College World Series

So I hadn't watched a single pitch of the College World Series, even though my alma mater, the University of Texas, is making its third appearance there in four years. Until tonight. I got out of class and headed over to my favorite sandwich shop, where I knew that tonight's Baylor-Texas matchup would be on the tube. I got there just in time to see the following sequence:

Top of 9th. Baylor's leadoff batter walks and his bunted to second. Texas intentionally walks a .190 hitter to get to a .250 hitter and set up the double play. The .250 hitter knocks a hump-back liner to center that the center fielder dives and picks off inches above the ground. At this point, the runner from second is head-down sprinting past third toward home. Centerfielder throws over the second-baseman's head. Throw is backed up and the inning-ending double play is completed.

Bottom of 9th. Texas' leadoff hitter is Chance Wheeless. Second pitch. Gone.

Woohoo! Texas is in the final best-of-three series. Their opponent will be determined tomorrow between Arizona St. and Florida.

Texas beat Baylor twice in the last three days after being swept by them in a trio of games in Waco earlier in the year, plus taking a beating in the Big 12 conference semi-final.

Tuesday;'s ASU/Nebraska game was terrific, as was last night's Baylor/Tulane. OK, nobody scored 13 runs in the 8th inning of either game, but I submit the pitching was a bit better.

I don't feel as bad about Ole Miss not making the series, with the eventual winner knocking them out.
