His current rate is about 1 every 4 ABs.

Yeah, it's not like Big Hurt is Rob Deer or Dave Kingman!

It is pretty odd, though.

Wobbly Is ... Tony Womack In 2005:

AVG / OBP / SLG = .243 / .276 / .266

tangent: is it statistically possible for a player's obp to be lower than his batting average? the scoreboard at rogers centre reported such an anomaly a few months ago and we couldn't work out if it was just a weird circumstantial thing or an outright error.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Sacrifices (flies, bunts, etc.) count as hollow plate appearances that don't affect batting average.

So if a guy goes 1-for-3 with a sac fly, the day's BA is .333, but the day's OBP is .250.

danke.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

De nada, chief.

He's been on the DL for a month, but Mike Hampton's April/May line bears mention:

4-1, 59.0 IP, 16 BB, 22 K, 1.07 WHIP, 1.83 ERA, .235 BABIP.

Hope you sold him high, Braves fans.
