he described an affair with a NL middle infielder that I guess (pray) to be foxy Astros 2B Bill Doran.

gygax! posted that on the "Piazza New York Catcher" thread on ILM.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Ironically, Glanville will now have the opportunity to play for the team he followed growing up, the Phillies - a team that he had been attracted to by their teal blue road uniforms of the 1970s, complete with the Red P across the chest. This season, he will wear white with red pinstripes, and the modern look includes the Phillies name spelled out across the uniform, something Glanville hopes to change.

"I mentioned [the teal uniforms] to the Phillies organization and told them that's why I loved the team," said Glanville. "The [current road] greys are pretty cool, but I like that P they used to have, I don't really like the Phillies across the front. We'll see what we can do. Maybe if I establish myself a little bit, I can try to lobby for a change back [to the teal uniforms]."

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

The original column listed a series of clues; he fit them all.

The original column didn't leave that many clues: it pretty much said he was not the biggest star on his team, but a recognizable figure. And that he played on the East Coast.

Apparently, it was the anonymous article written by the player a year later that directed people to Glanville. (Which I'd love to read, but it doesn't appear to be online.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

I am not saying Doug Glanville is the infamous “gay ballplayer”. I’m definitely not claiming he’s the anonymous Lemon “boyfriend.” I’m just noting the fact that the same ballplayer who made bizarre comment last season about the Wrigley ivy turning “fuchsia” was at it again. He wrote an article for ESPN about an off-season trip to South Africa in which he relayed a conversation with a South African local who said, about baseball, “Nice outfits! Skin tight pinstripes are just one small step away from leotards.” Talk about the proverbial purse falling out. Doug, Doug, Doug. It’s not much of a closet if the walls are pink, with leopard-print window treatments, all guarded by a shih-tzu.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Apparently Doug, a Science graduate, likes Astronomy:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1771978

But I'm not sure quite what he means by this:
"We passed the time by covering everything from collimation (mirror alignment) to the assault on the sausage in Milwaukee."

A euphemism?

ojitarian (ojitarian), Thursday, 20 January 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

That's a reference to Randall Simon playing whack-a-mole w/ a woman wearing a sausage costume. (Sexxxxy!)

Getting engaged to a Playmate that was also on Baywatch is such a beard move. Like, c'mon, Mike, at least TRY.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 20 January 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

I think Glanville is supposed to be present on ESPN this season -- BBTN? -- which could give him a nice platform from which to come out.

two years pass...

Not in my opinion (aside from Cotts and Hardy), but...

TOP TEN REASONS FOR GAY MEN TO WATCH BASEBALL

1. C.J. Wilson, relief pitcher for the Texas Rangers. 6’1, 215, 26 years old. He is just plain hot and has an amazing myspace page to boot.

2. Adam Loewen, Pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles. 6’4, 215, 23 years old. So hot when you watch him play. Most generally the pictures on the team pages don’t do the players justice and most of the guy on this list are examples of this. Do me a favor and Google him.

3. Wily Mo Pena, right-fielder for the Boston Red Sox. 6’3, 245, 25 years old. He might not be everyone’s cup of tea, cause he is a big boy, but sometimes that can be suuuch a good thing.

4. JJ Hardy, shortstop for the Milwaukee Brewers. 6’2, 190, 24 years old. Those eyes could have me being his slave for the remainder of my days. He is just memorizing. Even the horrible picture of him on the team page makes him look like my next ex-boyfriend.

5. Neil Cotts, relief pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. 6’1, 200, 27 years old. He is a little twinkish, but his boyish good looks are just the ticket to the ballpark. And every time he throws a pitch, you get a great view of his butt.

6. Xavier Nady, right-fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates. 6’2, 210, 28 years old. He is born in Carmel, Calif., and has that California boy look. Beautiful face and a smile that is paralyzing.

7. Carlos Quentin, right-fielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks. 6’1, 225, 24 years old. Another right fielder, there must be some kind of hot rule if you want to play right field for a professional baseball team.

8. Brad Ausmus, Catcher for the Houston Astros. 5’11, 190, 38 years old. He is a little older than the rest of the group, but anyone who 38-year-olds can’t be hot is just stupid, cause this guy proves them very wrong.

9. Ichiro Suzuki, right-fielder for the Seattle Mariners. 5’9, 172, 33 years old. He looks so tough. I think that’s what I like about him. He is a very good-looking man, but it’s the tough guy image he likes to put out there that woes me. There is also a very provocative picture of him with his bat if you Google his name.

10. Lenny Dinardo, relief pitcher for the Oakland Athletics. 6’4, 190, 27 years old. He is tall and has long legs. You know what they say about long legs, long legs…big jeans.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 18 May 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

Ichiro, tough guy? The whole list reads like it was written by a 14-year-old.

The High Five

In 1977, Glenn Burke ran onto the field to congratulate his Los Angeles Dodgers teammate Dusty Baker after Baker hit his 30th home run in the last game of the regular season. Burke raised his hand over his head as Baker jogged home from third base. Not knowing what to do about the upraised hand, Baker slapped it, thus the two together were credited with inventing the high five.[10] After retiring from baseball, Burke, used the high five with other homosexual residents of the Castro district of San Francisco, where for many it became a symbol of gay pride and identification.[citation needed]

I've stared at the screen for five minutes trying to think of a response that isn't "Fuck you, Torii Hunter."

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-sports-homophobia-20121230,0,4284200,full.story

But former Angels outfielder Torii Hunter, among baseball's most thoughtful and intelligent players, isn't kidding when he says an "out" teammate could divide a team.

"For me, as a Christian … I will be uncomfortable because in all my teachings and all my learning, biblically, it's not right," he says. "It will be difficult and uncomfortable."

Fuck you, Torii Hunter.

Andy K, Sunday, 30 December 2012 23:45 (twelve years ago)

I'm fairly sure that most professional athletes have opinions on political and social issues that I would find abhorrent, if only I knew about them. I try not to think about that and enjoy sports regardless.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 31 December 2012 12:17 (twelve years ago)

Right. Publicized bigotry from a person/player you respected and liked is something else, though.
