the blazing Pirate comet called Zach Duke

Holy moly, when's the last time a guy started a career like this?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6219

After 29 innings, he easily leads all rookie pitchers with a VORP of 14.5 (which trails the leading NL non-pitching froshie -- the long-idle Clint "Deer Meat" Barmes -- by 0.1). Anyone seen any of his games? What's he throw?

I'm just pissed that Rap0sa beat us all to the punch with Duke in the fantasy league.

30 Bangin' Tunes That You've Already Got ... IN A DIFFERENT ORDER! (Barry Brune, Friday, 22 July 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

He throws HOT FIYAH! But not really.

From a 2004 BP article on underrated pitching prospects (joining Jeff Francis, Dan Meyer, Josh Banks, and Clint "What's My Name" GOOCHER):

"The Pirates selected Duke as a prep talent in the 20th round of the 2001 draft. He signed too late to pitch that season, but the following year he made a strong showing in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League. In 2003, he posted a 3.11 ERA and allowed only seven homers in 141.2 innings in the Sally League, but his strikeout rate took a notable dive.

"This season, however, he's assuaged all worries about his ability to dominate hitters. Despite pitching in probably the best hitter's park in the Carolina League, he leads the circuit in ERA and presently ranks third in strikeouts. Duke rarely reaches 90 with his fastball, but it has good movement and has been more than enough to complement one of the best curveballs in the minors. He's making good progress with his change this season, and he's still doing a fine job of keeping the ball on the ground. Duke dropped quite a few organizational jaws with his pre-spring training workouts this season, and he's close to being on the fast track. Don't be surprised if he's in Double-A by mid-July."

Prior to being called up this year (again, according to BP), he had a 2.92 ERA in Indy w/ a 66-23 K/BB ratio.

Yesterday's start was kinda sketchy, though - no runs, but lots of runners. (I know this because *shhh* he's on my fantasy team.) (Oh damn BB outed me.)

I was gonna say, until yesterday he's looked incredible. Lots of walks yesterday, his WHIP jumped up from 0.95 to 1.15.

I thought Ian Snell was supposed to be The Next Big Thing in Terrible TowelVille, but he's been kinda turfing it in the majors so far. Not that early performance is any indication of what'll happen later on, but Da Duke is certainly looking nice & shiny right now. He'll probably cough up 5 ER in 3 IP his next start.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

I think Coors Field finally caught up to Francis, as I saw his ERA was now above 5.00, but for most of the first half his home ERA was better than the road by over a run.

Is Zack Duke this years Noah Lowry? Lowry got off to a nice start last year with the Giants, perhaps not quite as good as Duke. With Duke being a lefty, Lowry came to mind.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Lowry doesn't have nearly the sort of success that Duke's had in the minors (from what I gathered here), and I can't recall Lowry getting much notice @ all as a prospect (though the light shining off of guys like Ainsworth, Foppert, and Williams probably had something to do w/ that). Also, Duke's got 3 years on Lowry.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Lowry had a 4.50 ERA for Fresno when he got called up last year (see last year's Giants thread where I asked "Why has the PCL figured out Lowry while MLB hasn't?").

if perez can get his shit together, this could be the best lefty-lefty combo ever, yes? (i'm probably forgetting something really obvious)

John (jdahlem), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Frank Viola and Sid Fernandez!

three weeks pass...
Mets, looking great for two nights, have been the worst NL team vs rookie pitchers the last 2 seasons I believe; so it'd be doubly sweet if they can sweep the McClendons and survive ZD tonight.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Morbius, stop sipping on G's hatorade.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

i think Our Man Duke is the guy w/ a clue!

John (jdahlem), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

Randolph: "I didn't think he was anything dazzling, nothing exceptional about him. But he just mixes his pitches in real nice and kept us off stride."

That really does look like something some 2nd grader scribbled with puff-paints on his Trapper Keeper.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 9 September 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

What I can't believe is how, of all the things he could have painted, he painted his own name.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

I also find it strange that he has yellow paint all over his jumpsuit, but there's no yellow in the painting... strange shenanigans in the studio
