SABR member and 19th century baseball historian David Block will be
appearing at the Mid-Manhattan Library NYPL on Thursday, July 7 at 6:30 pm to discuss his book Baseball Before We Knew It: A Search for the Roots of the Game.

He is cited as "debunking the enduring belief that baseball descended from the English game of rounders and revealing a surprising new explanation for the most notorious myth of all--the Abner Doubleday “Cooperstown story." See

On Saturday, July 9th at 6 pm, at Coliseum Bookstore, 2 authors will
appear at Coliseum Bookstore in New York City: David Block (see above) and Eugena Pilek, author of Cooperstown: A Novel. Block will share his research about baseball's beginnings, and novelist Eugena Pilek will talk about a "close-knit community where gossip is sovereign and baseball is the great American religion." See http://www.coliseumbooks.com/events/070905event.htm
for greater detail about each author and book, and directions. Everyone is welcome to join both events, which are free, and to remain for casual discussion afterwards.

7:00PM, Wednesday, July 13
Barnes and Noble
106 Court Street

Brooklyn, NY

Join Steven Goldman, Baseball Prospectus staffer and author of Forging Genius, for an evening of baseball talk.

I just finished "Forging Genius" -- an account of Stengel's baseball life and education through his first Yankee season in '49 -- and it is, as Casey would say, "splendid."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

goldman seems like a really neat dude

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

He says "I'll be signing things, anything in fact. As Casey said, I'll sign anything but veal cutlets. My pen slips on veal cutlets."

Two authors, both female SABRites, will present their books on Saturday, August 13 at 6 pm in New York City's Coliseum Bookstore. Each author has won a Research Presentation Award at SABR
conventions, which is another first for the bookstore.

Jean Hastings Ardell (http://www.jeanardell.com) writes and lectures on women’s contributions to baseball. Her work has appeared in newspapers, magazines, and in anthologies. Breaking into Baseball: Women and the National Pastime reveals just how involved women are, and have always been, in the American game.

Cecilia Tan http://www.ceciliatan.com/ writes fiction,
non-fiction, and produces her own online baseball magazine, Why I Like
Baseball. The 50 Greatest Yankee Games includes the most dramatic moments from the Yankees' first World Series, as well as personal recollections from legendary players. The book features anecdotes, box scores, and vintage photographs.

Coliseum Books is at 11 W 42 St. (btw 5th & 6th Avenues).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

It seems there's been a substitution, with Curt Flood's latest biographer supporting Neyer instead of the Bill James guy...

Alex Belth, former assistant film editor (for Ken Burns, Woody
Allen and the Coen brothers) and current SI.com writer, will explain why he chose Curt Flood as his subject for Stepping Up: The Story of
All-Star Curt Flood and His Fight for Baseball Players' Rights. Flood,
whose "baseball career was cut short by conscience, not injury" (see
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0892553219/002-2047647-0574414?v=glance&n=283155) has been acknowledged as one of baseball's most
underappreciated icons. The readings begin at 6pm, and include a Q&A session.
