sheffield for cameron and CAIRO rumored. cameron, while a great fielder, is 32 and has a .632 OPS in june, and sheff's one of my favorite yankees. despite our gaping hole in center i can't help but feel a deal like this would hurt as much as or more than it would help, and having to PAY the mets to make this deal is completely ludicrous if a good prospect or ML pitcher isn't included in the package. sheffield isn't overpaid, and the yankees are getting less in value back.
bottom line america, i refuse to believe the yankees can't acquire a CF without a wash/net loss effect on the ml club. kotsay may be unavailable and sheffield may be cameron's cross-town fee, but this is a woefully desperate move on the yankees part, esp while they're still only 5.5 games out. i'd rather they sit this one out, and when they do make a move, keep the ml nucleus intact.

I'm sure they could put together a package for Burnett/Encarnacion, but I don't even think Encarnacion alone would get Kotsay from the A's, since Oakland wanted Cano/Duncan for him before they went on that winning streak.

Chad Bradford, due to come off the DL today or tomorrow, to Boston for Jay Payton. To be announced during/after the All-Star break.
Scenario one: bad news for Kotsay who made a reasonable extension request, may be 1:2-3 trade bait ala Hudson/Mulder.
Scenario two: bad news for Byrnes who the Yankees have warmed up to.
Scenario three: A's field 5 true outfielders for the first time in how many years?

"If [Toronto] could sign Burnett, the deal would get done now," the source said.
Should the Jays get a deal done, Burnett would be reunited with Toronto pitching coach and close friend Brad Arnsberg, who coached the Marlins' pitching staff in 2002-03.
A key to getting a trade done would be Burnett agreeing to a contract extension with the Blue Jays. That may not be as big of a stumbling block as in years past.
Toronto ownership has given general manager J.P. Ricciardi the go-ahead to increase the club's payroll from $50 million US to an average of $80 million over the next two seasons.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, Ricciardi has been in touch with Marlins GM Larry Beinfest and told him to check back with him before dealing Burnett elsewhere.

Friend of BP Bruce Miles has a couple interesting notes in his latest column at the Arlington Daily Herald. He says the Cubs aren't talking with the Angels about Corey Patterson and that the Cubs' interest in the Soriano deal might not be focused on Soriano at all. The Rangers and Mets could get the Cubs involved another way, moving Cliff Floyd to Chicago in return for a couple of their pitching prospects (Sergio Mitre? Todd Wellemeyer?) moving to Texas. My best New York source doesn't like this deal--"It leaves a hole in the outfield for the Mets"--so we'll keep listening.

Sounds like Ramirez / Baez (Mets), Huff / Cameron (Sox), prospectsorama (DRays) is pretty close to a done deal. I personally wouldn't want to give up Shoppach and Sanchez to downgrade at two positions, but I guess you do what you have to do to get out of Ramirez's contract.

The inability of some of the worst teams in baseball to get into a market that favored sellers and and improve their organizations for 2006 in beyond is probably the biggest story other than the lack of moves. The Devil Rays and Chuck LaMar, in particular, should absolutely be ashamed of their performance. Keeping Aubrey Huff and Danys Baez and Julio Lugo does nothing for their outlook in the short or long terms, and they squandered an opportunity. Chuck LaMar will likely say they couldn’t get enough–and as thoroughly as these things get covered, it is impossible to know exactly what names are being discussed in each negotiation–but at some point, you have to get something. Those three players’ entire value to the team was in what they could bring to the 2007-09 editions of the Devil Rays, the ones with B.J. Upton and Delmon Young leading the way. August isn’t going to save them; all three players are positive contributors with reasonable contracts who have virtually no chance to clear waivers. It’s time for the Rays as an organization to acknowledge LaMar’s complete failure at his job over nearly a decade and move in a different direction. The Reds again failed to do anything notable, no surprise for an organization that has had four outfielders for three spots for three years now and has refused to address the problem. They couldn’t clear that logjam, or make minor deals for some of their veteran relievers. The Pirates dealt Lawton, but couldn’t move Jose Mesa or Mark Redman. The Royals didn’t find a taker for Mike Sweeney. Just six real sellers, more than a dozen motivated buyers, and yet LaMar, Dan O’Brien, Dave Littlefield, and Allard Baird combined for one deal in the last seven days before the deadline. The job security of these men, none of whom has assembled a .500 team or made dynamic moves in that direction, is mind-boggling.
