"By then, there was very little chance of a deal happening for Ramirez, and, fortunately by then, Epstein had repaired much of the damage, with the help of Kevin Millar and David Ortiz. The only way there would be a deal is if Boston could reach its endgame of Mike Cameron, which involved a fourth team, the Reds, and Adam Dunn; in that, Manny would have gone to the Mets; Hanley Ramirez and Mets players would have gone to Tampa Bay; Lastings Milledge and Anibel Sanchez would have gone to Cincinnati; and Boston would have received Cameron, Dunn, Aubrey Huff and Trever Miller. Tampa Bay had killed it by Saturday morning by reminding people why they are the worst franchise in modern baseball history and upping requests, and Reds GM Dan O'Brien had serious restraints because of the impending ownership change; he could not even respond to Yankee inquiries about and Junior Griffey."

WHY O WHY

and speaking of great columns, paul daugherty is probably my favorite around these days. he has been amazing on the ugliness that is the reds. check this: http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050704/COL03/507040352/1007/col03

a quote:

"In the spirit of promotion and the current emphasis on fundamentals, the club hereby announces Little Things Night. Every player who survives the game without making an error, getting picked off, throwing to the wrong base or taking a third strike with runners in scoring position gets an official Cincinnati Reds beanie, complete with propeller.

The Reds had 14,000 walk-ups the last two games of the series. That means they've become more a diversion than a passion. "It's a nice night, let's go to the Reds game" is on the same page with "It's raining, let's go bowling." Which is great for the Reds as long as it doesn't rain. Maybe when it rains, they could pass out Dick Weber bobbleheads.

They're into the try-hard portion of the schedule. This means it's time to blow Taps and pump up the footballs. Friday's gallant 10-7 heartbreaker to the mighty Astros brought the kiss-of-death "We Didn't Quit" speech from interim manager Jerry Narron. Let's hear it for the Reds, who try hard. Great job, kids. The juice boxes are in the cooler. Roger will be handing them out. Take just one, or Roger will break you."

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 4 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

that was great. how do you dig this shit up? i'd like to read more baseball writing but most of it pisses me off & i don't know where to look for the good stuff.

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 4 August 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

for yw, i started trawling the newspapers in every baseball market to read their local baseball writer. i have to say that daugherty is the only good one i came across. here's the daugherty archive (which is linked on yw): http://www.enquirer.com/columns/daugherty/

i started trawling the newspapers in every baseball market to read their local baseball writer.

Don't bother with Richard Justice at the Houston Chronicle. Midway through last year he was calling for the Astros to pack it in and trade Jeff Kent for some prospects. Then, for the first two months of this season, he kept berating the Astros for not re-signing Jeff Kent.

Tom Boswell, WaPo:
twenty years leading up to this year: "Selig/Angelos suck, DC deserves baseball!"
April-June 2005: "Oh those spunky Nats, how long can it last?"
July-present: "Poor spunky Nats are struggling, but it's better than no baseball!"

Michael Wilbon, WaPo:
"Michael Jordan gives me $5 every time I mention him in a column!"

In honor of Gammons, I'd like to re-point out this great parody/homage to his Peterness:

It may seem gauche to say this now, but Gammons had an in-game dugout report about Manny about two weeks ago, saying he was much more comfortable this year in Boston and had turned into a great guy in the clubhouse and great teammate. To which Jon Miller sensibly replied, "but there was never any question about him as a teammate, or how he carried himself in the clubhouse, was there?" I guess it's still taboo to mention Manny's wife, but c'mon - don't retroactively make stuff up about Manny being some sullen Bobby Bonilla type. I like Gammons, but trade dirt always seemed like his strong suit to me, at least these days; putting him on sideline duty for personality factoids and injury updates seems kind of beneath him. Maybe he just likes being down on the field and I can't say I blame him.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 30 June 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I would love to know if that was his idea this year or the network's.

I will commence to drop a knowledge bomb. (Rock Hardy), Friday, 30 June 2006 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

WTF??!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 3 July 2006 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

The thing about Gammons' trade dirt is that he always seems to give equal credence to every trade rumor, no matter how preposterous. I'm never sure if teams are actively feeding him misinformation or if his level of access is really that great, but his after-the-fact dissections of the big blockbusters are always worthwhile reads.

Is there another national baseball writer who's so blatant about his favoritism, though?

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

it does seem that way. but before last year's ALDS he did pick the White over the Red, so I give him credit for that.

one month passes...
"It's great to see baseball again. And what better place."

back on ESPN Wednesday.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

His article today was nice, if effusive in its praise of everyone in the universe.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

Today's my first chance to see him since he came back. I can hear a little slurring in his speech, but he looks and sounds really good.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

yeah. i got a little choked up when i saw him on sunday, i'll admit it.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

sixteen years pass...

Will read that for sure. Always liked him in Sports Illustrated, read and remember enjoying Beyond the Sixth Game. I don't know if he's considered old-school and out of step, like Costas.
